Chapter 664 Jasmine Wants to Drag Everyone Down with Her
Jasmine and Ben had just entered the Douglas Group office when Liam rushed in.
"Something's happened. The board members are all here. There's been a safety accident at the Lisbun development project. Three people are dead, and fifteen are injured."
Jasmine's face changed, and the sudden shock caused a sharp pain in her stomach.
"What happened?" Jasmine asked, clutching her stomach.
Ben quickly supported Jasmine and helped her to the sofa. "Don't worry. I'll handle it."
"It was due to lax safety supervision. The elevator malfunctioned, causing the workers inside to die," Liam said quietly. "The media is already blowing it up, and the families are causing a scene at the site."
Jasmine rubbed her temples. "Get the PR department to come see me."
"The board wants you to come forward and calm the families," Liam said angrily. "They didn't acknowledge you taking over the Douglas Group before. But now that something's happened, they want you to take the fall."
Jasmine clenched her fists. "If this accident was deliberately orchestrated, then it's truly despicable!"
Outside the Douglas Group, a crowd of reporters and onlookers had gathered.
"Where's the president of the Douglas Group? Come out! People have died Why aren't you showing your face?"
"The Douglas Group is playing with people's lives! They are playing with people's lives!"
The noise outside was intense.
Jasmine sat in her office, able to hear the commotion downstairs.
These people were clearly here to disrupt the normal operations of the Douglas Group.
"Mr. Cunningham, what should we do? The board members want to see you." An employee knocked on the door, sounding urgent.
Ben glanced at Liam. "Mr. Cunningham, what now?"
Jasmine sat in her chair, silently closing her eyes.
Three lives were lost. These people were truly insane.
"Mr. Cunningham, the board members are all demanding to see you." Outside, people were getting anxious, knocking on the door.
"Jasmine, come out. Something's happened! Why are you hiding?"
Outside, several board members were shouting.
Ben frowned, wanting to go out.
"Ignore them. Let them shout." Jasmine opened her eyes and sat up straight. "If someone dares to play with lives, they won't be afraid of them getting anxious."
Ben nodded and sat on the sofa with Liam.
"Tom is outside; they can't get in." Liam reassured Jasmine.
Jasmine nodded and checked the time. "Are the injured workers taken care of?"
Liam nodded. "The families are causing a scene downstairs, but we've informed the hospital."
Jasmine sighed. As long as she had a clear conscience, that was enough.
"Have the police been involved?" Jasmine asked again, checking the time. "How is the scene being protected?"
"I secured the scene immediately. The workers called the police, but the engineering department has been trying to suppress it, wanting the police to classify it as a safety accident." Liam guessed. This matter wasn't simple.
"The people downstairs have been causing a scene for almost an hour, right?" Jasmine checked her watch. "We can call the police now. We'll report that we have evidence proving this wasn't a simple safety accident but a murder."
Liam and Ben were stunned, looking at Jasmine in shock. "Do we have evidence?"
Jasmine stood up. "It's the police's job to find the evidence."
Opening the office door, Jasmine looked back at them. "They want to create a media frenzy; we need to create an even bigger one. This isn't a safety accident; it's murder."
Jasmine called it murder because she firmly believed someone was framing the Douglas Group. She also needed to give the deceased an explanation.
She couldn't let these innocent people be dragged into this and become tools for others to profit from.
These were three lives!
"Jasmine! There's been a major safety accident in the project, and you're hiding? What does that mean?" Outside, a senior executive jumped up to accuse Jasmine.
They were just bullies, thinking Jasmine was an easy target because she was a woman.
If Ethan were here, they wouldn't dare.
Jasmine looked at him coldly and spoke in a deep voice, "I'm already pregnant, my husband just had an accident, and my health is poor. In this situation, I'm still standing here to face this issue, showing my utmost sincerity."
When accused, she highlighted her own hardships.
Sniffling, Jasmine looked at everyone with red eyes. "The Douglas family has faced such upheaval. My father-in-law just passed away, my mother-in-law is in prison, and my husband's fate is still unknown. I'm just a woman."
The board members were stunned, clearly not expecting Jasmine to respond this way.
"The Douglas family treated you well, giving you with your current social status. Now that the Douglas family is in trouble, you're all bullying us. Can you live with your conscience?" Jasmine cried, questioning them.
Now, all the senior executives fell silent.
Continuing would be impolite and bullying.
"You are the acting president. You need to be strong and hold on." Someone stepped forward, trying to make Jasmine take the fall.
Now, they acknowledged her as the acting president.
"I'm grateful that everyone recognizes my position. As the acting president and interim chairman of the Douglas Group, I will represent everyone in explaining to society, the victims, and their families." Jasmine bowed to the board members.
The senior executives' faces changed, retreating.
Jasmine warned them that the media frenzy was too big. They would all rise and fall together. She represented everyone, the entire Douglas Group. Simply put: if she were going down, they were going down together. Everyone better behave and stop scheming behind her back.
"You shouldn't be overly distressed." Ben quickly stepped forward, supporting Jasmine.
"Your health is important. Let the other board members handle the reporters," Liam exaggeratedly said, rushing over.
Jasmine shook her head, crying. "How can I let everyone handle this? I must do it. I represent everyone."
"You're truly remarkable. I didn't expect a woman to be so responsible." Harold decided to side with Jasmine.
"Yes, at this critical moment, Mr. Cunningham is so responsible. I believe we will get through this."
Jasmine nodded and entered the elevator with Ben's support.
None of the board members dared to enter, not wanting to get involved.
In the elevator, Jasmine stood up straight, coldly wiping away her tears.
"Impressive, no wonder you were a dancer," Liam whispered.
Jasmine said nothing, coldly walking out of the elevator.
These people wanted her to take the fall so that she would drag everyone down with her.
Did they think she was still as easy to bully as before? Kindness was taken for weakness. Over the years, Jasmine had learned that if people didn't mess with her, she wouldn't mess with them. But if they act despicably, she would be a fool to keep retreating.
"Jasmine! She's out! It's her! She's the president! She's the one playing with people's lives!"
"Hit her!"
At the entrance, security was holding them back, but people were throwing trash at the Douglas Group.
Someone was leading the commotion, shouting Jasmine's name, clearly prepared.
