Chapter 64 He Went to See Her Himself
Magnus was concerned about Ophelia being alone. A miscarriage was no small matter.
'Moreover, an unexpected one at that—Ophelia must be devastated.' Magnus thought. That's why he asked Seraphina to keep her company, to offer some comfort.
At Orchid Garden, Seraphina couldn't hide her glee upon reading the message. She almost jumped with joy.
With Ophelia's miscarriage, nothing stood in her way anymore.
Ophelia: [I'll head over now.]
After sending the message, she could hardly wait to leave. Finnegan was home today, nursing a hangover. He felt awful, plagued by a severe, throbbing headache.
Finnegan stood before the floor-to-ceiling window on the third floor, watching as Seraphina left her house.
He had looked into Seraphina's recent associations and expenditures. She had become chummy with her neighbors and often indulged in luxury shopping sprees. Her spending escalated from the tens of thousands to the millions.
She had also been splurging on beauty treatments and mingling with the elite at upscale clubs, refining her image.
Finnegan had initially thought Seraphina was down-to-earth, but her recent activities had completely changed his perception of her.
"Finnegan, Finnegan!" Caspian's voice drifted in from outside before he appeared at the door.
"Finnegan, I have some good news." Caspian declared, pushing the door open. "I ran into Miss Sinclair last night. She's all bark and no bite and claimed to be nothing more than your subordinate. I told her you were drowning your sorrows, so she showed up at the Star Moon Club looking for you. If your lady at the Orchid Garden hadn't beaten her to it, we could have figured out Miss Sinclair's true feelings."
At this, Finnegan's brow furrowed. "Are you saying Ophelia was at the Star Moon Club last night too?"
"Yeah, I called her," Caspian boasted, proudly. "Without me, you two would've been history. You don’t have to thank me. Just make me your best man when the time comes. Oh, and there's more good news. Want to hear it?"
Finnegan, short on patience, snapped, "Out with it."
"I accompanied Miss Sinclair to the hospital last night..." Caspian teased, deliberately pausing for effect.
Finnegan shot Caspian a piercing look that clearly meant, "Finish your sentence or else."
Grinning, Caspian continued, "Miss Sinclair isn't pregnant. It was all a big misunderstanding – they got the test results wrong."
Finnegan's eyes narrowed astutely, "A misunderstanding?"
"Yeah, they it all wrong—turned out to be her time of the month. She thought she was having a miscarriage and went pale as a ghost," Caspian rattled on with a hint of exaggeration. "The poor thing, she was in so much pain, it looked like a stiff breeze could knock her over. Lucky for her, I was there. Who knows what would've happened otherwise?"
Finnegan's gaze turned steely. "What does this have to do with me?"
"Drop the tough guy act, Finnegan," Caspian cajoled. "It's sad, really, Miss Sinclair's never had a boyfriend. She’s always flying solo."
"Caspian, do you have a brain in that head of yours? She wouldn’t be worried about a pregnancy if she had never been with anyone. Even if it was a mix-up, there's got to be a grain of truth for such a mess to unfold." Finnegan's voice was icy. "Not a single word that woman says is the truth. Do you really believe everything she tells you?"
"Right, no guy, no baby. So, did Miss Sinclair get dumped after being played by some jerk?" Caspian mused. "Maybe it was a one-night stand, and the guy skipped out on any responsibility. No wonder when I asked her about the man, she clammed up—she must be hiding something."
Finnegan gave him a sharp look. "Has she got you under her spell to make you stand up for her like this?"
Finnegan had seen his fair share of women come and go, but Caspian only ever spoke up for Ophelia.
Caspian chuckled, "Come on, Finnegan. If Miss Sinclair's casting any spells, they’re meant for you, not me. By the way, did you really fire her?"
Finnegan's face betrayed no expression as he corrected him. "She packed her bags and left on her own."
Caspian murmured, "Same difference. You drove her away."
Finnegan rubbed his temples. "If you can't talk sense, get out."
"Look at you, Finnegan, all worked up again," Caspian remarked. "I'm washing my hands of this."
A frosty look from Finnegan was all it took.
Caspian knew to take the hint, but he nonchalantly dropped a final piece of information. "Ms. Sinclair's place is at Orchid Bay Community, building three, apartment 1512."
With that, he left.
Prior to this, Finnegan only knew the general whereabouts of Ophelia's neighborhood, not the specific building or apartment.
