Chapter 508 Evan Regrets His Past Mistakes

Ethan left Elbert and went to find Connor, feeling down.

Elbert had a point: switching therapists often reopened wounds for patients.

Jasmine already didn't trust therapists, so Ethan was careful about choosing one this time.

Connor had his flaws, but his past anxiety showed he genuinely cared for Jasmine.

Howard had been making moves lately. While nothing extreme had happened yet, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that danger was imminent.

If Ethan got hurt or worse, he couldn't imagine what would happen to Jasmine.

For her sake, he was on high alert.

"Mr. Douglas, do you have an appointment?" the nurse asked.

Connor was swamped, especially after returning from injury leave.

"Tell him to clear his lunch break for me," Ethan said, frowning as he waited.

The nurse, not wanting to argue, called Connor during his break.

Connor wasn't surprised; he knew Ethan would come back after seeing Elbert.

Elbert was his junior, after all.

"Ethan came to see you?" Connor asked Elbert.

"Yeah," Elbert replied lazily. "Will Ethan kill us if he finds out we tricked him?"

Connor stayed silent, unsure what to say. Ethan held grudges.

Elbert continued, "Senior, I found a clinical trial subject for your treatment plan."

Connor was taken aback, rubbing his temples. "Elbert, we're different. II'm already a mess, but you should be careful."

Therapists and patients have a two-way relationship.

While helping patients, therapists absorb their negative emotions. Those with poor empathy can't be good therapists, but those with strong empathy risk carrying guilt if a treatment fails and a patient ends their life.

That's a heavy burden.

Connor carried that burden for Jasmine.

But Elbert was different; he had a bright, healthy soul and didn't need to conduct extreme experiments.

"Medical progress involves sacrifice," Elbert said indifferently.

He believed he could handle it, especially since Evan deserved it.

He wouldn't empathize with someone so hateful.

"I heard Evan committed suicide. Don't go too far," Connor warned before hanging up.

Elbert didn't explain; After all, Evan wasn't dead yet.

Connor left the treatment room, sipping hot water. "Mr. Douglas, how do you have time to see me?"

Ethan glared at Connor, then pointed to his watch. "Let's have lunch."

Connor raised an eyebrow. "Your treat or mine?"

"Yours," Ethan said, leaning on the sofa, looking reluctant.

Connor just smiled. "You come to see me and still want me to treat you?"

"I've been kicked out of the Douglas family, broke. Howard's suppressing me, and all my assets are in my wife's name. I can't afford to treat you," Ethan said casually.

But he hinted that if something happened to him, all his assets would go to Jasmine.

Connor's face darkened. He stood up straight, looking serious. "Do you think Jasmine wants your money?"

"I won't die," Ethan said, looking away, though he didn't sound too sure.

Connor filled his cup with hot water. "Give me thirty minutes."

He had another patient to see.

Ethan nodded.

At Capital Hospital, Evan's suicide attempt had shaken Evelina and Alex.

Alex tried to hide it, but his exhausted look showed he was on the brink of collapse.

He had just found out he had a son, only to learn that Karen had ruined him.

Karen had tormented their son to this extent, and now Alex saw her in a completely different light.

He never imagined Karen could be so cruel.

He deeply regretted not telling Evelina right away when he first heard the news. They could have investigated together and taken Evan away, avoiding this mess.

Now, his son had attempted suicide, had no will to live, and was left disabled.

His twenty-plus-year relationship with Evelina was falling apart.

At that moment, Alex felt he had truly hit rock bottom.

This made him unable to cope for a while, and he seemed to age a lot.

Evelina, with red-rimmed eyes, glanced at Alex. She couldn't deny feeling heartache.

After all, they had been married for over twenty years.

"You go out first; I want to talk to Evan," Evelina said hoarsely, asking Alex to leave.

Alex nodded and left the room.

Evelina sat by the bed, looking at Evan.

Evan's eyes reddened. "I'm sorry, Auntie, I..."

He wanted to say he didn't really want to die, just to atone, but he knew no one would believe him.

"Why did you do it? I want to hear your true thoughts," Evelina said, her gaze deep.

Evan lowered his head and took a long time to speak. "Auntie, I just wanted to see if slitting my wrists would hurt."

Evelina took a deep breath and sighed.

She roughly understood why Evan did it because of what he had done to Jasmine.

"I really didn't know it would turn out that way. I didn't know she would commit suicide. I didn't know I pushed her to that extent. I'm sorry." Evan suddenly lost control, grabbing his hair tightly, his voice choked, and his eyes swollen.

He truly regretted it to the point of madness.

"I deserve to die."

Evan cried, saying he deserved to die. He really didn't know how Jasmine survived those five years in prison.

He didn't dare to imagine.

"If you want to make amends, you must first stay alive," Evelina said sternly, looking out the window. "Evan, I won't cover up your mistake . What you did was wrong. Now that you've ended up like this, you should have the strength to bear it, understand? Don't be a coward who runs away. If you're wrong, face it bravely."

"Auntie, are you there? How's Evan?" Elbert pushed the door open and walked in, smiling warmly.

Evelina sighed in relief. With the therapist here, she felt reassured.

Besides, Elbert had a knack for winning over the elderly.

"Elbert, have a good talk with Evan."

As Evelina was about to leave, Evan instinctively grabbed her arm, a trace of fear in his eyes.

Yes, he was afraid of Elbert. He felt Elbert was here to get back at him.

But he couldn't say it because he was the one who had done wrong.

"What's wrong?" Evelina asked gently.

Evan was about to say he didn't want to see anyone and wanted to be alone, but Elbert spoke first, "I just saw Ethan and talked about Jasmine, so I was delayed."

Evan's body stiffened, and he slowly let go of Evelina's hand. "I'm fine."
