Chapter 975 Lily Wants to Marry Vincent
Selene felt her confidence wavering at the sight of Lily's fierce demeanor. She was intimidated, afraid Lily might lash out at her.
But the thought of those billions of dollars instantly revitalized her. She spread her arms protectively in front of Vincent's hospital bed with newfound courage, ready to face whatever came her way.
Deep down, she felt Lily had already gotten lucky with Xavier's fortune. It wasn't fair for one woman to claim two inheritances. After all, even among gold-diggers, there should be professional courtesy, right?
Lily frowned at Selene. "What business do you have here? Get out!"
Selene swallowed nervously but stood her ground. "I-I can't... he's injured. I need to take care of him. He can't die right now."
Vincent rubbed his forehead in exasperation. He hadn't wanted Selene to confront Lily directly—they clearly weren't in the same league.
But he was surprised by Selene's boldness for the sake of his fortune. Her concern wasn't exactly heartwarming; she just didn't want him dying before they got married, when she couldn't claim his inheritance.
"Get out," Lily commanded, dismissing Selene entirely.
Selene looked back at Vincent, suddenly fearful.
Vincent's eyes seemed to ask, ":Now you're scared?"
Selene blinked, admitting her fear.
"Wait outside," Vincent instructed her.
After a moment's hesitation, Selene left, but she felt strangely upset.
Why did she have to leave? Hadn't Vincent said Lily wasn't his girlfriend? The liar.
Feeling inexplicably hurt, Selene sat on a bench outside, fuming. Vincent was such a liar. A complete jerk.
Inside the room, Lily rushed to Vincent's bedside, reaching for his wound, but he caught her wrist, stopping her.
After tonight's events, Vincent no longer had the time or patience to continue this charade with Lily. Besides, with the Murray family situation resolved and Lily eagerly collaborating with his enemies, confrontation was inevitable.
His objective had been achieved. The performance could end.
"Vincent..." Lily's voice was hoarse with emotion. "Let's get married."
She clung to her last hope that the black market informant had lied to her, that Vincent truly cared for her. If they could just get married, nothing else would matter. She could even forgive him for using her—after all, she had used him at the beginning too.
She watched him anxiously, desperate for his approval.
But Vincent only looked at her and said, "I'm sorry."
He sat up in bed. "Lily, we're not right for each other."
Was that it? A simple apology and rejection to dismiss her?
Lily lowered her head and laughed bitterly, her eyes reddening.
"Not right for each other?" Tears welled in her eyes. "But we've been together so long. You said we belonged in the same world. Why are you saying this now?"
Vincent studied her. "You already know, don't you? Didn't the black market contact tell you everything?"
Lily clenched her fists. She would never outmaneuver Vincent.
She gave a small laugh. "He told me the Murray family shares were acquired by your Muskow company. That you've had control of the Murray family all along. That you've been playing me..."
"That's not entirely accurate," Vincent replied coolly. "Yes, there was an element of manipulation, but we were both using each other."
He saw no reason to keep pretending. "Lily, I don't need to spell it out. We're adults. Business maneuvers, emotional manipulation—aren't these your specialties? You did the same with Xavier and Rhett. Why should it be different with me?"
Lily leaned back in her chair, laughing as tears streamed down her face. After being on guard for so long, she'd still been deceived, losing to a man who didn't love her.
She accepted her defeat. It didn't matter. What she couldn't have, no one else would. And if no one could have him now, she still had a chance in the future.
"Vincent... I concede," Lily wiped her tears, forcing a smile. "You're right. We're adults. Let's just say we were only discussing business before..."
Vincent remained silent.
Lily extended her hand. "From now on, Vincent, can we start over? Beyond business, I want to explore something more with you."
She gathered her courage, knowing that winning Vincent would smooth her path forward. He was so cunningly brilliant... and she found herself falling harder for him.
Women naturally admired strength, and Lily was no exception. She had no interest in men she could manipulate. Finally finding someone who could outmaneuver her—she couldn't let him go.
"I'm sorry, but I have no interest in pursuing a relationship with you," Vincent didn't take her hand.
Lily took a deep breath and stood. "That's all right. You might not be interested now, but that could change."
Her confidence was unwavering. "You're hurt. Rest well. Whoever harmed you—I'll find a way to make them pay."
Lily believed Vincent would eventually return to her because of his conflict with the black market. After all, only she knew who was behind it.
At the doorway, she looked back at Vincent one last time. Her eyes revealed her frustration, but Vincent's expression remained cold.
She knew she had lost completely, but she refused to accept it. She couldn't believe Vincent was beyond her reach.
Leaving the room, Lily saw Selene sitting anxiously on the bench.
Selene jumped up when she saw Lily and scurried toward the hospital room, clearly intimidated.
Lily watched her coldly. That kind of woman was only fit to be a man's plaything.
Inside the room, Selene rushed in. "Did you two fight?"
"Why would you think that?" Vincent asked.
"I saw her crying," Selene said quietly.
"She asked me to marry her. I refused," Vincent answered honestly.
"She's so greedy! She already got the Powell family fortune and now she's after yours? That's too much." Selene huffed, sitting on the edge of the bed.
Vincent couldn't help but smile. He reached out to ruffle Selene's hair, his eyes softening with genuine affection.
Outside the room, Lily had intended to leave but wanted to discuss the black market situation with Vincent first. She wondered if his anger stemmed from her refusal to reveal who was behind it.
But as she approached the doorway, she froze.
She saw Vincent gently ruffling Selene's hair, his expression filled with a tenderness she had never seen before—a look of pure adoration.
Lily felt her entire body go rigid, her breath catching. She could accept losing, could accept never having him—but that special affection that belonged only to Vincent should not be given to someone else.
