Chapter 981 Lily Gives Up Attacking Selene

After that day, Lily tried numerous tactics to lure Selene out, but Selene refused to take the bait. Eventually, Lily had to give up, consoling herself that Vincent couldn't possibly be serious about a woman like Selene.

Vincent's Residence

Selene remained happily housebound, cheerfully experimenting with new recipes and culinary adventures. Today, she was learning to make vegetable sandwiches.

"These are the last organic vegetables of the season—once they're gone, there won't be any more until next year," said the next-door neighbor who had taken a liking to Selene and brought over autumn's final organic harvest.

Selene immediately set to work creating vegetable sandwiches, which reminded her of her childhood favorite—the sandwiches her mother used to make. Unfortunately, her life had been difficult; she'd lost both parents at a young age.

Lost in memories of her parents while making the sandwiches, she didn't notice how many she was preparing until it was too late. By the time Vincent returned home, the entire house was filled with the aroma of sandwiches.

Vincent walked into the dining room and stared in shock at the stacks upon stacks of sandwiches covering the table, and at Selene still busily working away.

"Darling, are you planning a charity event?" Vincent asked, genuinely stunned.

Selene refused to admit her mistake, putting her hands on her hips. "We can store them in the fridge and eat them gradually."

Vincent looked at the mountain of sandwiches with horror. "I have a better idea. Why don't we share some with Ethan, Liam, and the others?"

Selene's eyes lit up. "That's perfect!"

Vincent, who rarely ate sandwiches, graciously consumed three of them. Though they weren't his favorite, they were made by Selene's hands. To Vincent, these sandwiches tasted like home. Things he once dismissed now brought him immense joy.

"You know what, darling? I'm having second thoughts. Maybe we should keep them all for ourselves. We could get a bigger refrigerator," Vincent suggested, already considering having a larger fridge delivered.

"But we already agreed," Selene pouted. "Don't be so stingy."

Vincent nodded in surrender. "Alright then."

Selene began packaging the sandwiches. "This one's for Liam, and this one's for Maeve."

Vincent quickly grabbed one package and pointed to another. "Liam and Maeve can share one package."

"Why?" Selene asked, catching on slowly.

"Haven't you noticed something between those two?" Vincent asked with amusement. Only Selene could be so oblivious.

"What?" Selene was shocked. "That's impossible. Maeve is my best friend. She would have told me if she and Liam were together."

Vincent raised an eyebrow. "Maybe they haven't made it official yet? I'm telling you, there's something going on there."

"Don't make things up," Selene snatched the bag back and placed it on the table.

"This one's for Mr. Douglas, and this one's for Jasmine."

Vincent frowned. "They're married, aren't they? Surely they can share."

"Jasmine has a full house. She needs more."

"This is for Tom and Connor."

"Why'd you give them just one bag for both?" Vincent smirked.

Selene's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Maeve and I think they'd be perfect together! I wonder if anything will happen between them."

Vincent's mouth twitched. "Tom doesn't understand relationships at all."

Selene huffed. "You don't get it."

Vincent fell silent.

"And these are for Bradley and Mr. Russell."

Vincent didn't argue with this pairing—Bradley and Brandon were indeed a couple. They had even gotten married abroad.

With the sandwiches packaged, Selene prepared for Vincent to drive her around for deliveries. Just as they were about to leave, Vincent's assistant rushed in, looking flustered.

"Mr. Douglas, Ms. Taylor's assistant called. She's attempting suicide at home. No one can talk her down. They're asking if you could come over!"

Vincent's expression darkened. "Is this her first suicide attempt? Do I need to be notified about this in the future?"

The assistant scratched his head. "It seems more serious this time."

Vincent dismissed it. "She values her life too much to end it."

A woman like Lily always put her interests first. This was clearly a ploy to lure him over, and Vincent was too clear-headed to fall for it.

"If Lily is so wealthy, why would she be after your inheritance?" Selene asked, puzzled.

"Pure greed," Vincent replied, picking up the sandwiches and heading out.

Selene nodded. "You're right. That's why I need to be content. When you die, I promise I won't covet anyone else's inheritance."

Vincent stumbled, nearly losing his balance.

How wonderful. Before marriage, he had lived a boring, solitary life. Now Selene constantly had his inheritance on her mind.

Watching Vincent and Selene leave, the assistant was astonished. Since Selene's arrival, Vincent had become a completely different person. It was surreal seeing someone like Vincent—a handsome, powerful man—personally carrying bags of sandwiches.

The contrast was jarring.

Selene happily followed Vincent, like a little shadow.

Selene's background was even more tragic than Lily's, yet she never complained about her fate or harbored malicious thoughts. She remained innocently content with what she had. When she had money, she enjoyed it; when she didn't, she worked hard, even taking multiple jobs, getting little sleep, and eating poorly—yet she remained cheerful.

Vincent no longer disliked Liam as much, recognizing that Liam had discovered Selene's goodness. Meeting Liam had been Selene's good fortune, and meeting Selene had been Vincent's.

So when Ethan said Vincent had lost to Liam this time, he didn't argue. Without Liam finding Selene first and keeping her close, Vincent might have missed his chance with her forever.

He knew himself too well—even if he had glimpsed Selene in some corner of a shopping mall, he never would have fallen for her at first sight. His feelings for Selene had developed gradually through their time together.

He was grateful to Liam for bringing such a wonderful, obedient wife into his life. Selene was truly obedient—when told not to go out, she stayed in, making it impossible for Lily to find an opportunity to harm her.

She was perfectly well-behaved.
