Chapter 856 Edward Wished He Could Disappear

"At home, he has an older brother, a younger brother, a sister in poor health, and a sick mother," Hestia spoke again.

Edward felt a chill down his spine; this might work to fool Hestia, but to deceive Hestia's mother? That's courting death.

Besides, Edward wasn't stupid. Hestia was openly defying her mother now, but her sweaty palms on the way here showed she deeply loved her mom.

Edward felt a bit like crying without tears; this was self-inflicted.

"Actually..." Edward wanted to explain.

Electra's expression had changed dramatically, from initial anger to being impressed by Edward, and now to indifference.

It was a performance worthy of a film academy textbook, executed flawlessly.

Saul, standing nearby, looked at Edward and breathed a sigh of relief. With Edward's poor family background, Saul still had a chance.

"Mrs. Sharp, please don't get angry. The doctor said your leg has a slight fracture and needs proper care," Saul stepped in to play the good guy.

Although Electra didn't think highly of Saul either, she still spoke up because he had saved her. "Saul, I didn't mean to trouble you. I just heard you were back, and Hestia said she was getting married. I thought it was with you, so I called to confirm, but then an electric bike came out of nowhere."

Hestia's mouth twitched. So it was an electric bike accident.

Saul had deliberately left out details, making her think it was a serious car accident, and she had cried in panic on the way here.

"Mrs. Sharp, I also want to get back together with Hestia. I know she still has feelings for me," Saul sighed, feigning sadness. "Hestia, even if you're angry, you shouldn't joke about your marriage. The society is very realistic. Without money and with such a burdened family, you won't be happy in the future."

Electra's face remained sullen, saying nothing.

"Hestia, I left before to further my studies and improve myself so I could support you. You shouldn't waste yourself like this," Saul spoke again.

Edward found Saul increasingly annoying and spoke in a low voice, "That's none of your concern."

Edward was too well-mannered. If it were Edgar here, Saul would have been speechless in minutes.

"Saul, thank you for your help, but please leave now. We have more to discuss," Hestia raised her hand, signaling Saul to leave.

Saul took a deep breath, knowing when to stop. After all, Hestia's mother wouldn't agree to her marrying so casually.

He nodded and politely addressed Electra, "Mrs. Sharp, take care. Call me anytime if you need anything. I've already paid the medical bills."

"No need. Give me your bank account number, and I'll cover the medical expenses," Edward took out his phone, signaling Saul to provide his account number.

But Saul smiled provocatively, "No need. With your difficult family situation, save it for your siblings and mother. This amount is nothing to me."

He even patted Edward's shoulder and turned to leave.

Edward grabbed Saul's elbow, "Bank account number."

Saul frowned, seeing Edward's insistence, and coldly provided his account number.

After transferring the money, Edward escorted Saul out and closed the door.

The room's atmosphere was tense. After a while, Electra spoke first, "How did you two meet?"

Hestia replied coldly, "Blind date."

At the same time, Edward replied, "Stanford University."

Edward was momentarily stunned.

Hestia cautiously looked at Edward, "Well... Stanford University... He was an outstanding graduate, invited back by his mentor. We met during a lecture."

Electra's expression softened slightly, "What do you do?"

Hestia said, "He is an ordinary employee."

However, Edward replied, "Heir to a family business."

Hestia glared at Edward. What a boast.

"Going back to inherit land and farm?" Hestia muttered. "Mom, stop asking. He's from an ordinary family. Don't fantasize about me marrying better than the neighbors. I just want to marry Edward. It's enough that he's good to me. Whether he has money or not, it doesn't matter to me."

Electra's expression softened a bit more, "He's good to you?"

"He's very good to me," Hestia said directly.

Edward quickly nodded in agreement.

Electra snorted, muttering, "You have good taste, not bringing back an ugly guy to anger me. What's so great about the neighbor marrying a government worker? Her mom brags all the time, but her husband looks like a short winter melon..."

Hestia was also angry, they both stubbornly refusing to back down.

Edward felt a bit prickly on his back.

"You mentioned you have an older brother and a younger brother. Are they married?" Electra began probing again.

"My older brother is married. He's currently in Sunrise City. My sister-in-law is pregnant and due soon. He married into her family and lives with them," Edward explained softly.

Electra nodded and quickly spoke, "Hestia's father passed away early. Our family can't afford to have you marry in. If you want to marry Hestia, the money for the bride are still necessary. I need to see your family's attitude. In Boston, this amount is eighty thousand dollars, not a penny less."

"Mom!" Hestia was angry. "I've told you, I don't want his or any gifts from you!"

Electra was also angry, "You're such a fool. You say you don't want it, but it shows how much they value you. Do you think raising you all these years is worth just eighty thousand dollars? I'm doing this for you."

"You've been saying it's all for me, but all these years, you've been suffocating me!" Hestia shouted angrily.

Edward quickly hugged Hestia's shoulders, "We'll give it! Our family will meet all your demands!"

"No way!" Hestia glared at Edward. She was using the dowry issue to fight against her mother's control over the years.

She was betting on her inner resolve.

"All my life, you've arranged everything for me. Whatever you wanted me to learn, I had to learn. You said good students wear uniforms, so I had only two patched-up uniforms from childhood. You said good students shouldn't dress up, so I lived in self-doubt all my life!"

"You constantly compared me to other kids, wanting me to excel in everything. Besides studying, you didn't let me experience anything else. That's why I got deceived in college, why I got tricked by taxi drivers. You thought you were protecting me, but you were imprisoning me!"

Electra looked at Hestia in shock, unable to say a word.

Edward wished he could be invisible at this moment.
