Chapter 763 Steven's Way of Dealing with Richard
Richard wore his headset and adjusted the volume. "Asha, notify me immediately if there's any anomaly."
Asha rolled her eyes at Richard, clearly thinking that no one would dare harm Steven at such a high-profile event.
Richard ignored followed behind Steven.
Steven was busy greeting some high-society individuals.
They were very enthusiastic and even brought up Betty."Betty is young and beautiful, and being with Mr. Hughes is a powerful alliance."
Most people in the business circle recognized Steven.
After all, Steven could provide Betty with absolute commercial value.
"Do you know why they all acknowledge me as Betty's husband?" Steven looked at Richard.
Richard remained silent.
"Because what I can give Betty, you can't." Steven reached for the champagne handed over by a waiter.
Richard instinctively took it. "Mr. Hughes, since you eacaped from narrow, you should know to be cautious."
Steven smirked. He was well aware of the need for caution, he just wanted to see if Richard was truly diligent in his role as a bodyguard.
To his surprise, Richard was indeed taking his job seriously, which was quite amusing.
"Are you worried it's poisoned? How about you drink it for me?" Steven said with a smile. "I think that's a great idea."
Richard frowned and refused outright. "A bodyguard's job is to ensure your safety, not to test for poison."
"What if I insist on drinking it?" Steven grabbed a glass of wine and was about to drink it.
This time, Richard didn't stop him.
Steven frowned. "Aren't you supposed to protect me?"
"If you're determined to seek death, there's not much I can do." Richard replied politely.
Steven's mouth twitched, and he placed the glass in Richard's hand. "If you drink this for me, I'll reduce your time by my side by one day. The bet sill stands."
Steven was certain that someone would tamper with the drinks tonight, and he wanted to test Richard.
"Record it first." Richard took out his phone and had Steven repeat his words.
Steven gritted his teeth and repeated, only then did Richard drink the champagne and said in a low voice, "This glass isn't poisoned."
Steven sneered and walked ahead. "I'm curious why Betty suddenly changed her taste to like someone like you. She used to prefer someone equally matched."
Richard remained silent, just following and staying alert.
"You've met Priya and Tara. I don't really like them, but they're Betty's parents, so there's no choice. I believe you feel the same way, right?" Steven looked at Richard and smiled. "We hate them but are helpless."
The grace of upbringing was hard to evaluate.
"They treat Betty as a pawn, a tool and a stepping stone. I really don't like it." Steven continued talking to himself. "I actually feel sorry for her."
Richard didn't speak but agreed with Steven's words. He worked so hard not to gain Priya and Tara's approval of himself but to gain their approval of Betty.
He tried his best to have them acknowledge that Betty had found true love, that she didn't need a business marriage, and could live happily just for love.
He also wanted to make Priya and Tara realize they were wrong, then repent for selling Betty to the Hughes family.
Unfortunately, Richard found that no matter how hard he tried, it was useless.
They were blinded by profit and power.
All they saw was value.
Steven continued, "Do you know why Betty learned Taekwondo, Judo, and Sanda? Was it because she was strong-willed from a young age? No, she probably never told you that she was weak and slow-growing as a child, always the one bullied in class, right?"
Richard's steps paused.
Betty had never told him these things.
She always seemed to show him her most perfect side.
"She told the teachers and her parents, it didn't help. So she learned to face it alone. She once told me that the only person who can change their fate is themselves." Steven took a glass of wine from a woman approaching and handed it to Richard.
The woman was a bit displeased but still tried to flirt with Steven. "Mr. Hughes, long time no see."
Richard didn't speak, directly drank the wine, coughed, and frowned. "It's not champagne, the alcohol content is high, she has bad intention"
Richard exposed her intentions right in front of the woman, making her lose face.
Steven, on the other hand, laughed out loud.
The woman glared at Richard and turned to leave.
Steven looked at Richard. "You can hold your liquor well."
Richard remained silent.
He usually wouldn't get drunk.
After a while, Richard felt a bit dizzy. "That woman added something to the drink."
Steven glanced at Richard and laughed. "What did she add?"
Richard frowned, clenched his fists.
What else could it be? That woman clearly wanted to sleep with Steven.
"Looks like things are getting interesting." Steven laughed. "Betty hates it when her things get dirty. If you lose control tonight and sleep with that woman, do you think Betty will still want you?"
Richard glared at Steven angrily, holding onto the railing.
Steven stepped closer to Richard, smiling. "Richard, I also hate it when others touch my things. I really want you dead."
Richard loosened his tie and looked at Steven. "This counts as a work injury. I'm leaving early."
Richard tried to leave, but Steven had Asha block his way.
"Richard, Betty is strong-willed. Only I can give her what she wants. Only I can help her reach the heights she desires. If you truly love her, you should step aside." Steven advised Richard.
Not far away, a sexy woman in a white dress approached, deliberately getting close to Richard. "Nice body. I have a room upstairs, we can..."
Richard slapped her hand away and, while still rational, tried to leave.
But Asha wouldn't let him pass, and the woman kept pursuing.
Seeing Richard unsteady, the woman seized the opportunity to try and hug him.
Unfortunately, before she could touch Richard, there was a scream.
Betty appeared out of nowhere, grabbed the woman's wrist, and dislocated it. "Get your filthy hands off my man. Do you think you can touch him?"
The woman, in pain, with tears in her eyes, glanced at Steven and ran away.
Betty glared at Steven, pulled the unsteady Richard into her arms with one hand, and declared her sovereignty. "Steven, it's been years, and you're resorting to such low tactics."
Richard smirked and, before being taken away by Betty, showed Steven three fingers.
He had drunk three glasses for him, meaning three days would be deducted.
Steven clenched his fists in anger.
Was Richard doing this on purpose? Looks like he underestimated him.
