Chapter 697 Owen Is Not the Mastermind

On the way home, Connor was distracted.

He knew Owen wouldn't let it go.

Out of fear, Connor didn't even dare to turn on his phone and had it on silent.

When he got home, Tom was cooking. Seeing Connor return, he called out, "Why are you back so late? Are you going to eat? If not, I'll eat by myself."

Connor was stunned for a moment and looked up at Tom. "I'll eat."

Tom had a bandage on his forehead and an injured leg, but he seemed quite happy.

Connor thought Tom would at least have some post-traumatic stress, but it seemed like psychological issues were immune to Tom.

He almost got killed today, yet he was still happily cooking.

Connor couldn't understand people like Tom; in fact, he was more envious of him.

"Are you just going to stand there and wait to eat? Come here to help me?" Tom suddenly asked, with a hint of nervousness, seeing Connor about to check his phone.

Connor put down his phone and actually obediently went over to help.

Tom breathed a sigh of relief and kept Connor busy with chores.

Today, Connor was exceptionally obedient, doing whatever Tom said.

Tom was a bit surprised. Was it because he saved him, and now Connor was repaying the favor?

Connor didn't complain about Tom today; he tolerated everything.

After cooking, the two of them ate.

"What's with that look? Was today's negotiation unsuccessful?" Tom asked.

With Tom around, Connor didn't feel as lonely in the house.

"It was successful. Your Jasmine won't be pressured by Owen anymore, and the Douglas Group is temporarily safe," Connor said flatly.

Tom looked terrified. "Don't say such things, especially in front of Ethan. Don't say anything reckless."

Tom amused Connor.

The phone rang and kept vibrating.

Tom heard it and instinctively started talking to Connor to prevent him from checking the phone.

Connor had already figured out Tom's intention. He just smiled and pretended not to hear the phone ringing.

After dinner, Connor went to take a shower.

Tom tiptoed and stole Connor's phone, turned it off, and then went aside to make a call. "Can you guys handle it or not? Get those trending topics suppressed."

"Can't you even handle this?"

When Connor came out of the bathroom, Tom was still cursing in the corner.

Connor smiled helplessly, leaned against the headboard, and wanted to check his phone but then put it down.

It was meaningless.

He had offended Owen today, and Owen would definitely try to ruin him.

After hanging up the phone, Tom ran to Connor's room with his pillow. "I'm scared to sleep alone; I had a nightmare."

Connor thought Tom was a terrible liar. If he was scared, it should be of ghosts.

Was he really scared?

"Let me squeeze in; we're bro," Tom said as he climbed into Connor's bed.

Connor was a clean freak. How could he allow someone to sleep in his bed, especially a man?

Especially a man he found very annoying.

"Tom, can you guess why I've never had any scandals with women?" Connor squinted his eyes, deliberately trying to scare Tom.

Tom, hugging his pillow, shook his head in confusion. "Because you have high moral standards?"

"Because I like men," Connor said with a mischievous smile, deliberately.

Tom immediately sat up, hugging his pillow, feeling his chastity was at risk.

He wanted to get up and leave but was afraid Connor would see the things about him online and get upset.

Gritting his teeth, Tom said, "I'll sacrifice myself; let me sleep here."

Connor really wanted to open Tom's head to see what was inside.

"Tom, you don't have to watch over me so deliberately. Ethan contacted you, right? How much did he pay you to make you willing to sacrifice yourself?" Connor was amused.

Tom replied guiltily, "That's none of your business."

Actually, Tom didn't ask for any benefits this time.

Connor didn't bother with Tom anymore. He placed a pillow between them. "Don't cross the line while sleeping, snore, and make any noise. Or I'll kill you."

Tom was really scared.

He felt Connor wasn't joking but would actually kill him.

At home, Jasmine called Ben from the sofa. "Are those things online not completely removed yet?"

"We've already reported it to the police for disclosing the victim's privacy. Most of it is inaccessible now. The authorities will clean it up better than we can."

Jasmine relaxed. "That's good."

Biting her finger, Jasmine spoke again, "I didn't expect him to have gone through all that."

Owen was a pervert; he wouldn't have spared young Connor.

Connor was well-behaved back then, but his later coldness likely stemmed from these experiences. He stopped trusting anyone and kept his distance from everyone, except Ethan probably.

Leaning on the sofa, Jasmine's gaze became distant.

She remembered the first time she attempted suicide in prison; Connor told her, "You're not the only one trapped in darkness, but choosing to end it is the weakest act."

Connor was teaching her to fight back, always trying hard to teach her how to resist and how to be strong.

He must have gone through it the same way, with even more desperate experiences.

How old was he then? Just a young, well-behaved teenager.

There was always a lot of darkness in the world, and people would get swallowed by it and desperately try to climb out.

Some climbed out survived; some were swallowed by the darkness.

Jasmine had tried countless times to climb out, only to be pulled back into the abyss by the darkness countless times.

Until she met Ethan.

In the darkness, she saw a light— Ethan's outstretched hand.

So, she wasn't alone.

She should have been strong long ago.

Love can heal everything and smooth all wounds.

The next day, Jasmine arrived at the Douglas Group.

Owen was in jail, and the Hawthorne Group's attack on the Douglas Group had temporarily stopped.

But the problem was that, with Owen in jail, the crisis for the Douglas Group's crisis wasn't completely resolved.

Jasmine could tell that Owen wasn't the real mastermind behind the scenes; he was just a tool being used.

The person behind it had a clear goal: to target the Douglas Group.

But it seemed like they didn't want the Douglas Group to be completely destroyed.

What exactly did that person want?

"Ms. Cunningham, Daniel is out. Some board members are proposing to let him return to the company." The company was in its most critical moment, and with Daniel out, he was bound to return to the company.
