Chapter 590: Has Richard Really Lost His Memory?

Deborah's face shifted a bit, and she threw on a smile, saying, "Ethan's got skills. He just bailed from the Raymond Group for some personal stuff. Hope y'all can keep an eye out for him."

The big shots nodded, giving Ethan the once-over. "Yeah, you got talent, but you're kinda reckless. That's why you climbed up just to crash down."

"You gotta chill out more. Maybe start at the bottom with us and work your way up."

They acted like they were giving Ethan a shot, but really, they were just dissing him.

Deborah wanted these guys to keep Ethan down.

Ethan needed to hit rock bottom to see her worth.

"No need for that. My man can start his own gig, join the Cunningham Group, or even go back to the Douglas Group. No way he's gonna be a grunt at your place," Jasmine snapped, stepping in front of Ethan, clearly pissed.

These folks seriously underestimated them.

"Young folks are too cocky and don't know their place," one of them sneered, eyeing Jasmine. "Heard you even did time. The Cunningham family found you too late to set you straight."

Ethan's eyes went cold as he shielded Jasmine. "Horizon Innovations Group's been circling the drain for years, and you still think you can lecture us?"

With a cold chuckle, Ethan added, "Funny thing, the Harper family went down, and the cops found some stuff, but oops, some key info and docs went missing."

The two execs' faces turned dark, and they bailed.

Jasmine realized they were following Deborah's lead because of some dirt. Bad moves would catch up with them, and these guys were in for it.

Deborah felt guilty and tried to speak. "Ethan, you and the president of the Raymond Group..."

Ethan stayed silent, so Deborah tried again, "Ethan, I was just trying to help. I'm sorry."

"Deborah, thanks for being considerate for my husband. If he needs help, I got him. We're married, so it's natural for me to step in. Your help might not be as effective since we're not that close, right?" Jasmine shot back, staring at Deborah.

Deborah took a deep breath. "My bond with Ethan is deeper than you think. We..."

Deborah hesitated and turned to Ethan. "Ethan, I really wanna help. No hidden agenda. She’s got it twisted. We're good friends, been through a lot, right?"

Deborah wanted Ethan to back her up.

Was Jasmine too clingy? Wouldn't Ethan get fed up?

Ethan smiled a bit. "Sorry, my wife's the jealous type. Don't say stuff that'll cause drama. We're not that close. Appreciate the offer, but no thanks."

With that, Ethan grabbed Jasmine's hand and walked off.

Deborah stood there, fists clenched in anger.

"Hey, being an illegitimate kid ain't your fault, but trying to be someone's side chick? That's a whole different story," Avery and her sidekick Kayla strolled over, with Kayla throwing shade from behind.

Deborah shot a death glare at Kayla. She'd had enough of this chick. "Shut it. You're just a lowly assistant. Who do you think you are?"

"She is my people," Avery stepped up, shielding Kayla.

Kayla was all talk and no bite, while Avery was tall and intimidating, always having her back.

Kayla stuck her tongue out from behind Avery. "You can be dumb, but don't be evil."

Deborah was fuming, barely able to breathe.

Avery smirked and gave Kayla a look. "Zip it."

"Avery, control your assistant. Her mouth's gonna get her in trouble one day," Deborah threatened, glaring at Avery.

"Chill. She eats and sleeps just fine. Even if you kick the bucket, she'll send flowers to your grave," Avery said lazily, hands in her suit pockets, oozing confidence.

Deborah huffed and stormed off.

"Why is she leaving? I am not finished," Kayla kept taunting.

Avery sighed. "Why do you poke the bear?"

"I was pissed," Kayla mumbled.

"Stay clear of her. I can't always have your back," Avery said, exasperated.

"Am I supposed to be scared of her? Did I learn Taekwondo for nothing?" Kayla shot back.

Being Avery's assistant, she was no pushover.

At Capital Hospital, the doc patched up Aleah's foot and put her in a wheelchair. Richard was in the hallway, tapping away on his phone.

"Richard," Aleah called softly.

Richard quickly pocketed his phone and looked at her. "Aleah, how you holding up?"

Aleah was a bit jittery, looking at Richard with hopeful eyes. "Richard, do you remember me? What about Betty?"

Richard rubbed his forehead. "Sorry, it's all fuzzy. I just remember we were classmates."

Aleah's heart raced, but she kept it cool. "You don't remember we were in love and planning to get hitched?"

Richard shook his head. "Sorry, I don't."

Aleah felt a pang of disappointment but stayed hopeful. "It's okay. We'll piece it together slowly."

Richard nodded.

"What were you typing on your phone? Texting someone?" Aleah asked, trying to sound casual.

She was worried Richard might not remember anything.

"Oh, I was just jotting down my memories so I don't forget again," Richard said, handing her his phone.

Aleah peeked at it and felt a wave of relief. Richard had written: [My mind's a blank. I don't remember much, except Aleah and I were classmates. She used to walk past my house every day on her way to school.]

Aleah's eyes welled up as she looked at him. "Richard, you do like me, don't you?"

Richard stayed silent. "Sorry, I really don't remember."

Aleah wiped her tears. "It's okay, it's okay."

Richard pushed the wheelchair and discreetly slipped his phone back into his pocket.

"Richard, you don't remember your mom either, do you?" Aleah asked.

"Nope, I don't," Richard shook his head.

Outside the hospital, Sophia walked up with a smile. "Richard, how you feeling? Any better? Do you remember me?"

Richard shook his head. "Sorry."

Sophia glanced at Aleah and clapped her hands with a smile. "It's okay. Just remembering Aleah is good enough. She's a great girl."

Richard didn't say anything, feeling a bit off.

But he kept it to himself.
