Chapter 548 Amelia Do not Like Nolan Anymore

At Nolan's place, he took time off to make sure Fiona stayed home and rested.

"I got you some cherries and strawberries," Nolan said, stepping out of the car and waving the fruit at Fiona, who was by the window.

Fiona glared at him. "Nolan, isn't this basically illegal detention?"

Nolan just smiled.

He worried Fiona wouldn't rest properly and feared Edward and the others might push for a paternity test.

Some things were like Schrödinger's cat; you couldn't know if the cat was dead or alive until you opened the box. Even if you felt the cat was probably dead, as long as you didn't say it, there was a chance it might be alive.

Fiona needed that slim chance to escape her guilt.

"Nolan, you can't keep me locked up forever. Are you planning to take care of me for life?" Fiona sighed as he walked in. "You have to get married eventually, and I still need my own life even if I don't get married. Avoiding the problem won't solve it."

Nolan frowned and stayed silent for a while before saying, "I won't get married."

He had no plans to marry.

Fiona didn't know what to say. Nolan had promised to take care of her forever, but siblings needed some distance as adults. Besides, they weren't traditional siblings.

Even if there was a blood tie, she was just the daughter of his dad's mistress.

"That girl who said she owed you money, the one who came to clean, she's really pretty, like a Barbie doll. She's not a maid, is she?" Fiona smiled, changing the subject.

Nolan paused while washing the fruit but said nothing.

"I saw a phone in the bathroom with several missed calls. It's not yours; it must be hers," Fiona said, handing over Amelia's phone.

Nolan spoke quietly, "Just leave it there. She's always losing things."

Fiona squinted and smiled. "Nolan, something's up. You sound so indulgent when you say she's always losing things."

Nolan took the phone. "You're overthinking it. She's just a maid."

Fiona replied, "Oh. But Nolan, if you meet someone suitable, don't miss out. You might regret it forever."

Nolan looked at Amelia's phone, almost out of battery, wondering when she'd come back for it. "I won't. I won't get married."

He definitely wouldn't marry Amelia.

Outside, Amelia saw the door ajar and cautiously peeked in to see if Nolan was there. If he wasn't, she'd grab her phone and leave.

But as soon as she peeked in, she saw Nolan and Fiona chatting and laughing.

And Nolan said he wouldn't get married.

Amelia never thought she could marry Nolan; it was impossible. But hearing him say it still stung.

Standing awkwardly at the door, Amelia didn't know whether to leave or say hello.

Fiona picked up a cherry, and when she turned around, she saw a head at the door. She almost fell in surprise.

Nolan reached out to steady Fiona, frowning at the door.

Amelia, realizing she was spotted, stood up awkwardly and said softly, "Sorry, I left my phone here."

Nolan's face darkened as he handed Amelia her phone.

Amelia took the phone with her head down and quickly left.

"Nolan, go see her off," Fiona urged, pushing him towards the door.

Nolan frowned, stayed silent for a bit, then followed Amelia out.

"Why are you running?" Nolan called out quietly.

Amelia stopped, looking down nervously.

"I didn't mean to leave my phone. I didn't know you were there. If you need an explanation, I can give one," she said softly, hoping Nolan didn't hate her too much.

"I'll take you back," Nolan said, gesturing to the car.

"No need." Amelia shook her head.

Nolan looked annoyed. "Get in the car."

Amelia glanced at Fiona, who was watching from the window. "Won't she misunderstand?"

Nolan didn't respond, just gestured for her to get in.

After a moment, Amelia got in the car.

"Where do you live?" Nolan asked.

"Just drop me off at Willow Lane," Amelia replied after a pause.

She felt sad. Nolan knew she was homeless, which was why she stayed at his place. But with Fiona there, she couldn't stay like a beggar.

"Willow Lane?" Nolan glanced at her. That area was under demolition and chaotic. It wasn't safe for her.

But he said nothing more. Her safety was her own business. He didn't want to meddle.

"Nolan, you promised me before. Can you let my dad go? He deserves punishment, but not to die," Amelia said nervously, hoping to discuss it.

Nolan stayed silent until he parked outside Willow Lane. "Whatever crimes your dad committed, the police and judge will decide. It has nothing to do with me."

Clearly, Nolan had no intention of letting her dad go.

Amelia's eyes reddened. "What will it take for you to let us go?"

Nolan was impatient. "When you begged me to let him go, did you think about the people he hurt? Who are they supposed to beg for mercy?"

Amelia looked down, nervously picking at her fingers. "If you didn't intervene, my dad would have been sentenced normally. But you targeted him and provided so much so-called evidence."

Nolan looked at her. "Get out of the car."

Amelia's eyes filled with tears. "My dad is my mom's only support. She's weak. Even if she knows he's no good, she can't live without him. Can't you let us go? They all agreed not to pursue it."

Amelia had begged many victims, selling everything her family had—houses, collectibles, everything—to compensate them. Most agreed to settle privately, except Nolan. He offered the victims more benefits, encouraging them to continue pursuing her dad. It seemed like he wanted them dead.

Nolan frowned, very displeased. "Get out of the car!"

Fiona's condition had worsened, and she was allergic to alcohol. If she hadn't been rescued in time, she would have died that day. He would never let Lawrence go!

Amelia bit her lip and got out of the car. As soon as she closed the door, she couldn't hold back her tears.

"Nolan, I hate you!" Amelia shouted before running away.

She hated Nolan the most and would never like him again!
