Chapter 977 Selene's Good Luck

Vincent had been spending a few days at home with Selene, living a quasi-retired life. With nothing pressing to do and concerns about Lily seeking revenge against Selene, he found himself playing the role of protector.

Surprisingly, he discovered that stepping back from the hustle wasn't so bad after all. Vincent, a man in his prime years, was actually contemplating retirement. The thought was almost laughable—he had no children yet. Who would inherit his fortune, his shares, his empire?

Vincent could hardly believe it himself. After fighting so aggressively for so long, here he was in the prime of his life, lounging in the yard and dreaming of retirement. He must be losing his mind. If Ethan ever found out, he'd laugh himself silly.

"Vincent! Give me a hand with these!" Selene called, hauling a massive load of vegetables from the neighbor's house.

Vincent took a deep breath. He needed to find a tactful way to tell Selene he really couldn't stomach any more vegetables.

Yet watching her skillfully helping the neighbors with farm work stirred something in him. This girl must have endured quite a bit of hardship growing up. Few young women these days knew how to work the land like she did.

He rose to take the basket from her. "Should we eat out tonight? What are you in the mood for?"

Selene's face filled with horror as she quickly shook her head. "What if we run into Lily? I'm terrified."

Vincent couldn't help but chuckled. Selene's timid nature just made him adore her all the more.

"What are you afraid of when I'm with you? I only meant don't go wandering when I'm not around. If you want to go somewhere, just tell me and I'll accompany you," Vincent said, looking at her intently.

Selene considered this for a moment. "Could we have seafood? The neighbors mentioned seafood is particularly good right now."

Vincent smiled. "Let's go."

Selene jumped up excitedly. With seafood on the menu, who needed organic vegetables?

She happily put on her shoes and pulled Vincent toward the door. The driver was already waiting outside, smiling as he opened the car doors for them.

"We'll stop at the mall first," Vincent instructed.

"Why the mall? What do you need?" Selene asked impatiently, always needing to know everything.

"We'll see what you need when we get there. You should have more clothes at home." Vincent pulled out a card and handed it to Selene. "Spend whatever you want. No limit."

Selene was stunned. Vincent being this generous? "No limit? Could I charge a hundred million dollars?"

Vincent chuckled. "Does the mall sell anything worth a hundred million dollars?"

Selene pouted. "I was just asking."

"Smart aleck."

The car pulled into the underground parking garage. Vincent intended to get out first and open Selene's door, but she gave him no chance, darting out like a rabbit.

There wasn't a trace of wealthy pretension about her.

Vincent smiled resignedly and caught Selene's arm before she could dash off. "Don't leave my sight. Stay within one foot of me at all times, understood?"

Selene nodded obediently. "Understood!"

Vincent held out his arm, indicating she should hold onto it.

Selene, thinking they wouldn't encounter anyone familiar in the mall, reluctantly complied under pressure.

To their surprise, as soon as they exited the elevator, they ran straight into Liam and Maeve, who were shopping and sampling food around the mall.

Their eyes met.

Selene quickly let go of Vincent, instinctively pushing him away from her.

Maeve and Liam exchanged glances, then narrowed their eyes, scrutinizing Selene. "Selene..."

Selene forced a laugh. "What a coincidence."

Liam glared at Vincent. "You stole my person!"

He glowered at Vincent, then turned to Maeve. "Don't hold me back. I need to fight him today."

Maeve, with Irish stew in one hand and ice cream in the other, clearly had no hands free to restrain him.

After an awkward moment, Liam stepped forward and grabbed Selene. "Why are you with him?"

"I'm... undercover, working close to him. I'm practically becoming his wife now," Selene whispered.

Liam gave her a thumbs up. "Well done! Make him fall for you, make him unable to resist you, then dump him."

Selene shook her head vigorously. "No, no. If he dies, I get everything."

Liam paused, suddenly wondering if Selene had been brainwashed by Vincent or fallen into some cult. "He looks like he'll live forever. You're waiting for his inheritance? Who knows who'll die first."

Selene froze, suddenly enlightened.

Was Vincent playing her?

"Are you finished chattering?" Vincent frowned, gesturing for Selene to follow.

Selene had no time for further conversation with Liam and hurried after Vincent.

Liam and Maeve exchanged glances, taking synchronized bites of their Irish stew.

"I think Selene's being deceived," Maeve remarked.

Liam nodded. "What should we do? Should we abort the mission?"

"Let's follow them! Keep an eye out," Maeve said, pulling Liam along as they quickly followed, keeping to the shadows.

Besides Maeve and Liam, someone else was watching Vincent and Selene from a distance.

Maeve, ever vigilant, grabbed Liam's arm. "See that person with the camera taking photos? They're photographing Selene and Vincent."

Liam finally noticed. "You're right, they are."

"Let's track them," Maeve narrowed her eyes dangerously as she followed.

"Wait," Liam hesitated. "Vincent is dangerous. Many people want him dead. Should we call the police?"

"One person I can handle. You call the police if necessary, but let's watch first without alerting them."

Meanwhile, after shopping extensively and enjoying ice cream along the way, Selene looked at the numerous bags carried by Vincent and the driver. "Haven't we bought too much? Are these things expensive?"

She was already being extravagant by her standards—she would never normally shop for clothes at the mall if she weren't using Vincent's card. Yet she had still been restraining herself.

"Everything you've bought combined doesn't equal a tenth of the value of Mr. Hamilton's wristwatch," the driver teased.

Selene was instantly indignant. "You're that extravagant?"

"Do you like it?" Vincent displayed the watch on his wrist.

"I do..." Selene was practically salivating.

"There's a women's version. I could buy it for you," Vincent said casually.

"How much is it?" Selene asked quietly.

"Not expensive," Vincent glanced at her. "Just a few million dollars."

Selene gasped. "Don't buy it! I don't like it anymore. Something that expensive would weigh down my wrist... it would hurt."

"Just give me the cash equivalent instead," she added, determined not to miss an opportunity.

Vincent glanced at her and smiled indulgently.

Not far away, the person photographing Vincent and Selene sent the pictures to Lily.

Lily's message came back: [I'll find a way to distract Vincent. You take the opportunity to grab Selene.]

As the photographer was about to reply to Lily, Maeve snatched the phone from their hand.
