Chapter 619 Howard's Last-Ditch Effort

At Ethan's place, he was perched on the edge of the bed, his arm in a sling, totally relying on Jasmine for everything.

He finally got his chance and was pretty pleased. "Jasmine, my hands are dirty; can you wipe them again? Jasmine, my legs need wiping too."

Jasmine looked at Ethan, exasperated. "You have your left hand."

"Oh, my left hand hurts too. Maybe it's broken?" Ethan pretended.

Jasmine laughed, tears in her eyes. "Stop faking it."

"My legs, wipe them." Ethan grinned.

Jasmine lovingly wiped Ethan's legs.

Ethan lifted his chin, pointing to the other leg.

Jasmine ignored him and tossed the towel on his leg. "Do it yourself, I need to freshen up."

She walked into the bathroom, finally sighing in relief. Splashing cold water on her face, she calmed down.

Ethan was fine, and so was she.

Jasmine's fingers were stiff. She straightened them, telling herself it would be okay and the police would catch Howard.

She thought she was fine and cured when she saw the sun. Severe depression had somatized her body's last defense. In prison, her body was so rigid she couldn't even commit suicide. Only after taking medication did she have the strength to try.

But now, clouds could cover her sun at any moment, and her condition seemed to be worsening again.

Ethan was her antidote, her life, her only courage to keep going.

She didn't know what she would do if something really happened to Ethan. By then, she probably wouldn't be able to control herself.

Looking down at her belly, Jasmine smiled with teary eyes. "Baby, you seem to have come at a bad time. What will Mommy do if something happens to Daddy?"

Jasmine didn't know what to do. She loved this child and wanted to give birth to Ethan's child. But if something happened to Ethan, what would she do? She couldn't be so selfish as to let this unborn child die with her.

"Jasmine, I need to use the bathroom." Ethan was afraid Jasmine would overthink things if left alone, so he stuck close to her.

They were truly the perfect pair for salvation. One was passionate and warm, the other gentle and soothing.

Ethan was genuinely willing to give all his patience to love and care for Jasmine, holding his rose delicately and watching her bloom.

"Jasmine, do you have confidence in the Everhart Group's investment?" Ethan deliberately diverted Jasmine's attention, not wanting her to overthink.

"Ian is a formidable opponent. Even Samuel says he's tough to deal with. He's been involved in new energy in Muskow for a long time, so he has more experience than Samuel and me." Jasmine was a bit worried.

"Experience sometimes means nothing in the face of talent." Ethan hugged Jasmine from behind, comforting her softly. "Your husband has talent. I'm here."

Jasmine looked at Ethan with teary eyes. "You have always to be here."

She thought, 'Spoil me, and don't push me away again.'

Otherwise, that would be too cruel.

Ethan nodded. "I'll always be here."

At night, Jasmine fell asleep quickly and soundly, probably due to the pregnancy.

Ethan received a call from an unknown number.

"Hello?"

"Ethan, are you feeling smug? Do you think you've beaten me?" Howard was on the other end of the line.

Ethan sneered, already guessing it was Howard.

He had successfully escaped and was bound to call.

"You killed my mom. We haven't settled that score yet," Ethan's voice was rough and low.

He walked out of the bedroom and slumped onto the living room couch, his figure heavy with sorrow.

His father had conspired with the nanny to kill his mother. She had struggled until she heard Howard's voice, then stopped and left in resignation.

How could Ethan not hate? How could he not?

"Ethan, I'm sorry about your mom. But I'm your dad, your blood relative. If you want to drive me to death, you won't have it easy either," Howard was desperate, determined to take Ethan down with him to eliminate any threat to Bradley.

"Dad?" Ethan laughed bitterly. "In your eyes, you're only Bradley's dad, right?"

Howard snorted. "Ethan, it's time to end this. Don't tell anyone, especially not the police, or you know what I'm capable of! Tomorrow night at ten, I'll be waiting for you at the unopened beach at Dreamwave Ocean."

Ethan knew Howard was making his last desperate move. If he didn't go, Howard might do something even more terrible.

But if he went, it was likely Howard would try to take him down with him.

After hanging up, Ethan's fingers clenched tightly, veins bulging, knuckles white. It was indeed time to settle things with Howard.

"Howard contacted me and told me to meet him tomorrow night at ten at the unopened beach at Dreamwave Ocean," Ethan leaned on the sofa and called Brandon.

They had anticipated Howard would reach out to Ethan.

"It's too dangerous. You don't have to go. I'll go instead," Brandon was worried.

"No need. I'll settle this with him," Ethan glanced at the time. "Tomorrow morning, go to the police station alone and inform a trusted officer, set up in advance."

Howard didn't want him to inform the police? He was dreaming. Not reporting it would be like waiting to be dragged into the abyss with him.

"I thought you'd be impulsive," Brandon chuckled.

"Are you kidding? I have a family. Why would I be impulsive? Is he worth it?" Ethan sneered.

No one was more important to him than Jasmine.

"Good. I was afraid you'd be blinded by hatred. Over the years, you've had the urge to kill Howard more than once but managed to hold back. I really..." Brandon wanted to say he felt sorry for him but thought it sounded awkward between two men. "I really admire you."

"Don't tell anyone about this, especially not Jasmine. She can't handle it," Ethan whispered.

"Don't worry. Even if I die, I won't let anything happen to you," Brandon said seriously, though it sounded like a joke.

"Don't say such things," Ethan mimicked Jasmine's tone, scolding Brandon.

Both fell silent, then burst into laughter.

After all these years, it was finally coming to an end.

"Jasmine still has a lot of issues with me. After this is over, you need to clear my name," Brandon's voice was slightly hoarse.

He understood well that he couldn't let anything happen to Ethan. No matter how dangerous it was, he would protect Ethan first. He might die, but he would never let Ethan die.

Ethan nodded, "Okay."

"Explain it clearly to her. Please don't leave it ambiguous. You have a wife and child, but I don't even have a girlfriend yet," Brandon joked to lighten the tense atmosphere.

"Brandon," Ethan was silent for a long time before speaking seriously. "You don't owe me anything anymore."

He thought, 'Don't risk your life for me.'
