Chapter 540 Turn Against Each Other
Fiona stood frozen, pale as a ghost, while Jasmine, equally pale and stiff in her chair, got what Cordelia was saying.
Back then, Jasmine was swapped out as part of Sophia's plan.
Sophia switched her daughter with Cordelia's, hoping Cordelia would raise her kid and snag the Cunningham family's inheritance and shares.
Sophia was smart. She probably didn't expect Cordelia to do a paternity test with her daughter herself. She thought Cordelia would at most have her daughter take a paternity test with William.
After all, Fiona was Willian's kid; no doubt about it. Any test would confirm that.
But Fiona got sick, and Cordelia got suspicious about the blood type. Instead of testing with Willian, she tested with herself.
She gave birth to her daughter, and a mom can sense these things. It wasn't shocking that Cordelia noticed something was off.
"Fiona," Nolan said, turning to look at her.
Fiona's eyes welled up, and after a long pause, she said, "Do a paternity test."
Her voice was raspy, and she was shaking all over.
Her worst fear had come true.
She had her doubts too. Why were she and Jasmine swapped? Was it on purpose?
If it was, she couldn't face Jasmine or anyone in the Cunningham family.
Even if it wasn't her fault, she still couldn't face them.
When they found out Jasmine wasn't a Wilson, the whole family turned cold towards her.
Jasmine sat there, trembling.
Her mind was a mess, and her fingers were ice-cold.
Ethan held Jasmine's hand and pulled her into his arms. "It's okay. It's all over. Everything's over."
"Mom," Jasmine said after a long pause. "It's all over. We don't need a paternity test."
If the truth came out, Fiona would have no place in this family.
Nolan knew that if the truth revealed Fiona was Willian's daughter, a result of Sophia's scheming, Fiona would be out of the family for good.
Whether Fiona was an enemy's daughter or a side chick's, it would hurt Cordelia the most.
Jasmine wasn't being soft or selfish; she feared the truth would make Cordelia even more miserable.
Better to pretend not to know and say nothing.
Cordelia's eyes were red, her fingers clenched and white. "We need to know the truth."
She wasn't just after the truth but also her twenty years of persistence.
"Mom, why do you need the truth so badly?" Nolan asked, eyes red, gripping Fiona's hand tightly.
Willian stayed silent, head down, knowing he was the main culprit.
Cordelia stopped talking. Her feelings were probably hard for others to get.
Jasmine took a deep breath and stopped talking too.
Back when Serena stormed into the Wilson family, pointing at her and crying, revealing she wasn't a Wilson, Jasmine was confused and helpless.
Fiona's feelings now were probably even more complicated.
Because over the years, Cordelia knew Fiona wasn't her daughter but still treated her as one.
This kindness felt like a chain, making her even more miserable.
Sophia was a sinner this family would never forgive.
"Fiona, let's go," Nolan said, looking down and holding her hand, wanting to leave.
He believed that as long as the truth wasn't revealed, Fiona would always be family, his sister, just like Jasmine.
But if it was to be revealed, Fiona would be kicked out of the Cunningham family.
Fiona followed Nolan, eyes red, feeling lost and confused, unsure of what to do.
"Nolan, you should understand Mom. Even if she knew Fiona's true identity, she wouldn't take it out on her. She's insisted for twenty-one years, just for the truth! You shouldn't be so selfish!" Edward slammed the table, making the room tense.
If Sophia knew the Cunningham brothers would argue and possibly turn against each other because of her daughter, she might not have gone to such lengths to support Lily and place her among them.
Nolan looked at Edward. "You talk big, but I've never stopped helping Mom find the truth! Have you thought about Fiona? When the truth comes out, how will she handle it? We could do it more gently."
In Nolan's view, they could find out the truth secretly without telling Fiona.
But Cordelia called the whole family together today, called Fiona over, and exposed this in front of Willian, partly out of resentment.
She was still venting her anger on Fiona.
Nolan understood his mother; she was bound to have resentment. But Fiona had grown up in this family; she was innocent too!
"You think you're a good brother! You always protected Fiona because of what happened with Jasmine. But she isn't my sister! I don't need to disregard my mom and Jasmine's feelings to prioritize hers!" Edward's words were harsh but true.
Everyone is selfish.
Everyone has a balance in their heart, and how it tilts determines their stance.
Edward stood unconditionally with his family. If he had to rank them, Fiona would come after his mom and Jasmine.
But Nolan was different. He placed too much importance on Fiona, putting her on the same level as family.
This usually wasn't a problem, and Edward could accept it. But at critical moments, there had to be a distinction! Edward couldn't stand Nolan's attitude.
"Edward!" Nolan angrily grabbed Edward's collar. "Listen to yourself! She's lived in this family for over twenty years! Is blood relation that important to you? I've never denied Jasmine's importance to me, and I've done my best to make up for it. Don't twist my words. Right now, I'm just..."
Nolan didn't know how to explain his thoughts.
Probably no one would understand him.
He wasn't favoring Fiona or choosing to protect her over Jasmine.
It was the situation itself; he wanted to avoid causing Fiona more harm.
Fiona stood there, stiff.
Actually, what Edward said was already very gentle.
If she really was Sophia's daughter, she would hate herself.
