Chapter 936 Avery and Rhett Officially Divorce
Lying in bed, Tom couldn't stop thinking.
He realized how little he truly knew about Connor.
When Connor was fighting with Owen, Owen had sent those childhood photos showing Connor being abused. But if it had just been Owen hitting him, it shouldn't have caused such severe psychological trauma and germaphobia.
And Beck being described as a psychopath...
Any connection to that man couldn't possibly be good.
At Avery's residence, Rhett was in a hurry. He'd recently met a wealthy young woman at a party who had shown interest in him. Seeing potential advantages, Rhett had eagerly suggested meeting her father. The woman explained her father wouldn't meet any boyfriends unless marriage was on the table.
This accelerated Rhett's timeline. "I've signed the divorce papers. You get nothing," he told Avery coldly.
Avery laughed, leaning back on the sofa. "Rhett, do you really think I'm going to make this easy for you?"
Rhett eyed her warily. This time he'd come prepared with bodyguards.
Avery didn't seem remotely intimidated. "You want me to walk away with nothing? I have evidence of your affairs, domestic violence, and those compromising videos. Since you're being unreasonable, I'll see you in court."
Rhett pointed at her angrily, emboldened by his security detail. "You bitch, you're trying to play me? I've tolerated you long enough. Don't push your—AHHH!"
With lightning speed, Avery grabbed his finger and slammed it against the table. The bodyguards couldn't react fast enough before a sickening crack echoed through the room.
"I hate when people point fingers at me," Avery said in a low voice.
Hearing the scream, Avery's own security team entered—seven or eight men in black suits from Richard Security, personally selected by Betty.
Seeing Avery was well-prepared with more guards than he had, Rhett had no choice but to swallow his pride. Sweating from pain, he stammered, "What do you want? You're the one who wanted the divorce!"
"You leave with nothing. I want half of your Murray Group shares," Avery demanded deliberately to provoke him. She didn't even want the Hawthorne shares, let alone the Murray family's—she considered them tainted.
"Avery, you're dreaming!" Rhett shouted furiously. "You're not getting my shares. What do you really want? Just name your terms!"
Rhett was desperate to finalize the divorce, fearing his new heiress might slip away.
"Fine. I'll forget the shares. Your other assets—we split 70/30. I get 70."
Rhett was so shocked he momentarily forgot the pain in his finger. "Avery, you greedy bitch!"
Avery smiled coldly. "If we can't negotiate, then leave."
Rhett trembled with rage. "Fine! Avery, meeting you was the worst luck of my life. You win!"
He grudgingly signed. Money could be earned back, and his personal assets weren't substantial compared to his shares.
Avery examined the signed agreement with satisfaction. "Good. City Hall, tomorrow at 10 AM."
Rhett stormed out, essentially paying for a clean break.
Sitting on the sofa with calculated composure, Avery instructed her assistant with ice in her voice: "Have the legal team liquidate all his assets. Distribute the proceeds equally among every woman Rhett has harmed." After a pause, she added, "If any of those women are no longer alive, give her share to her immediate family."
Her assistant nodded. "Yes, Ms. Hawthorne."
Shortly after Rhett left, a bodyguard entered. "Ms. Hawthorne, Mr. Beck Murray is asking to see you."
Avery smirked. Beck and Rhett tag-teaming her?
"Show him in," she said coolly.
Her assistant remembered something. "By the way, Mr. Murray visited Mr. Connor Hawthorne today."
Avery paused, a sense of foreboding washing over her. "Beck went to see Connor?"
The assistant nodded.
Avery rubbed her temples.
She should have anticipated that Beck, in desperation, would try to ally with Connor to fight for Hawthorne Group shares.
Beck was a truly vile man. If he couldn't get what he wanted from Avery, he would definitely harass Connor next.
Even if Avery managed to stall Beck, he would still go after Connor.
After a moment's thought, she texted Connor: [Connor, you should leave Silverlight City for a while. Take some time away.]
Connor quickly replied: [Don't worry about me. I have patients I can't leave right now.]
As a psychologist, Connor primarily treated severely depressed patients at risk of suicide. He couldn't simply walk away—that would be selfish.
Avery texted with concern: [Are you sure you're okay?" Avery pressed, concerned.]
Connor replied casually: [Yes, it's all in the past now.]
As if he truly had moved beyond those memories.
"Avery, my dear!" Beck entered. "I hear you and Rhett are having divorce troubles. Tell me what's wrong—I'll make it right for you."
Avery laughed coldly at his transparent act. "You're too late. Your son and I are already divorced."
Beck's expression darkened momentarily, surprised by how quickly Rhett had finalized things.
But perhaps this was for the best...
"Avery, I've always had high hopes for the Hawthorne Group. What happened to you and your father was truly unexpected," Beck said, sitting across from her. "We were family once. Even if you and Rhett are divorced, our business relationship shouldn't end. Rather than selling your Hawthorne Group shares to outsiders, sell them to me. Name your price."
Avery feigned shock. "You want the Hawthorne Group shares too? I thought they were just a burden I couldn't sell. Had I known you were interested, I would have saved them for you."
Beck smiled. "Yes, we're family. Better me than strangers."
"But..." Avery's smile faded. "I've already sold them. They're no longer mine to control."
Beck's face immediately darkened. "Avery, you're deliberately making an enemy of the Murray family? I believe we've never done anything to wrong you."
"Your son abused me while I was pregnant, cheated with multiple women, and even has illegitimate children. You say you've done nothing wrong?" Avery replied with a cold laugh.
Beck knew Avery was turning the tables, but he had no choice but to accept it.
He stood up angrily and left.
Since he couldn't make progress with Avery, he would have to target Connor again!
Connor had buried his scars deep all these years. The public only knew he'd been abused by Owen as a child, but they had no idea what Owen had really done to him...
The deeper Connor buried his past, the more it proved how much he feared it being exposed.
