Chapter 625 Lawrence Passed Away

Amelia shut her eyes, feeling totally defeated. "I get it," she muttered.

After she hung up, tears splashed onto her phone screen.

She was completely lost.

Her family felt like a never-ending black hole.

"Something wrong?" Elijah asked.

Amelia took a deep breath and decided to call Nolan.

The kid was his, so she figured she’d ask Nolan for $100,000 and call it even.

The phone rang forever before a woman picked up, "Hello?"

Amelia's fingers froze, and she quickly hung up, panicking.

She didn’t even know why she was scared.

It was only 7:40 AM, and a woman answered Nolan's phone. Anyone could guess they spent the night together.

Tears streamed down as Amelia called her old friends, hoping to borrow money.

But those friends from back then? Who would help her now?

She even tried Nathaniel, but his phone was with his assistant, and he wouldn’t get back to her until late.

Amelia checked with the detention center and the hospital. The specialist consultation and surgery would take time, and missing the specialist wasn’t an option.

"Can you help me get in touch with Nolan? Please, I’m begging you, help me borrow $100,000 from him," Amelia pleaded with Elijah, out of options.

Elijah looked conflicted. "Amelia, after what your dad did, if you want to borrow money to save him, Mr. Cunningham definitely won’t agree."

Nolan would never help Lawrence.

Amelia lowered her eyes in despair, trying to get out of bed.

But as soon as she moved, pain shot through her whole body.

Elijah said, "You can’t get out of bed."

"No, I have to go borrow money," Amelia croaked.

"Alright, alright. I’ll help you borrow it. Don’t move. I’ll call him right now," Elijah gave in.

Amelia nodded through her tears, waiting for Elijah to call Nolan.

Nolan was her last hope.

She knew her family didn’t deserve anyone’s sympathy, but that was her dad. No matter how bad he was, she couldn’t just watch him die.

She had to try.

Elijah got through on the phone. "Sir, Miss Carter’s father had an emergency in prison and is now on medical parole. He needs $100,000 for surgery, and she wants to borrow it from you."

Before Elijah could finish, Nolan hung up.

Lend money to Lawrence for treatment? What was she thinking?

Elijah felt awkward, glancing at Amelia, who was listening from the hospital bed.

Amelia gripped the blanket tightly, her head bowed as tears streamed down.

"I’m sorry," Elijah said, looking down. "I have some savings, but only $30,000. I’ll lend it to you, but don’t tell him. If he finds out..."

Amelia closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Thank you."

In that moment of utter humiliation, Amelia felt like she had grown up.

Sitting on the hospital bed, Amelia spent the entire morning making calls, begging many people, feeling humble and helpless, choking up, and crying.

She even called that jerk Louis to borrow money.

Louis said, "Amelia, you want to borrow money from me? Sure, come over to my place and sleep with me once, and I’ll give you the money. No need to pay it back!"

After hanging up, Amelia could hardly breathe.

She had brought this humiliation upon herself.

By noon, Amelia finally scraped together enough money. While Elijah and the doctors were away, she got dressed and snuck out.

At a specialized hospital in San Francisco, Amelia's face was pale, and every step was agony.

Amelia said, "Hi, I'm Lawrence's family. I'm here to pay for the surgery."

The nurse checked and looked at Amelia, surprised.

The the nurse said, "Lawrence's family? The detention center should have already notified you. Your mom and brother are already..."

Before the nurse could finish, Lucas rushed over. "Amelia, did you get the money? Where is it?"

Amelia looked at Lucas warily, clutching her bag. "Where's Dad?"

"Give me the money first," Lucas said, trying to grab her bag.

"Where's Dad?" Amelia shouted.

"Dad's already dead," Lucas said, shoving Amelia aside and snatching the money.

Amelia fell to the ground, blood staining her pants. The pain was unbearable.

"You jerk, you're not even human. Give me back the money!" Amelia cried, trying to get it back.

"Dad's dead. Don't we need money for the funeral? You only borrowed this little, and you have the nerve to cry," Lucas said disdainfully, running off with the money.

Amelia cried for a long time, looking at her mother standing in the hallway, and yelled, "Why are you so awful, so disgusting! I hate you!"

Caitlyn looked down guiltily, her eyes red. "Amelia, I'm sorry. Your dad is gone, and there's nothing valuable left at home."

"That $100,000, plus the money from selling the necklace, consider it buying out our mother-daughter relationship over the years," Amelia said weakly, her vision darkening. "From now on, we're no longer family. If we meet again, we're just strangers."

"Amelia, how can you be so heartless? Your dad just passed, and you're not helping," Caitlyn tried to say more, but Amelia had already struggled to her feet and walked away.

Even as Amelia left, Caitlyn didn't ask once why Amelia looked so pale or what surgery she had undergone.

With a bitter laugh, Amelia walked down the city streets, looking at the fallen leaves, her steps unsteady.

From the beginning, Amelia knew not all parents loved their children.

And not all parents deserved to be parents.

"Amelia, where are you?" Amelia received a call from Nathaniel as she fainted on the road. "Amelia?"

"Nathaniel," she choked out, listening to Nathaniel's panicked voice.

Was there anyone in this world who truly cared for her?

She couldn't tell what was real or fake anymore.

Lawrence was dead, a sudden heart attack. Tomorrow's headlines would probably say he got what he deserved, that he was punished.

But Amelia knew her father didn't deserve to die.

Even knowing that, what could she do?

Nolan wished him dead.

When she was young, Lawrence had doted on Amelia. As the family grew wealthier, Lawrence was home less and less.

Compared to Caitlyn's favoritism towards her brother, Lawrence's was much less severe.

No matter how much Nolan hated him, no matter how much the outside world criticized him, and no matter how harsh the online comments, to Amelia, he was still her father.

Now, he was dead, and it was all over.

The debt to Nolan and Fiona was paid off, right?

Let it end like this.

She was so tired.
