Chapter 489 Sophia Meet Betty
"I heard Evan broke his leg, and the delay in treatment might leave him disabled for life," Edward said, visiting Jasmine at school. He had been super busy, so it was rare for him to have free time.
"Can he recover?" Jasmine asked, shocked, her fingers tightening.
Even though she used to hate Evan, hearing about his misfortune made her sad. After all, Evan had cared for her for twenty-one years.
"It's hard to say. Even if his leg heals, he'll be permanently disabled," Edward replied. Sports were out of the question for Evan now.
Jasmine glanced at Edward, nervously changing the subject. "How are things with Lily? Has Sophia asked her to do anything?"
"Sophia's been unusually quiet. I don't know what she's up to, but she's still having Lily cling to me. It might take some time," Edward said, unsure of Sophia's plans.
"She won't give up, so stay alert," Jasmine reminded him.
"Okay." Edward nodded.
"Did you come just to see me today?" Jasmine asked, realizing Edward hadn't told her in advance. He usually gave her a heads-up.
Edward coughed and smiled. "I dropped Lily off at her dorm."
Jasmine nodded. "That's good."
"If there's nothing else, I'll head out." Edward checked the time, handed Jasmine some pastries, and left.
Jasmine stood by the roadside, waving at Edward. She noticed another cake on the back seat of his car. Who was it for? Lily? That didn't seem right; he had just dropped her off. For himself? Edward didn't like sweets.
Sophia had arranged to meet Betty at Morning Bliss Coffee, which Betty hadn't expected. It was one thing for Sophia to pester Richard, but now she was bothering her too. Braden and Aleah Moore had already caused her a lot of trouble, Sophia was added to the mix.
Betty agreed to meet Sophia to find out her intentions.
"You're early," Betty said, entering the coffee shop and seeing Sophia sitting there elegantly.
Sophia, noticing Betty's lack of courtesy, looked her up and down with displeasure. "Are you Betty?" she asked indifferently.
"Yes, I am." Betty sat across from Sophia. "What do you want? I only have thirty minutes; time is precious."
"You married my son without my consent, and I don't approve," Sophia said, taking on a parental tone.
"What?" Betty laughed. "Who is your son?"
"Richard is my son. Due to various reasons, I had to leave him and entrusted him to his aunt May," Sophia said calmly, as if she had done nothing wrong.
Betty looked at Sophia in shock, not because of her words but because of her audacity. She took a sip of coffee and then spat it out, spraying it all over Sophia's face.
Sophia was furious.
Betty was almost in tears from laughing. "Sophia, you must be delusional. I don't care who you are; you have no right to interfere in my and Richard's affairs. I don't need your approval to get married."
Betty's smile vanished, and she glared at Sophia. "I don't care who Richard's biological mother is. To me, he's an orphan with no parents, just a wife—me—and a sister, Jasmine. Got it?"
She stood up and warned Sophia bluntly, "Don't bother Richard or me again. I'm not like those people you think I am. I will retaliate."
Sophia's fingers trembled with anger. This woman infuriated her. In all her life, she had never met someone like Betty—so uncouth and unrefined! How could Richard possibly like such a woman?
"Look at her! She doesn't deserve my son!" Sophia fumed, slamming the table.
Dakota approached and whispered, "I heard Richard was forced to marry her because he had no money and was working as her bodyguard."
Rumors had it that Richard, for money, had slept with his boss as a penniless bodyguard. The gossip about Richard and Betty was not flattering.
Sophia sneered. "These blind fools. My son could never be a penniless nobody."
"Here's the information. This woman is Aleah Moore, Richard's first love. They were in love for many years, but she left him to go abroad. Now, she's back because she's hit rock bottom."
"She's an opportunist. Such a woman is also unworthy of my son," Sophia said, despite being that kind of woman herself. Aleah's actions mirrored her own too closely, making her dislike Aleah even more.
"But she's obedient," Dakota said meaningfully.
Sophia raised an eyebrow, scrutinizing Aleah's photo. Yes, this woman would definitely be more compliant than that crazy Betty.
Back at Betty's place, she had been feeling uneasy since meeting Sophia.
"What's wrong?" Richard asked as he returned home, seeing Betty's gloomy face. He washed his hands and headed to cook for her.
"I hate her!" Betty snapped angrily.
Richard was puzzled, not knowing who had upset Betty this time.
Seeing that Richard wasn't comforting her, Betty got a bit sulky. She jumped off the couch, ran over, and clung to Richard's back, wrapping her legs around his waist. Fortunately, Richard was sturdy; a weaker person wouldn't have been able to handle her impact.
Richard smiled helplessly and nuzzled Betty's head. "Who made you unhappy? Tell me, and I'll go beat them up."
"Sophia met with me today," Betty said gloomily. "She said I'm not good enough for you and doesn't approve of our marriage. She has no right."
Betty believed that people shouldn't be too polite; they should speak their minds when necessary.
Richard frowned, his face darkening. "She came to the office to see me today, too. She used to avoid me and May's family, so I don't know what she's up to."
Betty was also puzzled. "That's what worries me. She isn't the sentimental type."
What was Sophia up to? Did she suddenly want to reclaim her son and have Richard take care of her in her old age? Impossible! The money she swindled from William was enough for her to live comfortably.
"If she contacts you again, call me. I'll handle it," Richard said as he fried eggs, skillfully preparing the meal.
"Richard, I'm angry. I don't want the egg; I want you first," Betty said, biting Richard's ear.
