Chapter 318 Did Betty Plot Against Richard Years Ago
Betty stood in shock, her hands numb.
'Is Aurora out of her mind? Is she here to seek death?' Betty thought.
Fortunately, Richard's rental was on the second floor, so jumping down wouldn't kill her, but she looked serious.
At the moment Aurora was taken away in an ambulance, Betty seemed to understand.
She was ruthless, jumping from the second floor in front of Richard. Regardless of whether she lived or died, Richard would feel guilty.
If she became disabled, Richard would have to take care of her forever.
If she got injured, Richard would have to go to the hospital to take care of her.
"Go home and wait for me." Seeing Betty standing stiff in place, Richard thought she was scared and walked over to speak softly, "I'll go to the hospital with you."
Betty's eyes reddened, subconsciously reaching out to grab Richard's clothes.
She didn't want Richard to go but then felt it was selfish not to let him go.
She couldn't always be noble, using her status and social position to suppress Richard.
She wanted to be equal with Richard. "Go ahead, come back soon."
Richard looked at Betty with burning eyes, turned around, and hugged her. "Don't think too much. If you're scared here alone, I'll have Jasmine come over to keep you company."
Betty remained silent.
"Wait for me to come back."
Betty nodded.
In the ambulance.
Aurora reached out to Richard with blood on her hands, and her phone slipped from her hand.
Richard instinctively grabbed the phone from Aurora's hand, and the interface showed a recorded conversation.
As his finger touched the screen, the recording played.
In the recording, Aurora was talking to Betty at home.
Aurora said that someone gave her money five years ago, forcing her to leave Silverlight City.
And that person was Betty.
Richard's hand holding the phone tightened. He gritted his teeth and rubbed his forehead.
"Richard." Before Aurora was taken into the emergency room, she weakly called out Richard's name.
"Don't abandon me."
Richard stood outside, silent for a long time.
"Madison?" At the smoking area, Richard called his former team leader. "I'm working as a bodyguard at tthe Ryan family. How did you find me for this job?"
On the phone, Madison paused. "The job you currently undertake?"
"Yes."
"The people from the Ryan family have been looking for you many times. You've always refused. Recently, when you were short of money, I inquired again. They still needed a bodyguard. The pay is great, and the referral fee is high, so I told you." Madison spoke again, "What's wrong? Is there any problem with the Ryan family?"
"Not really." Richard raised his hand to his forehead and took a deep breath. "When did Ryan's family start looking for me through you? Do you remember?"
Richard's voice was hoarse.
Madison fell silent for a long time. "It seems like it was after you were seriously injured and returned to the country, retired to recover from your injuries for a year. Not long after that, they asked me. I remember at that time, your sister had just given birth; you had to take care of the child, so you refused."
Richard rubbed his forehead. "I see."
After hanging up, Richard leaned against the wall and closed his eyes wearily.
If what Aurora said was true, what was Betty hiding from him? And when did she start targeting him?
Did he know Betty before?
Why did he have no recollection at all?
"Are you the patient's family member? The patient suffered a concussion, a radius fracture, a comminuted metacarpal fracture, and three tibia fractures. She needed to be hospitalized for a while."
Richard came to his senses, nodded, signed the form, and went to pay.
When he returned, Aurora was already awake.
She lay on the hospital bed, her arms and legs already in casts, looking at Richard with swollen eyes.
Richard placed the documents and everything on the bedside table and spoke softly, "Call your parents and have them come take care of you."
Aurora's voice choked. "They abandon me, Richard. You are my only one."
"Aurora, I have a girlfriend now." Richard turned the ring on his hand. “I'll find a caregiver for you. Rest well."
Richard wanted to go back and ask Betty if she was playing him.
But if Betty weren't serious, why would she get married to him?
"Richard." Aurora choked up. "Five years ago, I left you because I was forced. Someone threatened me."
Richard looked at Aurora, his voice hoarse. "100,000 dollars?"
Aurora's eyes reddened. "Richard, my dad was sick. If Ihad no money,he would die."
Richard remained silent.
That year, he knew Aurora's father was sick and needed a lot of money for treatment.
To raise money for Aurora's father's treatment, he worked tirelessly on the construction site, even falling from a scaffold and injuring his leg. He also worked as a nightclub bouncer at night for a month, several times collapsing in the alley due to exhaustion.
He even thought about going to underground fights.
In one of those fights, he almost lost his life because he hadn't rested well.
Later, the boss said a kind-hearted wealthy man saved him, took him to the hospital, and even gave him money to recover, advising him to quit that line of work.
He didn't want to take the money, but when he returned it, the boss said he didn't know who the benefactor was.
Hobbling with that money, he went to find Aurora, wanting her to use it in an emergency, but instead of help, he was met with slander and insults from Aurora's parents, along with the news of Aurora going abroad to study.
"Big bosses like Betty, they have no heart. In the world of the wealthy, people like us can't barge in. You have no idea how important it is to be well-matched." Aurora choked, crying and questioning Richard. "Do you really not love me anymore?"
"Yes," Richard spoke in a low voice.
"Richard, I don't believe it." Aurora shook her head. She couldn't believe Richard didn't love her anymore.
Back then, Richard loved her to the core. They had been together for so many years, so how could he forget it in such a short time?
"Richard, I'll die without you, but she'll still be the Ryan family's big boss without you. Please, I beg you." Aurora choked, looking at Richard.
"Have a good rest." After saying this, Richard left the ward.
"Don't stimulate the patient for now. She has a strong tendency toward depression. I see multiple scars on her wrists, although not deep, they indicate a tendency for self-harm. She also has old wounds on her body, marks left by long-term violence, likely caused by domestic abuse." the doctor instructed.
Outside the ward, William briefed Richard.
"I'll find a caregiver for her, and after she's discharged, I'll have her see a psychologist." Richard didn't look good.
"You and Betty..." William fell silent for a moment, then spoke again, “Betty wasn't the type to play around. After her ex-husband died, she didn't have any men around her. She's serious about you."
Richard remained silent, then spoke after a moment, "Has something happened to her in the past?"
"If you want to be with her, treat her well. The marriage wasn't her choice, and she suffered a lot there. Betty is a very strong-willed person, but I know she carries a lot in her heart. If you truly care for her, she will eventually open up to you and tell you everything."
