Chapter 963 Where Did Things Go Wrong?
Vincent's Estate
Selene rode her electric scooter toward the gated community, determined to enter despite the obvious wealth disparity.
A security guard stopped her, looking her up and down skeptically. "Good evening, do you have an appointment?"
It was clear residents wouldn't arrive on a cheap scooter.
"Yes," Selene said confidently, calling Vincent. "Could you tell the security guard I'm expected?"
She handed her phone to the guard.
After a brief exchange, the guard's demeanor transformed completely. He hurriedly raised the barrier and welcomed her with unexpected deference.
"This way, please. Mr. Hamilton has been waiting for you."
Following her GPS, Selene navigated toward Vincent's mansion on Lake Island.
She wondered why Vincent had suddenly moved to this estate. Probably celebrating Lily's departure...
Once everything was settled, he'd likely get rid of the apartment Lily had lived in altogether.
This Lake Island estate had been left to Vincent by Ethan's mother. It wasn't just any property money could buy—it was designed by Ethan's mother herself.
Ethan preferred heights, so his mother had left him a penthouse. Vincent, preferring something more grounded, received this lakeside estate.
Originally, Ethan's mother had intended these properties as wedding gifts for both men. Vincent had been reluctant to use it, especially unwilling to let Lily taint it.
So the moment Lily left, he quietly moved in.
And Selene? She was just his delivery person, bringing Irish stew and burgers.
"Rich people are so weird," Selene muttered under her breath as she parked her scooter in the guest parking area. "Living in a multi-million dollar mansion but eating thirty-dollar burgers."
Carrying the food inside, Selene couldn't help but gawk at her surroundings.
This wasn't just a mansion—it was an estate.
Swallowing her envy, Selene felt almost overwhelmed. The elegant courtyard design, the streams with small bridges, the landscaped ponds—it was like walking into a private park.
Standing on a small bridge, Selene watched the fat koi swimming below. If only she could be reborn as a fish in a wealthy household.
"Enjoying the view?" Vincent's cool voice came from behind.
Selene jumped, nearly falling into the pond. Vincent caught her arm just in time.
"Do you always sneak up on people?" she asked, her face pale from the scare.
Vincent raised an eyebrow. "What? Did you want to join the koi in there?"
"Have you ever seen such a high-class mermaid?" Selene mumbled, extending her arms with the food. "Mr. Hamilton, your Irish stew and burger."
"You? A mermaid?" Vincent looked her up and down skeptically.
Selene felt defensive. "What's wrong with me?"
Vincent smiled, dropping the teasing. "I need a housekeeper and cook. Ten thousand a month, with bonuses for good performance. Interested?"
Selene was stunned. Poverty might be her current state, but this opportunity was too good to ignore. "I—I need to check with my boss first."
Vincent raised an eyebrow. "Fine."
Selene quickly ducked behind a decorative rock formation and called Liam. "Vincent wants me to be his housekeeper and cook."
"You've done well. Infiltrate his home," Liam responded excitedly, nearly pounding his desk. Selene was proving her worth.
"What about my job at the Raymond Group?" Selene asked hesitantly.
"Vincent stole all my projects. We're at a standstill," Liam said through gritted teeth. "Just stay close to him and wait for my instructions when the time comes."
"Understood."
Hanging up, Selene emerged from behind the rocks, trying to appear casual. "I suppose I could be your housekeeper, if you insist."
Vincent's mouth twitched. Did she and Liam always conspire so loudly? They clearly weren't concerned about being overheard.
"Boss, I'm not cleaning this entire estate by myself, am I?" Selene asked after touring both the front and back gardens.
She exclaimed inwardly, 'Oh my God, Vincent is way too rich!'
"Yes," Vincent replied flatly.
Selene felt faint. Ten thousand suddenly didn't seem like enough.
"I'm kidding. You'll just prepare my meals. Professional cleaners handle the rest," Vincent clarified, worried she might back out.
"Boss, if you don't mind me asking, how many properties do you own?" Selene inquired curiously.
"Too many to count. Why? Investigating my assets?" Vincent studied her.
Selene's mouth twitched. "Never mind..."
Vincent smiled. "Go make dinner."
"Boss, will your girlfriend be joining us? Should I cook for one or two?" Selene couldn't help asking.
Vincent frowned. "No woman is allowed in this house. Don't ask such foolish questions again."
After pondering this for a moment, Selene realized Vincent probably didn't even consider her a woman.
The Cunningham Group
"Nolan, the docks have been seized. Internal investigations show nearly half our people are connected to the mastermind behind this. When exactly was the Cunningham Group infiltrated?" Edward asked, troubled.
Removing these individuals would severely impact operations, but the threat had to be eliminated.
"We'll have to sacrifice some operations to remove the threat," Nolan said, equally concerned. "I suspect this person is someone internal."
Nolan had been theorizing that the black market's mastermind must be someone within the Cunningham Group—nothing else explained the level of infiltration.
"You don't think... it's you?" Edgar stood up suddenly, pointing at Nolan.
Nolan looked at him like he was an idiot. "Shut up."
The Cunningham Group had always been managed by the Cunningham family. HR decisions required their approval. How could so many operatives have infiltrated their ranks?
Where was the breakdown?
"Before you took over, Mom was running the company... and before her, Dad and Grandfather briefly managed it. These people," Edward examined the list carefully, comparing dates, "are all mid to senior management. They were hired during Mom's tenure, some even earlier..."
Edward suddenly looked up at Nolan. "Grandfather's people?"
Their grandfather had been formidable, but he was long dead.
They dismissed William entirely. If William had such capabilities, he wouldn't have abandoned the Cunningham Group and Sophia to start a new family elsewhere.
He was useless.
"Grandfather's most trusted person, besides Mom, was David, who left the company claiming illness a few years ago. He and William were childhood friends, practically raised together. He was once Grandfather's right-hand man. Could he be involved?" Edward speculated.
Nolan shook his head.
Suddenly, he began to wonder about William.
