Chapter 481 Evan Is Indeed Alex's Son
She took the paternity test results, and Evelina went quiet.
After a moment, she handed them to Alex.
Alex was flustered and uneasy. He hesitated to open it, feeling scared.
When he first thought Evan might be his son, he was excited.
But now, he realized that if Evan wasn't his son, he and Evelina might still have a chance.
If Evan was his son, Evelina, being so independent, wouldn't settle for less.
She was always strong and proud, never compromising her values.
"Open it," Evelina said with a hoarse voice, smiling.
Alex hesitated. "Forget it."
He decided not to look.
"Even if he is, Evan won't acknowledge me. That's our deal. He doesn't want to come between us," Alex said, looking at Evelina. "So it's better not to open it."
"Do you know Schrödinger's cat? When you don't open the box, you keep wondering if the cat is alive or dead," Evelina said.
Better to know than to always wonder.
"So what do we do?" Alex was scared.
He didn't want to lose Evelina.
He realized she was the most important person to him.
"That depends on the paternity test results," Evelina said.
If Evan wasn't his son, she might give Alex another chance.
But if he was, for their father-son relationship, she would leave.
It wasn't that she didn't love him; the situation made it hard to continue.
She didn't want to compromise her happiness anymore.
A financially independent woman can make choices that benefit herself without regret.
"Do you know? I often dreamed Evan was my son. If only Karen had been worse, like Sophia, and swapped my child. But I know that's impossible. My child was stillborn," Evelina said, smiling weakly.
But this dream would end; Evan wasn't her son.
Alex was silent, his eyes red.
He regretted not protecting Evelina and their child.
If that child had lived, things might be different.
Seeing Alex wouldn't open the results, Evelina took them.
She opened them for him.
The results showed Evan was indeed Alex's son.
"Congratulations," Evelina said, looking relieved.
Alex closed his eyes, covering his forehead with trembling fingers.
He didn't want things to end this way with Evelina.
"Give me three months, just until Evan is discharged, okay?" Alex asked, knowing Evelina wouldn't stay with him.
"Okay," Evelina agreed. "I can help take care of Evan."
She had her reasons. She wanted to pretend Evan was her son for three months, to experience motherhood.
Alex's eyes burned with pain; he still didn't dare to open them.
He wanted to hold on, but he knew Evelina's heart was tied in knots. Without resolving it, she would be exhausted.
He couldn't bear to see her so tired.
"Can I still take care of you in the future?" Alex asked, choking up.
"That's still up in the air; I haven't thought about it yet," Evelina said, taking a deep breath and leaning back on the bench.
She didn't regret her time with Alex.
In her memories, Alex was there for their first meeting, first home, first venture, first stumble, and that first run through the rain.
"I promise I won't disappoint you, Evelina," he had pledged.
"In this lifetime, I promise, Evelina, never to betray your trust, to cherish our beginning," he had avowed.
"Evelina, you are my deliverance," he had professed.
"You brought me from nothing to everything," he had declared.
"Evelina, in you, I find my entirety," he had whispered, sealing their bond.
A sound came from the hospital room, followed by Evan's painful groan.
His bones had undergone surgery, and the postoperative pain was intense.
His leg had to be immobilized, making it hard to alleviate the pain.
"Don't move. Your bones were almost necrotized. If it weren't for your dad and me insisting, you would have been amputated," Evelina said, quickly walking into the room to comfort Evan. "Are you in a lot of pain?"
Evan's face was pale, and he looked at Evelina with reddened eyes, unable to speak.
He was suffering but didn't know who to tell.
His mother didn't care about him, but the woman he should hate the most was standing by his bed, anxiously concerned.
"Painkillers can't be taken too often. If the pain is unbearable, we'll take one," Evelina said gently. After all, this was Alex's son.
Watching Evelina pour water and get medicine, Evan turned his gaze to the window.
"She had threatened me with Jasmine." Evan no longer referred to Karen as his mother; he thought she was unhinged.
Before the surgery, Evelina had asked why he didn't seek help, letting his bones necrotize and his wounds fester.
Finally, Evan opened up to Evelina and explained.
Evelina's hand holding the water cup froze for a moment. "Don't worry about Jasmine; I'll handle it. Take your medicine."
Evan clutched the blanket tightly, choking up. "I won't interfere in your marriage, nor will I take anything from the Everhart family. That's yours, so don't leave Alex. Alex only has you."
Evelina looked at Evan; his voice was choked, but his eyes were firm.
"You don't need to worry about these matters. Focus on healing and do your rehab well. I promised your dad I would stay with you and take care of you for these three months," Evelina said, smiling. "If you hate me and don't want to see me, I can leave."
"No," Evan said urgently. "Don't go."
Evelina was surprised; it seemed he didn't hate her.
"Take your medicine and rest well. What do you want to eat tonight? I'll cook it myself," Evelina asked gently, sitting by the bed.
She wanted to be a gentle mother.
Evan's eyes burned as he looked at Evelina, and after a long time, he hoarsely said, "Can I have spaghetti?"
Evelina was surprised. "You actually have the same taste as me; I like spaghetti, too!"
Evan smiled, but tears welled up in his eyes.
If Evelina were his mother, his life would be very happy.
At least it wouldn't be like now, where he regretted his past and had no hope for the future.
"Wait for me," Evelina said, standing up and instinctively patting Evan's head. Realizing it, her fingers stiffened. "If you don't mind, be my son for three months. I want to experience what it's like to be a mother."
Evan clutched the blanket tightly, nodding with reddened eyes. "Can I?"
"Talk to your dad. I'll go home and cook for you both."
