Chapter 938 Ethan Trapped in Drama's Crossfire
Outside, Cordelia stopped in her tracks, sensing something wrong. She returned to the room and coldly eyed the young nurse.
Amelia, meanwhile, was famished. The contractions had prevented her from keeping any food down, and now that she finally had some strength, she was focused solely on eating and hadn't clearly heard what the nurse said.
"What did you say?" Amelia asked through a mouthful of pastry.
The nurse's face paled. She lowered her head and tried to leave, but Cordelia's security blocked her exit.
"What's going on?" Amelia asked, confused. "Mom, what's with her?"
Cordelia smiled reassuringly. "Nothing, dear. The doctors are just discussing whether to do a peritoneal or standard C-section. They'll come discuss it with you soon. I'll support whatever you choose."
Amelia nodded. "I'll go with whatever the doctor recommends."
Cordelia gently stroked Amelia's head, then stepped outside with the nurse. Her expression turned icy. "Who sent you?"
The young woman trembled visibly. "I... someone paid me to say those words. I don't even know what they meant."
"Don't be afraid. Just tell me who hired you," Cordelia said, her quiet tone carrying unmistakable authority.
"A man. He gave me fifty thousand dollars," the woman stammered. "I just... borrowed a nurse's uniform to deliver the message."
"Take her to the police station. Find this man," Cordelia ordered.
"Yes, ma'am."
Amelia's luck was that she'd been too hungry to pay attention, her mind completely focused on food. Besides, she couldn't imagine anything happening to Nolan. After all, he'd been comforting her on the phone just last night. She assumed he'd be there when she woke up after the surgery.
By the time Amelia successfully delivered their twins, the Cunningham family was in crisis. With all the Cunningham men in Moscow, Jasmine was the only one left running the company.
Beck clearly didn't consider her a threat and began his offensive against the Cunningham family.
At the project bidding conference in the exhibition center, everyone had gathered. The project was substantial—whoever secured it would dominate Silverlight City's future commercial development.
"Jasmine, is the Cunningham family so short-staffed they sent you?" Lily remarked, arriving with the Powell Corporation team.
Jasmine smirked. "Are all the Powell men extinct that they're letting an outsider represent the family?"
The Powell representatives' expressions soured, but they remained silent.
Jasmine ignored Lily and took her seat, only to find the organizers had placed her next to Lily.
Leaning closer, Lily whispered, "I hear the Cunningham family is in trouble. Something about contraband found at your docks?"
With the dock situation unresolved and now Nolan missing, the Cunningham family was indeed in crisis. To Lily, Jasmine appeared to be barely holding things together.
"I heard you had your own incident," Jasmine countered. "Almost assaulted by Beck in that hotel suite? You seem remarkably unfazed. Is this routine for you, or were you setting him up?"
Lily's expression darkened. "In business, Jasmine, it's about capability, not background. The strongest survive—and who that will be remains to be seen."
"I don't know who'll win in the end," Jasmine replied coldly, "but it certainly won't be a ruthless woman like you. In your midnight dreams, do you hear crying? Emily's sobs? Xavier screaming in the flames?"
Lily blanched, her hands clenched tightly.
"They say those who die tragically become vengeful spirits," Jasmine added. "They come back for retribution."
"Jasmine!" Lily snapped, clearly rattled.
"Lily, people face consequences for their actions."
Lily fell silent, watching the project presentation on stage. Neither woman would yield, creating a palpable tension between them.
As the meeting concluded, Jasmine rose to leave first.
"I hear Nolan's precious wife just had her baby at the hospital," Lily called after her. "Shall we visit? Imagine if she learned about Nolan's situation—that could be tragic for both mother and child."
Jasmine whirled around and slapped Lily hard across the face.
Immediately, reporters swarmed around them.
Lily smiled provocatively. She had deliberately provoked Jasmine, knowing she would react physically with so many media witnesses present.
"How could you resort to violence, Jasmine?" Lily played the victim. "We're industry colleagues in fair competition. The Cunningham family can't just rely on their black market connections to—"
She was deliberately mentioning the Cunningham Group's alleged criminal ties in front of the media, pushing them back into controversy while they were vulnerable. She wanted to destroy what Jasmine valued most, to drag her back down to the same level.
"You tried to seduce my husband—of course I slapped you," Jasmine declared loudly. "As CEO of Powell Corporation, you behave shamelessly, not just pursuing my husband but carrying on with both the CEO of Murray Group and his son. Are you a professional homewrecker?"
Lily stared at Jasmine in shock, her hand on her cheek. How could Jasmine lie so convincingly?
"Ms. Taylor, did you really try to seduce Mr. Douglas?" a reporter called out.
"Ms. Taylor, are you interfering in someone else's marriage?"
The media always preferred scandal to business disputes. Jasmine knew Lily's tactics—she'd been in the headlines herself after the incident with Beck at the police station. Now, with accusations about Ethan, Lily couldn't easily defend herself.
"Ms. Taylor, was your hotel incident with Beck Murray consensual as well?" another reporter asked.
"Don't listen to her lies! I never—" Lily panicked. "Why would I pursue Ethan? Does she think he's that special?"
"Mr. Douglas is indeed exceptional," a reporter commented, interpreting her denial as embarrassment.
Jasmine smiled coldly, having turned Lily's own tactics against her. She departed with commanding presence, leaving behind the chaos.
In this drama, only Ethan was caught in the crossfire. Hopefully, when Ethan in Moscow discovered he'd been unwittingly dragged into this mess, he wouldn't be too angry.
