Chapter 789 Amelia said she didn't care anymore

Amelia's body stiffened slightly, her eyes darting around unnaturally as she forced a smile to ease the awkwardness. "He's bound to get married sooner or later. He's already old enough, if he doesn't get married, he'll be single forever."

Clearly, something was off with her, but she was trying to pretend. "Whether he gets married or not has nothing to do with me."

"I just want you to be happy," Nathaniel said softly.

Amelia smiled, her face pale. "I'm very happy now, aren't I? The ocean is just a short walk away, there are flowers, and I have my little garden that I love. I'm very happy."

"That's good," Nathaniel said again. "Don't make the same mistake again, Amelia. You deserve a happy life, not someone like Nolan."

Nolan was a natural-born cage. He would lock someone up tightly.

Amelia nodded. She wouldn't make the same mistake again.

Nolan's residence.

Because of social engagements, Nolan had drunk a lot and had a terrible headache.

After taking a shower, he lay on the sofa, lost in thought.

In the past, when he drank at social events, Amelia would run around his living room in her slippers and nightgown, making honey water for him, washing fruit, and wiping his face.

Clearly, Amelia wasn't good at taking care of others, but she took great care of him.

Nolan used to think she was a nuisance.

But now, she was gone, completely vanished from his life.

He actually started to miss her.

What a jerk.

Sitting up, Nolan poured himself a glass of honey water and went to the balcony to smoke.

The water wasn't sweet, but the cigarette was bitter.

Frowning, he stubbed out the cigarette.

He remembered that he had quit smoking since the day he found Jasmine.

Actually, his smoking habit was never that strong, Jasmine couldn't stand the smell of smoke, so he quited.

Amelia couldn't stand the smell of smoke either.

He hadn't smoked in a long time.

But recently, he started again, always feeling inexplicably irritable.

At his age, with a successful career and everything going smoothly, he had started to feel restless.

Nolan always felt he was too idle, but even when he was busy, he still thought of Amelia.

He remembered how cautious she was, and the haughty yet uncertain tone she used when treating him like a male model. "I'll keep you, is three million dollars a month enough?"

Thinking of Amelia back then, Nolan couldn't help but laugh.

She couldn't even take care of herself, and now she was living alone. Was she doing well?

"Leo, did you find out what I asked you to?" he called his assistant.

"Mr. Cunningham, I sent it to your phone. Miss Carter is doing well now, she opened a small bed and breakfast." Leo replied.

Nolan glanced at his phone, a bit surprised.

In the photo, Amelia was wearing a straw hat, trimming flowers in a garden.

She was wearing cute overalls, her face looked tender, and she seemed to have gained some weight.

Frowning slightly, Nolan felt a bit jealous. She never gained weight no matter how much he fed her when she was with him.

Now that she was gone, she seemed to be thriving.

As he scrolled down, his face grew darker because he saw Nathaniel in the photos.

"I think Nathaniel is too idle," Nolan said in a deep voice. "Doesn't he have anything to do?"

"Mr. Cunningham, it seems the crew is filming there, it won't be for long," Leo quickly added. "Mr. Cunningham, didn't you agree to develop a relationship with the chairman's daughter? So, you shouldn't disturb Miss Carter, right?"

Nolan even had to meddle in Amelia's relationships.

He paused, suddenly recalling what Fiona and Ryan had said.

He was too controlling, meddling in too many things.

He was the one who let Amelia go. What was he thinking? Why was he still interfering in her life?

"I understand." Hanging up the phone, Nolan felt even more irritable.

Looking at the photos Leohad sent, Nolan deleted them immediately.

There was no possibility between him and Amelia, so why do these meaningless things?

Silverlight City Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

The news that Nolan, the first child of the Cunningham family, was getting engaged to the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce's daughter, Elaine Long, was spreading like wildfire. The two were a perfect match, and if Nolan married Elaine, he would an absolute partner in Silverlight City.

The chairman would undoubtedly prioritize future business opportunities in Silverlight City for his son-in-law.

For the Cunningham Group and the Cunningham family, Nolan's marriage indeed maximized their interests.

But Cordelia wasn't very happy.

The company's development had its limits. Nolan had always been too ambitious, always wanting the best for the company and the family, striving for the greatest benefits.

But he always forgot about himself.

"Nolan, have you thought it through? Do you really want to be with Elaine?" Cordelia asked.

Nolan held up his wine glass, looking around. "Mom, this is the best choice. Since you want me to get married, Elaine should meet your requirements for a daughter-in-law."

Indeed, Elaine was excellent, whether in terms of education or connections.

It was said that she had a good character and was a nice girl.

But Cordelia still sighed. "Nolan, marriage is a lifelong matter. Love is far more important than these things. I've been through it. A marriage without love is just an empty shell. It's unfair to both you and Elaine."

After a moment of silence, Cordelia spoke again. "Nolan, I know your dad was a jerk. The Cunningham family and I have relied on you all these years. I know you care about your siblings, this family, and me, but you also need to think about yourself sometimes."

In Cordelia's memory, Nolan had grown up too early, he seemed to have skipped the rebellious phase.

When his two younger brothers were going through their rebellious phases, he was already standing on his own.

When he should have been rebellious, he witnessed his father's infidelity and Cordelia's constant sorrow.

He was the first child, so he had no right to be rebellious, no right to compete with his siblings.

He always left the best for his brothers and his mother.

He always forgot that he was once just a child too.

Now that he was grown, this mindset was deeply ingrained and hard to change.

He was too stubborn.

He said nothing.

Given his status and position, was he allowed to be rebellious?

Didn't he envy Edgar and Edward? He did, but he knew he was the eldest brother, and he knew the responsibilities on his shoulders.

Only if he took on everything could his siblings have the right to be rebellious, to live their own lives and have their own personalities.

He had to make sacrifices.

"Nolan." The chairman came over, bringing his daughter.

Elaine wasn't stunning, but she looked like a gentle and graceful woman.

"Cordelia." Elaine greeted Cordelia politely.

Cordelia smiled and nodded, then spoke to the chairman. "Let them get to know each other. If their personalities match, we will support them. If they don't, our families will still be close, and I'll treat Elaine as my daughter."
