Chapter 472 Evelina Was Framed
Evelina's face darkened; Karen had clearly lost all sense of shame.
"Is something wrong?" Cordelia asked.
"I'm going out for a bit." Evelina grabbed her coat and headed out.
"Victor, go with her," Cordelia said, feeling uneasy. She asked Victor to drive Evelina.
Victor nodded and followed Evelina.
At the hotel, Alex's breathing was rapid, and he irritably tugged at his tie. Something was off with the drinks tonight.
He had attended a social meal hosted by some business partners from Silverlight City. But he hadn't expected Karen to be there.
Word was that Karen was now managing the Wilson Group. Benjamin seemed to have found true love and was willing to give up his managerial role in the company to divorce Karen.
Alex didn't expect someone to drug his drink.
"Alex, open the door. I know you're in there," Karen cried from outside.
"I just want to talk to you about Evan. He's our son. He refuses to go to the hospital, and his leg injury has worsened. The doctors say it needs to be amputated. He's so distressed that he's on a hunger strike and threatening suicide. Please, Alex, come back and see him."
Alex rubbed his temples in frustration. He knew that if he opened the door, he would make a mistake.
His last bit of rationality led him to call Evelina. However, he was barely holding on.
A few days ago, he went to the Wilson family to see Evan with Evelina, but Karen found various excuses for refusing them.
Evan hadn't shown up either, and Alex had thought Evan didn't want to see him.
How could his leg injury suddenly worsen to the point of needing amputation?
"Alex, open the door," Karen persisted, sounding a bit impatient.
Clearly, she had known the timing of the drug's effect and stopped pounding on the door or expecting Alex to open it himself.
Instead, she had the hotel staff unlock the door.
At this critical moment, as long as she and Alex had any substantial interaction, the media would report it, and combined with Evan's situation, Alex would surely soften towards her.
As for Evelina...
Karen sneered and turned to her subordinate. "Did Alex call Evelina when he entered?"
"Yes," the subordinate replied. "It seems the Cunningham family has already answered. Evelina only brought a driver with her; she must be coming to see Alex."
Karen laughed. "Ridiculous!"
Evelina thought she could stop it by coming here.
Unfortunately, Karen wouldn't let her ruin her plans. Alex was hers from the very beginning.
She had lent him to Evelina for years, and it was time to repay. "Tell Sophia, I've created the opportunity for her. She better not disappoint me."
Karen knew she had to let others do the dirty work.
Her relationship with Annabelle and Sophia was more like a game of swapping murder targets.
Sophia would deal with Evelina for her, and she would deal with Cordelia for Sophia.
But before that, Sophia had to prove her worth.
The room door was unlocked, and the hotel manager trembled as he looked at Karen.
Karen sneered. "Get out."
She pushed open the door and walked in.
Locking the door behind her, Karen stepped further into the room.
She found the suite was empty.
Karen frowned. Where was Alex? It was on the twenty-seventh floor.
Hearing a noise from the bathroom, Karen smiled and walked towards it.
Karen tried to enter, only to find that Alex had locked the door.
Karen's expression shifted; Alex was clearly onto her.
Did he know she had someone drug his drink?
Karen tightened her grip on the doorknob. If that was the case, she couldn't afford to fail now.
She had already arranged for the media, and Evelina had no chance to save him.
"Alex, after all these years, do you really have no feelings for me at all?" Karen probed.
In the bathroom, Alex poured cold water over his head, trying to stay awake.
The drug Karen had given him wasn't an aphrodisiac; it was more like ether, making him feel very disoriented.
In the past, he had refused to believe Karen could be so scheming. Although they hadn't overcome all the obstacles to be together back then, the Karen he remembered was kind-hearted.
He couldn't believe she would go this far.
"Alex, what's wrong? You scared me." Karen continued to feign concern.
Alex was struggling to stay conscious.
Outside, Karen had someone unlock the door, signaling them to be quiet.
Fearing he wouldn't hold out, Alex punched the mirror, the pain and blood momentarily clearing his mind.
As the bathroom door opened, Alex burst out, instinctively running.
Karen quickly had someone block, Alex.
"Alex, where are you going? How did you get hurt?" Karen feigned surprise, pulling Alex back into the room.
The others left the room.
On Willowbrook Lane...
Victor took a shortcut, but as they reached a side street, he noticed a car tailing them. "Ma'am, there's a car tailing us."
"Can you shake them off?" Evelina asked calmly.
"Probably not." Victor frowned, his nerves taut for the first time. "They're professionals, and there's likely a blockade ahead."
Based on his experience, the car behind only was tailing, but there would definitely be a car blocking them ahead.
"We're in trouble," Evelina said.
"Ma'am, I'll speed up and slow down in the blind spot on the side street. You'll have to jump out, and I'll lead them away," Victor gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Evelina took a deep breath. "What about you?"
"It's my duty. Don't worry about me." Victor glanced back and accelerated.
Evelina took off her high heels and left them in the car, stretching her neck.
Victor told her, "I'll count to three."
He began the countdown.
"Three."
"Two."
"One."
Victor swerved into the street's blind spot and slammed on the brakes.
Evelina seized the moment to jump out, closing the car door forcefully.
Victor sped away, and Evelina hid behind a pile of trash.
The car behind them continued the chase, unaware that Evelina had jumped out.
Evelina's ankle was twisted, and her knees and elbows were covered in injuries and blood.
She stood up awkwardly, leaning against the wall and limping away.
She cursed inwardly, 'Damn Karen.'
But as she reached the alley, a car pulled up, and men wearing hats and masks got out with ill intentions.
Evelina clenched her fists, her eyes cold as she stared at them.
It was evident that Alex being framed was just an excuse. Karen not only wanted Alex but also wanted to eliminate her.
She was truly insane.
She was even more ruthless than Evelina had imagined.
A dull thud sounded as a black car crashed into the scene before the men could act against Evelina.
Richard and his retired fellows stepped out of the car.
The men turned to leave, their faces dark.
At the end of the street, police cars pulled up.
"Did you think the police in Silverlight City were useless?" Ryder sneered, cursing.
