Chapter 76 Going Home with Him

A ripple of shock went through Ophelia. What was Finnegan doing here, especially this late?

He stood calmly by his car door, dressed in a dark brown coat and wrapped in a scarf, casually smoking and seemingly waiting for someone. In the bustling city, an encounter between two people was far from guaranteed. He belonged to the pinnacle of society's pyramid, while Ophelia was just a small, ordinary reflection of this vibrant metropolis.

Taking a deep breath, Ophelia convinced herself he wasn't here for her. She started descending the steps, pretending not to notice Finnegan, and walked towards the subway station to her right.

Suddenly, a resonant voice halted her. "Ophelia, stop right there."

His voice carried a blend of annoyance and command. The woman had seen him and yet she feigned ignorance.

Ophelia froze, not daring to turn back, half-believing she was hallucinating. 'Why did he call out to me? Is he here for me?' she thought.

His footsteps approached, and Ophelia abruptly turned to find herself nearly colliding with Finnegan. She was caught in the depth of his eyes, the turmoil within growing wild.

He looked at her intently. "Are you avoiding me? Are you that afraid of me?"

Ophelia was utterly bewildered. It felt like a dream, yet there stood Finnegan, real as ever, right before her eyes.

"Cat got your tongue?" Finnegan's tone implied that Ophelia had him at a loss. "Quite the spirit, walking out like that. Your resignation hasn't been approved yet. Under your existing employment contract with Abbott's Corporation, joining Parks Corporation is a breach of contract, Ophelia. You know the consequences. I don't need to remind you."

It was the first time Finnegan had given Ophelia such an earful.

Before coming to see her, he had intended to speak calmly, but the way she avoided him, like a mouse scurrying from a cat, ignited a nameless anger within him.

Ophelia steadied herself, saying, "Mr. Abbott, it's been months. If you wanted to sue me, you would have done it by now. Someone as insignificant as me isn't worth your attention. I was disrespectful to you before, and my tone was out of line. I apologize..."

Finnegan cut her off with a cold edge to his voice, "What makes you think you aren't worth my attention?"

"Excuse me?" Ophelia was confused.

"Get in the car." Finnegan grabbed her hand, pulling her toward his vehicle.

In the chilly winter night, his hand was surprisingly warm. Feeling the heat in her palm, Ophelia's heartbeat quickened, her cheeks flushing with a growing warmth.

Ophelia, as if by some otherworldly force, got into the car. It wasn't until Finnegan started the engine that she came to her senses and asked, "Mr. Abbott, where are we going?"

"Your place." Finnegan was serious, and the car was indeed headed toward Ophelia's apartment.

Recognizing the route was correct, Ophelia was stunned. "Mr. Abbott, how do you know where I live?"

Finnegan said expressionlessly, "If I want to know something, I can find out."

Over the past few months, Finnegan thought Ophelia's departure would fade from his memory, but the desire to possess her remained as intense as ever.

He didn't hold back anymore, coming to find her that night.

Even he was shocked by his own impulsive actions.

Soon, the car arrived at the apartment complex where Ophelia rented a place. He got out and started walking toward the building on his own.

Realizing something was amiss, Ophelia hurried to catch up. "Mr. Abbott, you haven't been secretly investigating me, have you?"

'Why would he investigate me? Why does he care where I live?' Ophelia thought to herself.

Finnegan remained silent, walking forward with a purpose until he entered an apartment building. His familiarity with the place unnerved Ophelia a little.

He knew her inside out, aware of her residence as if he lived there himself. The thought that he might have dishonorable intentions towards her was truly frightening.

Standing at the door of Ophelia's rental, Finnegan gestured with his eyes. "Open the door."

Ophelia was silent.

"Mr. Abbott, this is my house. You know so much about it - don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

Ophelia hesitated to let Finnegan in. She wasn't a naive child. It was late at night, and bringing a man back to her place, a bachelor no less - his intentions couldn't be more obvious, could they?
