Chapter 624 Tom Got Hit by Jasmine
"Something up?" Samuel asked, feeling a bit jittery himself.
Jasmine shook her head. "Ethan never ignores my calls. Even if he's swamped, he'd at least shoot me a text."
"There's something I should probably tell you," Samuel said, worried something was off. He found it strange too.
"What is it?" Jasmine's heart skipped a beat.
"My brother's Raymond, you know that, right?" Samuel scratched his head. "He called me out of nowhere today, saying it's best to take you along on this business trip and tell you that this project is super important."
Samuel finally got it—Raymond had purposely sent Jasmine away.
Jasmine took a deep breath, realizing Raymond had arranged for her to be sent away. "Something must've happened."
Howard was still missing. He was at the end of his rope, knowing he had nowhere to run, so he'd definitely target Ethan.
Jasmine forced herself to stay calm. This wasn't the time to freak out. If she froze, she wouldn't be able to do anything.
Her fingers were a bit stiff, but Jasmine pushed down her anxiety and called Liam.
But Liam didn't pick up either.
"Mr. Cunningham?" Ben saw Jasmine's worried face and quickly ran over. "Is the project not going well?"
"Not that, we're heading back to San Francisco," Jasmine said hoarsely.
Ben glanced at Samuel and got that something must've happened in San Francisco.
When they left today, Ethan reminded him three times to take good care of Jasmine and make sure she was okay.
"Going back now? It's so late." Tom, who was a bit clueless, couldn't read the room. "Why not tomorrow? It's not safe at night."
Jasmine ignored Tom and hurriedly walked out.
Her legs felt weak, and she almost couldn't stand.
Ben quickly stepped forward to support Jasmine. "Don't worry, we'll head back right away."
"Ben, you're just spoiling her. She's had too much to drink; she should just go to bed. It's too dangerous to go back to San Francisco this late." Tom frowned, stepping forward to block Jasmine.
He had promised Ethan and Connor that no matter what, he wouldn't let Jasmine return to San Francisco today.
Although Tom didn't know why she couldn't go back, he had to follow orders, especially since he was getting paid double.
"Move." Jasmine stood up straight, her voice icy.
Tom was stunned for a moment, feeling a chill down his spine. Why did Jasmine's eyes seem so cold?
Tom had known Jasmine since they were kids. Even when she was bullied badly, her eyes were always filled with fear and timid innocence, like a scared little deer that would never grow fangs. But this time, something was different.
Tom asked, "Jasmine, why are you in such a hurry to go back? Can't it wait until tomorrow?"
Before Tom could finish his sentence, Jasmine's slap had already landed.
She trembled as she breathed, clenching her fists, and turned to get into the elevator. "Ben, take me back."
Ben frowned and glanced at Tom. He was good in every way except for his big mouth.
Tom realized he had said something wrong and wished he could slap himself.
After standing there in a daze for a while, he rubbed his cheek and looked at Samuel. "Wait, who just slapped me?"
Samuel glared at Tom. "Tom, you really deserved that."
Tom quickly chased after them. "Wait, what happened?"
"You should be grateful not many people have beaten you up since you were a kid, or you'd be dead by now." Samuel sighed helplessly. "Ethan might be in trouble."
Tom froze for a second, then, realizing what Samuel had said, he frantically started jabbing the elevator button.
Ethan couldn't be in trouble.
The next morning at Capital Hospital, Amelia woke up to a still-dark sky.
The crappy weather and rain made her feel a bit woozy.
"I'm not dead," Amelia whispered. She had actually made it.
"Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?" Elijah asked, and when Amelia shook her head, he finally let out a breath. "You scared me to death. I'm just glad you're okay."
"Nolan..." Amelia's voice was raspy.
She didn't even know what she was hoping for.
Hoping he'd come to see her?
"He didn't answer his phone last night, so..." Elijah said awkwardly.
Amelia slowly closed her eyes. Her eyes hurt so much.
"Feeling better?" The doctor came in for rounds and checked on Amelia's condition.
Amelia nodded. In reality, the anesthesia had worn off, and she was in so much pain that her face was pale.
"Does it hurt?" the doctor pressed on her abdomen and asked.
Amelia shook her head, gritting her teeth through the pain.
The doctor frowned. "Tell the truth, the anesthesia's worn off; of course, it hurts. You're lucky they stopped the bleeding in time. Otherwise, you could have lost your uterus or even your life."
"You were this close to needing surgery. You really dodged a bullet," the female doctor beside him said and sighed. "You're so young, but you..."
Halfway through her sentence, the female doctor stopped, respecting the young girl's privacy.
"Such a big issue, such a major surgery, and no family around? If it weren't for our professor being at the hospital by chance, you might not have made it." The doctor frowned. "Afraid to tell your family? What about your boyfriend?"
Amelia's eyes reddened. "I don't have a boyfriend."
Elijah felt guilty and looked away.
The doctor was angry but helpless.
"Take good care of yourself. Try not to get out of bed for a while," the doctor said before leaving.
Amelia propped herself up on her arms, sweating from the pain. "Phone."
Elijah quickly handed her the phone.
Amelia wanted to call Nathaniel but was worried about disturbing his work. While she was hesitating, her long-estranged mother called.
Amelia's eyes reddened. Ever since her mom and Lucas secretly sold her things, they hadn't contacted her.
When she was on the brink of death during surgery, she had no family or loved ones by her side.
"Yesterday, I tried to contact your family. Lucas answered and said if you died out there, they wouldn't care and not ask for money," Elijah said softly, sighing. "Your family is really something else."
Amelia wiped her tears and answered the call.
Her mom said, "Amelia, where are you? Come back quickly. Your dad's in trouble! The detention center called and said he had a sudden heart attack and needs surgery. They need $100,000. Hurry up to get the money!"
Amelia sat up straight, trembling in pain. "What's wrong with Dad?"
She replied, "How would I know? The hospital said they need money for surgery, or he won't make it. Hurry and get the money."
"Mom, I don't have any money." Amelia cried. Elijah had already told them last night that she had barely survived.
"You don't have money? That's your dad. You have to find a way." Amelia's mom cried, too.
"Didn't you just sell the necklace Grandma left me? Use that money for Dad's treatment," Amelia demanded.
"That money..." Amelia's mom stammered and started crying. "Amelia, that money is for Lucas's tuition. He found a car he likes, and it's more convenient for him to get around. The money is for the car."
