Chapter 503 Evan Only Wants to Commit Suicide
Evelina frowned. "Jasmine's my goddaughter, and even as her godmother, I can't force her. You know what Evan did to her."
"Sorry," Alex mumbled, looking down. "I didn't think it through, Evelina. Please don't be mad."
Alex realized he was being selfish.
Evelina was angry too, but seeing Alex like this, she held back.
He looked exhausted, with red eyes, clearly not having rested well.
The last time she saw Alex like this was over twenty years ago when she lost her child.
Back then, Alex stayed by her side day and night, not even letting her drink water by herself, afraid she might try to commit suicide.
During that time, Alex was also exhausted and desperate.
Sitting on the sofa, Evelina was silent for a long time before speaking. "I'll give it a shot."
Alex was stunned and looked up. "Evelina."
"I said I'll try. I'll call Jasmine, but whether she comes or not is up to her," Evelina said hoarsely. "Consider it repaying your kindness."
Alex stood up, panicked. "What kindness? What do you need to repay me for?"
His voice was anxious. "Evelina, you don't need to pay me back. Let's not make the call. I'll think of another way!"
Evelina looked at Alex and asked, "If we don't call and Jasmine doesn't come, will Evan die?"
If he had to choose between his son's life and this already strained marriage, what would he choose?
Alex was silent, looking desolate.
Evelina lowered her eyes and smiled. She didn't want to make things harder for Alex. "Alright, let's not talk about it. Get some sleep. I'll handle this."
"I choose you," Alex finally said, his voice full of pain. "Evelina, when you almost died years ago, I swore I'd never let you get hurt again. I'm sorry I broke that promise. But if I have to choose between you and Evan, I choose you."
He had lost twenty years of fatherly love with Evan, and he would make up for it with money or shares. Whatever Evan wanted, he could give.
But he didn't want to let go of Evelina.
Evelina's eyes reddened, and she smiled weakly. "Alex, we can't go back. Sorry' doesn't fix what happened. You chose him over me. It hurts."
Evelina wasn't angry at Evan, but this felt like a thorn in her throat, impossible to swallow or spit out.
It was hard to accept that her husband had such a grown illegitimate child.
In the bedroom, Evan had driven everyone away and was almost crawling to the door.
Leaning against the door, he could hear Evelina and Alex's conversation, even though they were being very quiet.
But he still heard it clearly.
He seemed to understand what Jasmine had said back then.
Jasmine said, "Evan, my very existence is a mistake, isn't it?"
"Yes, your existence is a mistake. Because of you, Serena suffered so much in your family while you lived these twenty-one years so comfortably."
He had once said such cruel words to Jasmine, and now it was all coming back to punish him.
Taking a deep breath, Evan sat on the floor, leaning against the door.
Now, Jasmine had found her biological parents. She had met Ethan, who loved her, protected her, and trusted her unconditionally.
With Richard, Nolan, Edward, and Edgar as her brothers, Jasmine didn't need him anymore.
Now, he felt like the odd one out.
As long as he was around, he'd always be a barrier between Evelina and Alex, a pawn for Karen, Jasmine's nightmare, and a cripple who couldn't move normally again.
"Evan, what do you want for lunch today?" Evelina asked, finding him quietly reading a book by the bedside.
Evelina was surprised; he seemed much calmer.
Evan smiled. "Auntie, I want pizza and baked potatoes."
Evelina felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint it.
In the afternoon, when the psychologist Elbert arrived, Evan was unusually cooperative, even chatting and laughing.
"Hi, I'm Elbert, here to check on your recovery," Elbert said, knowing Evan resisted psychologists, so he posed as a rehab doctor.
Evan leaned against the headboard, not responding.
He knew Elbert was a psychologist but didn't expose him.
"Do we know each other?" Elbert asked.
Evan finally spoke, "Your memory isn't great. We went to university together, and you once pursued my sister."
Elbert smiled. "You mean Jasmine? You're mistaken; I never pursued her."
"I remember everyone who pursued my sister. You sent a love letter, but I took it," Evan said, not expecting to meet Elbert again this way.
Back then, he could confidently warn Elbert to stay away from Jasmine, but now he was so miserable he could only lie in bed, needing others to take care of him.
"I was wronged. I was just delivering a love letter to a classmate. I had only heard of Jasmine and didn't know much about her," Elbert laughed, trying to use the past to open Evan's heart.
But Evan seemed to have shut his doors and windows too tightly.
Even so, Evan smiled. "Really? So I misunderstood you back then?"
"Of course, you misunderstood," Elbert said, glancing at Evan's legs. "I remember you liked playing basketball in school. We played together, remember?"
Elbert intentionally touched on Evan's sore spot to see his reaction.
But Evan's hands just stiffened slightly, showing no other reaction.
Elbert frowned, sensing something was wrong.
If Evan had reacted strongly, it would have been a sign he could still be helped.
In car accidents, the most severely injured often seemed to lose their sense of pain.
Evan's current state was like a tightly stretched string about to snap.
"Have you thought about the future? Any plans?" Elbert asked seriously. "Marriage, children?"
Evan laughed sarcastically. "Do you think any woman would want to marry a cripple like me?"
"Your legs are just injured; it doesn't mean you can't have children," Elbert said, leaning back in his chair, his long legs looking comical on the small seat.
Elbert was very handsome, the kind of strikingly handsome that stood out in a crowd. The Long family was known for their good looks.
Evan blushed at Elbert's words, helplessly rubbing his forehead. "I know you're a psychologist, but I'm not sick. You can leave now."
"I'd like to stay for dinner if that's okay?" Elbert asked shamelessly.
"Not really." Evan frowned. "Because this isn't my home."
He just wanted to get through these three months and then disappear completely.
