Chapter 437 Avery and Betty Were Alike
Avery sneered. "His ex-wife, Maya Hernandez, is my good friend."
Edgar looked at Avery and swallowed.
"When she was thirteen, Maya immigrated to Country M with her parents. Although we rarely saw each other, we kept in touch every day. Five years ago, she told me she got married, arranged by her family." Avery's voice carried sadness.
"Three years ago, Maya suddenly called me. She cried, saying she wanted a divorce."
Avery looked down at the man on the ground, his face covered in blood.
"She said her husband was abusive, and if she stayed, she would die."
"She filed for divorce, but it was rejected. A year ago, she said she finally got free and received the divorce certificate, but because they had a child, they still met."
"Half a year ago, Maya went missing. I couldn't reach her."
"I asked my friends in Country M to help investigate, and I found out that Maya was abused by Dennis, beaten to the point of being unable to take care of herself. She's still in the hospital. She suffered severe harm both physically and mentally."
Avery frowned and spoke again. "When I went to see her, she had already gone mad."
Because Maya went mad and had mental issues, Dennis ultimately escaped legal punishment.
In the past six months, Avery had her aunt contact this man, luring him back to the country under the pretense of marriage, all for today.
"I didn't see anything." Edgar raised his hands. "I saw nothing. I only saw him trying to hurt you. You acted in self-defense."
Several waitresses also nodded. "We all witnessed it. He tried to assault you. You acted in self-defense."
Avery smiled and called the police.
In fact, she was sure that this man wouldn't pursue the matter because he feared provoking the Hawthorne family and embarrassing himself.
Most likely, this matter would end here.
"Let's go." Avery signaled Edgar to leave before the police arrived to avoid trouble.
"Can you handle this alone?" Edgar didn't leave.
"He wouldn't dare offend my family." Avery was sure.
Edgar thought for a moment and then took Avery's phone to call his own number. "Let's save each other's numbers. If you can't handle it, call me, and I'll help you."
Avery raised an eyebrow. "You're quite righteous."
"Consider it compensation for bumping into you." Edgar stood up and checked the time. It was time to pick up Jasmine for barbecue.
Avery looked at Edgar's phone, lost in thought.
Jasmine was already waiting downstairs for Edgar.
"Edgar! Over here." Jasmine called out to Edgar.
Edgar waved.
"Where did you go?" Jasmine asked.
"I went to watch some drama." Edgar replied with a smile.
"Was it good?" Jasmine was a bit puzzled.
"Very good." Edgar's smile deepened. "Absolutely thrilling."
"What is it?" Jasmine was curious.
"A woman stood up for her good friend, beating up an abusive man." Edgar laughed.
Jasmine laughed too. "That's great."
Edgar drove and glanced at Jasmine. He remarked, "I don't understand why so many men like to hit women."
"Because they can't beat men, so they find a sense of existence in hitting women." Jasmine shrugged. "You're right, such men deserve to die."
Edgar gripped the steering wheel tightly, looking worried. "Jasmine, don't be afraid. If Ethan dares to hit you, I'll go down with him."
Jasmine burst into laughter, clutching her stomach. "Edgar, you're overthinking it."
Far away at home, Ethan sneezed.
Since Jasmine was taken back by the Cunningham family, Nolan took her on Mondays and Tuesdays, Edward on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Edgar on Fridays and Saturdays. That left only Sunday, which she had to spend with three kids.
The most pitiful part was that his wife, now with a new identity, hadn't mentioned getting remarried.
He was quite worried.
The phone rang, and Ethan glanced at it.
It was Connor.
"Connor, you better have a good reason for calling me," Ethan said, somewhat annoyed.
"There's something..." Connor's voice was hoarse, clearly not right. "I..."
Ethan suddenly stood up. "Are you in trouble?"
"Yes, a car accident. Someone deliberately retaliated against me." There was noise and loud banging on Connor's end of the line.
"Call the police, you idiot!" Ethan cursed. He grabbed his coat and ran out hurriedly.
Connor was being retaliated against.
Who could it be?
Annabelle probably wouldn't have the guts.
In the Barbecue Restaurant.
Edgar and Jasmine had just sat down, someone in the shadows started watching them.
That person made a secret phone call. "I see them. Edgar and Jasmine are having barbecue."
The person on the other end said something, and the caller pulled down their hat brim, signaling a group of people in the shadows to join them at the barbecue restaurant.
Edgar and Jasmine came alone, probably thinking the area was very safe, especially with the police station right across the street.
But they underestimated Sophia's level of madness.
For Sophia, Cordelia giving shares to her three sons and Jasmine meant that Willian lost his value.
But fortunately, Edgar, Edward, and Nolan were not married. As long as they died, the shares would still go back to Willian.
So, Sophia had already started to go mad. Especially after being provoked by Arnold, she became even more unhinged.
"Jasmine, have a try. It's very fresh." Edgar offered Jasmine some meat.
Jasmine nodded, looking around. "Edgar, do you feel like someone is watching us?"
Edgar deliberately dropped a cup and looked down. Then he noticed that several people at the nearby table were staring at them.
Edgar signaled Jasmine to continue eating without showing any reaction.
With the police station right across the street, there was no need to worry about anything serious happening.
Seeing Edgar take out his phone, a few people stood up warily, ready to use towels to knock out Edgar and Jasmine and take them away.
Edgar stood up and kicked one of them, protecting Jasmine as they retreated.
Even with the police station across the street, the group of people was confident they could take them away.
A van pulled up, and a few people started dragging Jasmine towards it.
Edgar kicked one of them away, his eyes fierce as he saw them touch Jasmine.
Avery had just come out of the police station and saw Edgar fighting with people at the barbecue restaurant.
"Mr. Cox, there's a fight over there," Avery pointed out.
Mr. Cox, who was escorting Avery, was stunned.
This was right in front of the police station. "What are you doing!" He shouted and rushed over with his colleagues.
Edgar was still beating the people on the ground, his eyes bloodshot. "You dare touch Jasmine? You're asking for death."
Jasmine curled up on the ground and hugged herself tightly, trying not to cause trouble for Edgar.
Seeing the police arrive, the leader grabbed a bottle and smashed it towards Edgar.
Jasmine rushed to stop him but failed.
Then she saw a woman in a black gauze dress, covered in tattoos, rush over and kick the man onto the street.
Jasmine's mouth dropped open in shock.
This scene seemed familiar.
This woman looked a lot like Betty.
