Chapter 89 Justin and Ethan Looked Too Alike
"Mr. Patrick, you should keep your thoughts to yourself." Ethan showed no intention of letting go.
Everyone was using each other, so who cared about being noble?
Henry furrowed his brow. He was about to say something when the police entered the ward. "Mr. Henry, please cooperate with our investigation into the assault by Daniel."
Henry glanced at Ethan, his face darkening.
Was Ethan even scheming against him?
"Mr. Patrick, this is a serious matter. Jasmine will definitely not drop this case, considering the grievance she has suffered. Please be honest about it, Mr. Patrick." Ethan spoke lightly.
Henry took a deep breath.
Ethan was indeed something.
Daniel belonged to the Douglas family; he was Ethan's brother. If Ethan reported Daniel to the police himself and testified, things would get worse for him. Howard would surely be angry with Ethan.
But if it was Henry who testified and exposed Daniel's crime, the nature of the matter would be different.
Moreover, if he shielded Daniel, Jasmine would surely be even more disappointed in him.
Ethan had hit two birds with one stone. A truly brilliant strategy.
"Justin, stay here with Mom. I'll come back later." Henry ruffled Justin's head and squatted in front of him. "Call me if you need anything, okay?"
With red eyes, Justin nodded and glanced cautiously at Ethan.
He wanted Ethan to be his dad, but Mom told him Henry was his dad.
Feeling somewhat dejected, Justin lowered his head and fell silent.
Henry asked Ben to stay and look after Justin, then left with the police.
Ethan realized Henry's intentions.
He intentionally made it clear that Justin was his. No matter what Ethan did, it wouldn't change the fact that he was Justin's dad.
The bond between Jasmine and Henry through Justin was unbreakable.
"Is Justin going to school tomorrow?" Ethan asked in a low voice.
Justin cautiously approached Ethan, his soft little hand grabbing onto his clothes tightly.
Richard and Liam were outside the ward, leaving only Ethan, Justin, and Jasmine inside.
"Are you still comfortable at school?" Ethan spoke again, reaching out to Justin.
Justin, feeling wronged, burst into tears, burying his face in Ethan's embrace without making a sound.
Ethan took a deep breath and rubbed Justin's head gently.
"I don't want to go to school..." Justin said in a muffled voice.
He liked being held by Ethan; it made him feel safe.
"Why?" Ethan didn't realize his own voice could sound so gentle.
"Because I got into a fight, and they said bad things about Mom." Justin stood there looking pitiful, his appearance too heart-wrenching for words.
Liam came in, intending to say something, but seeing Justin standing pitifully in front of Ethan, he was momentarily shocked.
This was too much...
Justin's current expression was too much like Ethan's.
"But you can't skip school because of that. You're about to enter elementary school and early education is important." Ethan spoke with an educational tone, yet he was still unusually gentle.
Justin wiped away his tears and spoke softly. "I'm sorry..."
He couldn't call him dad anymore, but he really wanted to. "I got into a fight, and the school doesn't want me anymore."
Ethan furrowed his brow, glanced at Liam, and said, "Go handle it."
Liam quickly closed the ward door and went to make a phone call.
"Will Mom be okay?" Justin asked softly, afraid of waking Mom.
"She will be." Ethan nodded.
"Uncle... thank you." This time Justin didn't call him dad.
But Ethan felt somewhat disappointed.
"Study hard, and thank me when you grow up." Ethan set a goal for Justin.
Justin's eyes lit up, and he nodded vigorously.
"Mr. Douglas, the school said Justin hit Miss Douglas's son, Casey, but, I heard that Erin Ryan has already approached the school. They are taking it very seriously and said they will personally pick up Justin for school early tomorrow morning," Liam said, looking shocked at Ethan.
"What's the relationship between Jasmine and Erin?"
"Erin is quite notorious in the circle. Three years ago, she married a wealthy businessman in Europe. He passed away after a few years, and she, a woman, took his multi-billion-dollar estate back to her country. She's definitely a tough character."
At the door, Richard also paused. "Erin? She's my boss. I work as her bodyguard."
Liam's mouth dropped open in shock. "You work as Erin's bodyguard? You're quite brave."
It was rumored that Erin's deceased husband was involved with the underworld in Europe. Erin took the inheritance back to her country, and naturally, her late husband's family wanted it back. Working as Erin's bodyguard was truly a risky venture.
Richard didn't say anything more. After all, it was his boss's private matter, and he didn't want to pry.
But Erin... she actually helped him.
"Is Lisa causing you trouble?" Ethan asked Richard
Richard nodded. "Yes, no kindergarten in the area is willing to accept Justin now, so I had to ask the boss."
Ethan furrowed his brow.
Why didn't Jasmine call him?
Was she afraid of troubling him?
Ethan glanced back at Jasmine. He didn't know how to make her completely let down her guard.
"Take Justin back; he should go to sleep. Tomorrow morning, I'll have Liam take him to school," Ethan said, ruffling Justin's hair.
Justin turned to look at his mom and obediently nodded.
If it were someone else asking him to go back, he definitely wouldn't listen, but when Ethan spoke, he did.
Richard was also somewhat surprised. Justin was obedient, but he was also stubborn. If Jasmine was hurt, he definitely wouldn't want to leave, but he surprisingly agreed so obediently when Ethan spoke.
"I'm here. Your mom will be fine," Ethan reassured once again.
Justin looked up at Ethan, opened his mouth, but still didn't call him dad.
He then turned and ran to Richard's side.
"I'm here; you can rest assured. My family's people might come looking for trouble with Jasmine. For now, you should lay low and not get involved," Ethan kindly reminded Richard.
"Mr. Douglas, how can my sister, and myself, repay you?" Richard wasn't one to owe favors, and he didn't want Jasmine to owe Ethan too much.
"I won't help you for no reason, but I won't do anything underhanded either," Ethan reassured Richard.
Richard took a deep breath, picked up Justin, and left.
Ethan was not like Daniel.
At the very least, he wouldn't force Jasmine to do something she didn't want to do.
As for anything else, as Jasmine would put it, it was just mutual exploitation.
...
Early the next morning, Jasmine slowly opened her eyes.
She looked at the IV bag above her head, feeling somewhat bewildered.
"Awake?"
On the sofa, Ethan propped up his head, furrowing his brow as he spoke.
Jasmine nervously looked at Ethan. Had he really stayed here all night? "Mr... Mr. Douglas."
"Shh!" Ethan made a hushing motion. "Daniel has been taken in for questioning by the police. The Douglas family's people will be here soon. No matter what they say, you must not speak."
Ethan was there to protect Jasmine.
Jasmine tightly clasped her hands; she was still afraid.
Now that Daniel was in police custody, how could the Douglas family easily forgive her?
"Don't be afraid, I'm here." Ethan stood by her bedside, reassuring Jasmine.
Jasmine's eyes welled up with tears, but she nodded.
But how long could Ethan protect her?
