Chapter 494 What is the Truth About Betty?
The Dreamwave Ocean's Junkyard Warehouse.
Richard came alone, but he wasn't foolish enough to be caught unprepared. His people were close by.
"You actually showed up," Brade said, leaning against the door, smoking.
Brade took a drag and gestured around. "This place has been abandoned for years. It's so far from downtown, no one wanted to buy it."
Richard frowned, confused.
"I bought it. What do you think?" Brade asked.
Richard thought Brade was nuts. "Get to the point."
Brade chuckled. "The point is, I'm staying in Silverlight City for a long time."
This implied he wasn't giving up on Betty and would keep pursuing her.
Richard's face darkened. "Lay a hand on her, and you're dead."
"Then we'll both lose, and no one gets her," Brade said, clearly unhinged.
Richard clenched his fists, ready to strike.
But Brade didn't seem like he was here to fight. "What do you want?"
"I want everything from the Hughes family, including Betty," Brade said quietly.
"You're dreaming." Richard grabbed Brade's collar, ready to punch.
Brade laughed. "Richard, how long have you known Betty? I love her just as much as you do."
"You don't deserve her." Richard punched Brade in the face.
Brade's bodyguards moved to intervene, but Brade stopped them.
Sitting on the ground, Brade wiped the blood from his mouth, laughing. "You don't deserve her either. You're just a poor kid with no background. She's way above you."
"At least I'm better than you, a madman who keeps hurting her!" Richard tried to strike again but was stopped by the bodyguards.
Richard glared at Brade. "She was kidnapped because of you!"
"Is that what she told you?" Brade's eyes darkened, looking hurt.
Richard frowned but stayed silent.
Betty rarely talked about the kidnapping, and he never pressed her.
But seeing how much Betty hated Brade, he always thought Brade was behind it to threaten Steven.
Betty did seem to say that.
"Both she and Steven were kidnapped. The kidnappers released one after getting the ransom. Steven chose to save himself. It was his fault!" Brade said, agitated.
Richard clenched his fists, saying nothing.
He still didn't fully understand what happened back then.
"The kidnappers made Steven choose between himself and Betty. He chose himself! They took Betty and eventually sent her out of the country."
"I couldn't find her. I searched everywhere, used all my connections, even the dark web. I went crazy looking for her! Steven just told everyone he wanted to save Betty, no matter the cost!"
Brade laughed bitterly. "He got all the credit. No one knew what I did!"
To find and save Betty, to protect her from those people, he paid a great price.
He got to where he was today, with all the stains on his hands, all because of that kidnapping.
He was caught in a web of trouble, unable to break free, unable to escape.
But Betty always hated him.
"I want everything from the Hughes family because it should've been mine!" Brade was losing it.
Richard didn't know how to respond. He didn't understand Steven, didn't know the real story, and couldn't tell how much of Brade's words were true.
"No matter your reasons, she's my wife, my love. If you touch her, I won't let you go," Richard warned. "Whatever happened back then doesn't justify hurting her now."
"You think I'm hurting her?" Brade sneered. "I'm just competing with you. If you can't win, that's on you."
"You're a madman," Richard said, disgusted by Brade's tactics.
"Anyway, I didn't come here to see you," Brade said, wiping his mouth and glancing at a small room next to the warehouse. "Go in. Someone wants to see you."
Richard eyed Brade warily.
"Scared?" Brade smirked.
Richard said nothing and walked to the small room.
Inside, he saw Sophia. His face darkened.
Brade had set this up to make him see Sophia.
Sophia must have made a deal with Brade, which was why Brade went this far.
And Brade used Betty to lure him out, showing he valued Sophia highly.
Was there some partnership between Brade and Sophia?
"Richard," Sophia said, her face full of longing, eyes red. She raised her hand to touch his face. "Let's talk. I'm your mother."
Richard slapped her hand away, frowning. "Don't touch me."
Sophia burst into tears. "Richard, I'm your mother. Do you hate me that much? I had my reasons for abandoning you. Now I want to make amends."
"I don't need it," Richard said coldly. "I have no parents, and I don't want any. Give up."
He turned to leave.
"Betty is your wife. I heard she was married before and had a deceased ex-husband," Sophia said, trying to get a reaction.
Richard glared at her. "I don't care about your relationship with Brade. If you touch Betty, I won't let you go."
"I'm your mother, and she's your wife. I wouldn't harm her. A mother wants the best for her child and a good relationship with her daughter-in-law," Sophia said, wiping her tears. "But, Richard, you don't seem to know your wife very well."
"I found Brade because I discovered some things," Sophia said, placing documents on the table. "Steven's death might be linked to Betty. Everything in the Hughes family fell into her hands, which means she's not simple. Her kidnapping might have been staged."
Richard didn't even glance at the documents. "Do you think I'd believe you, a stranger, over my wife?"
