Chapter 683 Farewell
Getting called "grandpa" by his own daughter hit Finnegan like a ton of bricks.
Warmie didn't fuss; she just let Finnegan hold her. That hug felt so familiar and comforting.
Warmie, being the sweet kid she was, reached out her tiny hand to wipe Finnegan's tears, making him feel even worse.
Lynn sniffled and said, "Warmie, this is Daddy, not Grandpa. His hair's white because of the snow."
Warmie was too young to get why his hair was white, so Lynn had to explain it like that.
"Daddy?"Warmie looked at Finnegan with curious, innocent eyes, her voice soft. "Are you Daddy?"
Finnegan nodded, trying to hold back his tears. "Yeah, I'm Daddy."
Warmie, puzzled and naive, asked, "Daddy, why don't you come home?"
Her voice was so sweet, it tugged at his heartstrings.
Finnegan couldn't answer.
Why didn't he come home?
Why did he leave Warmie?
Why did he come to this monastery?
He had no answers.
Warmie was everything to him and Ophelia. When something happened to Ophelia, he left Warmie too.
Warmie's question made Finnegan realize how wrong and cruel he'd been.
"I'm sorry, Warmie. Daddy's so sorry," Finnegan cried, holding her tight.
Lynn turned away, silently wiping her eyes.
After a while, Finnegan finally calmed down. It was cold outside, so he let Lynn take Warmie inside.
Inside, it was warm, and Warmie was hungry again. Lynn asked the nanny to prepare some formula. Warmie sat on the couch, holding the bottle and drinking milk obediently.
Such a well-behaved and adorable Warmie could melt anyone's heart.
Finnegan looked at her, his heart softening.
Seeing this, Lynn seized the moment and said, "Warmie misses you, so I brought her to find you. Look how cute she is, like a little doll. Ophelia gave you such an adorable daughter. What are you regretting? If you don't take care of Warmie, how sad would Ophelia be? She risked her life to give birth to her."
Finnegan knew how hard it was for Ophelia during her pregnancy.
He gazed at Warmie without speaking, his eyes full of love. Warmie was his reason for living; otherwise, he would've followed Ophelia.
Lynn stopped there, letting Finnegan think about Ophelia's hardships and Warmie's plight.
After finishing her milk, Warmie put down the bottle and climbed into Finnegan's arms, ready to sleep.
Eating and then immediately sleeping, that was Warmie's endearing and adorable side.
Finnegan was a bit stunned; Warmie had never been like this before.
Looking at her, who fell asleep as soon as she got into his arms, Finnegan's lips curved into a slight smile, his eyes full of affection.
Lynn said, "Warmie is really exhausted. She didn't sleep at all on the way here. When I told her we were going to find Daddy, she was so happy and kept asking me where Daddy was."
Finnegan held Warmie as she slept in his arms. It had been a long time since he had held her.
When he left home, Warmie couldn't even walk. Now she could run and speak clearly.
Finnegan said, "If Ophelia could see this, she would be so happy. Warmie is growing up little by little, looking more and more like Ophelia."
"Yeah, she's practically a mini Ophelia," Lynn said. "Wilder visits her a lot. He even set up a grave for Ophelia and hasn't gone back to Country F. He's staying at the Parks family estate. Everyone's dealing with Ophelia's loss in their own way, but isn't this kind of like punishing themselves?"
Finnegan got what Lynn meant and said, "For the past six months, I've been thinking, if I had asked Ophelia and Warmie to stay when they left the estate, would things have been different? If I hadn't been so arrogant and confident that I could catch Lloyd, would our wedding have happened? I owe her a wedding, and now there's no chance to make it up."
"She married you and felt your love. That must have meant the world to her," Lynn said, trying to comfort him. "Maybe Ophelia's out there somewhere, maybe she's not really gone. If you give up now, who will look for her? Remember, everyone thought Wilder was dead too, but he and Dovie were apart for over twenty years and never saw each other again before he passed."
