Chapter 504 People in a Pitiful State May Exhibit Hateful Traits
Elbert paused and said, "I'll tell Mr. Everhart to stay for dinner."
As a psychologist, he knew Evan's situation was risky. To help, he needed to understand him better.
He had to stay and watch Evan closely, comparing his actions with what others said.
"Do what you want," Evan replied, uninterested. No matter Elbert's intentions, Evan had made up his mind.
He didn't want to be a burden anymore.
Past mistakes couldn't be fixed. He couldn't escape his sins or nightmares.
If becoming disabled or dying could atone for what he did to Jasmine, he'd accept it.
But he knew even that wouldn't earn Jasmine's forgiveness.
She had once said, "Evan, I will never forgive you."
"Never" was a long time, even beyond death.
"Elbert, stay for dinner tonight," Alex said, entering the room.
Elbert, from the Long family, had business ties with the Everharts, so they weren't strangers.
"Okay, sir," Elbert replied, smiling as he pushed the wheelchair over. "Need help?"
Evan shot him a cold look. "Get out, I don't need your help."
Elbert just smiled. There was still some pride left in Evan.
He wasn't beyond help yet.
"I'm your rehab doctor, so I have to stay," Elbert insisted.
Evan's face reddened with anger, but he couldn't do anything. He slowly moved to the wheelchair.
"Your left leg is fine; try putting weight on it," Elbert reminded.
"I don't need you to tell me," Evan snapped.
"Once your right leg heals, you'll limp but won't be unable to walk. No need to be dramatic," Elbert said, provoking him.
"Get out!" Evan realized Elbert was doing it on purpose.
Elbert smiled but stayed put.
Evan gritted his teeth as he tried to sit in the wheelchair. The pain almost made him collapse.
Elbert grabbed him and lifted him into the wheelchair.
For someone like Evan, needing help was the ultimate humiliation.
"Get out!" Evan shouted, eyes red with anger.
His voice was hoarse, and his eyes were wet.
He didn't want this humiliation.
Just three months, only two months and a few days left. He could endure it.
Elbert watched him for a long time before speaking. "Mr. Everhart seems to care about you."
So, was there no one Evan cared about?
His mother treated him like a pawn, and his father only learned of him after twenty years.
His existence affected Evelina and Alex's happiness.
Everything started because of him.
The misfortune around him seemed to exist because of him.
Evan didn't speak, but Elbert understood. Evan felt like a burden, unwanted and unnecessary, driving him to seek escape.
"I'll take you out for a walk tonight; it'll help your recovery," Elbert said, pushing Evan out. "Evelina already paid. I'm your private doctor for now. If you don't agree, I won't refund the money, and Evelina will be upset."
Elbert tried to threaten Evan.
Evan frowned, gripping the wheelchair handles tightly. He didn't want to go out.
Going out now felt like slow torture, but he didn't want to upset Evelina.
"Suit yourself," he finally agreed.
Elbert smiled and pushed Evan to dinner.
"Uncle, Aunt, is there anything's missing at home? We'll hit the mall tonight," Elbert said, trying to give Evan a reason to go out.
Evelina caught on and smiled. "The kitchen's running low. Get some stuff you and Evan like, and I'll cook tomorrow."
With Evelina's suggestion, Evan couldn't refuse.
Elbert sat next to Evan, casually picking up a fork. Seeing Evan hadn't moved, he put some food in Evan's bowl.
Evan snorted but stayed silent.
Elbert was about to provoke Evan when his phone rang.
"Hello, this is Elbert."
"Elbert, it's Ethan."
Ethan was calling.
Ethan didn't want to be controlled by Connor, so he reached out to Elbert.
Elbert raised an eyebrow.
Ethan was mentally strong. If he needed a psychologist, it was likely for his wife, Jasmine.
"Mr. Douglas, go ahead," Elbert said, not leaving Evan's side.
Before taking on Evan, he had learned about their conflicts. Evelina had filled him in.
"When can we meet? Let's talk in person," Ethan said.
"Okay, Mr. Douglas. How about ten tomorrow morning at the hospital?"
"Alright," Ethan agreed and hung up.
Elbert smiled at Evan. "The hospital's busy. I can't do rehab with you tomorrow morning."
Evan had been listening closely since he heard Ethan's voice. He was nervous, worried something had happened to Jasmine. "Will you come in the afternoon?"
"Do you really want me to?" Elbert teased.
Evan frowned. He didn't care if Elbert came, but he was worried about Jasmine.
Elbert smiled. "Uncle, Aunt, can I come for lunch tomorrow?"
Alex, pleased to see his son talking, nodded. "You're always welcome."
Evelina smiled too. "Come on, if you don't, I won't have anyone to cook for."
Evelina liked having more people around.
Evan kept a gloomy face. Even when Elbert pushed him out, he was still grim. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. We're just cooperating. You make your money, but keep it quiet."
Evan warned Elbert.
"That's not possible. The supermarket will be noisy," Elbert said, opening the car door.
Evan gritted his teeth in anger.
Elbert reached out. "Should I carry you?"
"Get lost!"
He'd rather die than let Elbert carry him into the car!
At Capital Hospital, Annabelle had woken up, her face pale, smashing everything on the table. "Zelda! She should die."
The Harper couple was dead, and Annabelle had lost all her support.
"Don't worry, Zelda won't hide for long," Sophia said, peeling an orange. "Right now, you're dispensable to the Douglas family. If you have no value, they'll drop you."
Annabelle trembled. "Aren't we bound by mutual interests?"
Sophia smiled. "Of course, so just help me, and I'll help you regain your glory."
Annabelle frowned. "What do you want to do?"
