Chapter 62 A Serious Misunderstanding

Blood stained Ophelia's pants, and the car seat she sat on also bore traces of her condition.

On the way to the hospital, Ophelia was overwhelmed with fear. Preoccupied with concerns for her baby, she no longer gave any thought to the issues involving Seraphina and Finnegan.

Upon reaching the hospital, Caspian offered gallantly, "Miss Sinclair, should I carry you inside?"

"That won’t be necessary," Ophelia insisted, feeling it inappropriate for him to do so. Despite the pain, she was still able to walk.

Stepping out of the car, Ophelia felt another warm gush, reminiscent of a heavy period. Moving seemed to only make the bleeding worse.

"I'll go get you admitted," said Caspian, leading the way to the on-duty OB/GYN. "Doctor, please, look at my friend. She's pregnant and bleeding."

The doctor glanced at Ophelia's pants, noting the significant amount of blood. "Quick, lie down inside, and we'll take a look at what's happening."

Lying on the hospital bed, Ophelia felt a touch of embarrassment for the fuss Caspian was making on her behalf. Once settled, she felt more comfortable and the bleeding seemed to stop.

While waiting for the results, Caspian asked, "Miss Sinclair, considering your condition, shouldn't you call the father?"

Ophelia's thoughts went to Finnegan, who was possibly with Seraphina at Orchid Garden, maybe even in bed by now. Why would she call him?

Seeing her silence, Caspian speculated, "Miss Sinclair, did that jerk really fool you? I just told Finnegan that you must've been taken for a ride by some loser who won't take responsibility. Was that what happened? "

"Caspian, I..." Ophelia's words were cut short as the doctor walked in with a clipboard in hand.

"Ophelia Sinclair? Are you Ophelia?"

"Yes, that's me." Ophelia mustered the strength to sit up, concern etched on her face. "Doctor, what's going on? Why am I bleeding? Is my baby okay?"

Ophelia had been worrying herself sick only to hear the doctor say, "You're not pregnant. It's just your period. Go home, stay warm, and get plenty of rest."

Ophelia's mind reeled. She wasn’t pregnant?

Caspian exchanged a puzzled look with her.

"Doctor, there must be some mistake,” Ophelia protested. “At my last check-up, I was told I was pregnant. How could I not be pregnant now?"

"The results are clear," the doctor insisted. "Is it possible you were mistaken before? When was your last menstrual cycle?"

"I'm over two weeks late. I've always been regular, like clockwork," Ophelia was still in disbelief. "Can we do another test?"

"There's no need for another test. The results are definitive. You're not pregnant," the doctor assured her. "Are you that eager to have a child? You're both young. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to conceive. Young people need rest and consistent schedules. Irregular sleep can disrupt your cycle."

The doctor assumed Ophelia and Caspian were a couple.

Ophelia, head bowed, stared at her belly. She’d thought she was carrying Finnegan's child, but it was all just a big misunderstanding. She recalled the medical examination she had been in, and the other woman who had been there as well. Perhaps that's where the error had occurred.

Ophelia was torn between relief and sorrow.

Without a child, there would be no tie to Finnegan, who was with Seraphina. That should make things easier, shouldn't it?

She sat numbly on the hospital bed, and as soon as the doctor left, tears began to spill down her cheeks uncontrollably.

Ophelia's silent weeping startled Caspian. "Miss Sinclair, what's wrong? Look, the doctor said there was a mix-up, and you're not pregnant. You didn’t have a miscarriage. Isn’t that good news?"

Yes, it was supposed to be good news.

It was just her period, not a miscarriage.

However, in Ophelia's heart, it didn't feel any less significant. She had truly believed she was pregnant and had made so many plans for the future.

Curled up, with her head buried in her knees, Ophelia hugged her legs and didn't make a sound as she maintained this fetal position.

She felt crushed, as if her heart had been mercilessly stomped on for the past hour.

First learning that Seraphina was Finnegan's girlfriend, and now discovering that the miscarriage scare was a false alarm—was her life nothing but a walking punchline?
