Chapter 529 The Shadow Behind
The gun pointed through the hospital room's glass window, aiming at Deacon lying on the hospital bed. With a pull of the trigger, Deacon would be shot in the head and killed.
The police officer guarding Deacon was dozing off in his chair, unaware of anything unusual.
Until...
The bullet pierced through the glass with a bang, shattering the entire pane and hitting the wall.
The police officer jolted awake, and even the Deacon on the hospital bed immediately opened his eyes, looked out the window, and knew instantly what was happening. It was the people from Moonlight Gate coming to silence him.
The police officer quickly checked the opposite building, opened the door, and said to his colleague, "Quick, the rooftop of the opposite building!"
The police heard a commotion in the hospital room outside.
Several police officers immediately moved Deacon, and Landon received news of the incident before even leaving the hospital. Soon, all the police officers headed toward the opposite building, swiftly surrounding the entire structure.
Sirens blared through the entire street, causing panic among the people.
Tate, on the rooftop, calmly collected her weapons, then used a grappling hook to descend toward the ground. She had made a mistake, alerting the police. Everything was going according to Tate's plan. She hadn't expected to survive tonight, or else she wouldn't have given all the medicine to Anthony.
Just after Deacon was moved to the adjacent ward, the police officer responsible for guarding him had just relaxed, making a call to report the situation to his superior, when he heard a gunshot behind him. Deacon's blood stained the entire hospital bed, splattering the wall as a whole.
Deacon had been shot in the head, leaving the police officers pale. Looking out the window, they didn't spot the perpetrator this time.
The superior on the phone heard the sound and asked, "What's going on?"
"Deacon is dead, silenced." the police officer almost cried. Deacon had died right in front of him, and he was sure he couldn't evade responsibility.
Just as Tate descended from the rooftop, with police cars in the alley on both sides, she walked toward the police outside the alley with a sniper rifle on her back, clearly walking into a trap.
As she was about to leave the alley, a dark figure descended from the sky, calling out, "Tate."
The familiar voice left Tate stunned. She hadn't heard that voice in ten years.
Tate looked up to see a woman wearing a mask, fully disguised, descending from the sky. She recognized the logo on the person's body. It was someone from Moonlight Gate.
"Aria Hall?" Tate couldn't believe it. It was a voice that, despite the passage of a decade, Tate recognized instantly—a voice that echoed from a past Tate had thought buried.
The woman removed her mask, revealing a delicate face. It was Aria, who had died on her first mission at the age of fifteen.
Tate was bewildered. "What's going on? Aria, you're alive? Didn't you die back then?" She had seen Aria die right in front of her.
"Leave this place now." Aria put her mask back on, saying no more.
Half an hour later, on the outskirts of the highway, Tate coldly said, "Stop the car."
Aria stopped the car, and Tate got out. Aria followed, calling out, "Tate."
Tate walked a few meters away in anger, then stopped, coldly questioning, "You're not dead. Why did you hide it from me? Was it the master who told you to do so? Then why are you appearing now?"
Tate couldn't accept it. She had always been haunted by Aria's death, only to find out now that Aria had never died.
Aria completely removed her disguise, revealing short, deep purple hair, purple lips, and exaggerated makeup. She exuded a colder aura than Tate, her presence tinged with a palpable lethality.
"What were you planning to do just now? Turn yourself into the police?" Aria stared at Tate. "I won't let you do that."
"I'm asking you now. Why did you hide it from me? We were best friends. Why didn't you tell me you were still alive?" Tate suddenly realized. "All this time, you've been the shadow behind me, completing those unfinished tasks for me?"
Aria admitted openly, "Yes. When we were fifteen, it was our first mission. According to the rules, only one of us could survive. Whoever completed the mission would live. That was our final test, but the master changed his mind at the last moment, leaving both of us. You were in the spotlight, and I became your shadow. For the past ten years, I've always been by your side."
"Was it you who did the thing to Finnegan?" Tate was very angry. "Are you willing to be the master's executioner?"
"It was me," Aria said calmly. "We are the master's blades. We can only do what he wants us to do. Tate, I want you to live. Every task of yours must be completed smoothly. I will help you with the things you don't want to do."
