Chapter 496 Richard Didn't Let Aleah Go
Betty sighed in relief. "I'm just glad you're okay."
"I can handle myself. I was worried about you." Richard rubbed Betty's head. He didn't trust anyone's words about her; he only trusted his feelings and what he saw.
Betty's eyes reddened, and she hugged Richard, her voice choked. "Let's go home," she said.
"Alright, I'll take you home." Richard took off his coat, wrapped it around Betty, and held her as they got into the car.
Betty had been strong on her own for years, but now she had someone to rely on. She clung to Richard, not wanting to let go.
Richard sighed, kissed her head, and said, "If only we had met earlier. I wouldn't have let you suffer."
"I had a dream that day," Betty said, lying on Richard's lap with a weak smile. "I dreamed I went back to my childhood, transferred to your school, and when you were about to drop out, I threatened you not to."
"I even made you follow me, protect me, and if you didn't listen, I wouldn't give you food," Betty said softly.
"You treated me like Lucky?" Richard laughed.
Lucky was a stray cat they had picked up, a fluffy little yellow tomcat.
Betty named him Lucky and even took him to get neutered.
She said she had him neutered to prevent him from going out during mating season and messing around with female cats.
Richard suspected Betty did it deliberately to warn him.
"In the dream, you and Lucky merged into one." Betty chuckled.
"Neutered?" Richard raised an eyebrow and pinched Betty's cheek playfully.
Betty laughed and hugged Richard tightly. "No way. If you were neutered, what would I do?"
Richard rubbed Betty's head, making sure she calmed down before he sighed in relief. "Let's go home; the food's getting cold."
Betty opened her mouth but didn't ask.
She wanted to know how Richard would handle the situation with Aleah.
But Betty didn't ask. She preferred to see how Richard would handle it.
Back home, Betty's mood had calmed. She sat in a rocking chair, watching Richard reheat the food in the kitchen, feeling a bit lost.
In her dark and lonely life, meeting Richard felt like a dream, a stroke of luck.
At one point, consumed by revenge and clinging to everything she had, she lost all passion and enthusiasm for anyone or anything—until she met Richard.
Knowing he might still have feelings for someone else, she was still infatuated. She just wanted to have this man, even if it came at a great cost.
At least for now, she felt lucky.
"Dinner's ready," Richard said, coming over to carry Betty to the dining room.
Sometimes, Betty was like a child, and he had to coax her.
"Eat your meal and rest well at home. Don't go anywhere or run around. From now on, leave everything to me, okay?" Richard looked at Betty.
Except for matters related to Betty's company, he handled everything at home.
Betty thought for a moment and nodded.
During dinner, Richard received a call from Aleah.
The police had reopened the case and were holding Aleah accountable.
Aleah called Richard in tears, admitting her mistakes and begging for one last chance.
She asked him to consider their past relationship and the fact that Betty was unharmed, and let her go this time.
She didn't want to be detained.
Richard stayed silent until Aleah finished crying. "Aleah, we've given you many chances. Where you are today is your own doing. I can't forgive you."
The person she hurt was Betty.
And Richard knew Betty well; she wouldn't easily soften.
She might seem tough, but she was protecting herself.
"Richard, why are you doing this to me? We were in love for so many years," Aleah cried out desperately.
Richard had already hung up and called David. "Tell the lawyer to handle it as they see fit."
He wouldn't be soft-hearted anymore.
Betty was his wife, and he had to be biased.
Besides, he had given Aleah countless chances. If she had just left and stopped bothering them, he would have given her a large sum of money.
But clearly, Aleah wanted something else.
At the dining table, Betty paused while drinking water and looked up at Richard's back.
She smiled to herself and took a bite of her salad, feeling quite good.
Richard really did love her a lot.
"Richard, dinner's ready."
"Okay."
At LY Company, Jasmine sat at her desk, looking around. This was the office she shared with Samuel, and their team members were interns recommended by professors from Stanford University.
Even though they were just interns, Samuel was still very confident.
As the leader of Group B, Samuel believed he could smoothly secure their first project collaboration.
"Don't be overconfident," Jasmine reminded him softly. "It's not just the collaborators; there's also Deborah. I have a feeling she won't let us get the project easily. She'll definitely make a move against us."
Jasmine continued, "By the way, the collaborator is under FutureTech Innovations. FutureTech Innovations has a strategic partnership with the Hawthorne Group. Deborah holds shares in the Hawthorne Group, and even though it's not much, she's still part of the Hawthorne family."
Samuel nodded. "I've looked into all of this. Deborah won't act openly, but no one knows whether she'll interfere."
Samuel leaned back in his chair and looked at Jasmine. "We really are facing internal and external troubles."
"It's exciting. If everything were smooth, we wouldn't be able to showcase our abilities," Jasmine joked.
"Thanks a lot," Samuel glared at Jasmine.
With friends around, Jasmine had become much more cheerful.
"My friend is coming to report in the afternoon. She's here to help me, and she's very capable," Jasmine said, referring to Emily and Lily. Sophia had asked Lily to cozy up to Edward, so Jasmine decided to have Lily work at the company.
She needed more people anyway.
"Alright, can we trust her?" Samuel asked.
"Yes, we can." Jasmine nodded. "I won't hire anyone I don't trust."
"You have principles," Samuel said, picking up a latte from the door. It was for Jasmine, her favorite.
Jasmine was surprised. "How did you know I love this?"
"I know everything," Samuel said proudly.
Jasmine smiled and took a sip, only to see Ethan standing at the door with a gloomy expression, arms crossed, watching them.
