Chapter 47 Justin and Ethan Look Alike
Ethan offered no explanation and just shot Liam a look. "Find her."
His gaze fell on Justin's bruised cheek, darkening his expression. "Who hit you?"
Justin hung his head in silence.
"Mr. Douglas, what a scene—aren't you the ones who trample others beneath your feet?" Richard mocked with a sneer.
Justin looked up at Ethan, his eyes bloodshot.
Suddenly, his nose felt warm, and a fresh trickle of blood began to flow. Frightened, Justin raised a hand to his nose and turned away, crouching down, not wanting to alarm Ethan.
"Justin." Richard dropped the stick he was holding and rushed to wipe Justin's nose with a tissue, but his injured hand was clumsy, and he accidentally smeared blood all over him.
Liam was about to step in to help when Ethan beat him to it, taking over with the tissue.
"Let's get to the hospital," Ethan said, his frown deepening as he saw Justin's nosebleed not letting up, speaking with a sense of urgency in his voice.
"Give me back my nephew," Richard said, eyeing Ethan warily, wondering what he was up to. Was he playing the philanthropist?
"Mr. Richard, Mr. Douglas is concerned for the child's well-being. You should also head to the hospital with us—this isn't the time for stubborn pride," Liam interjected, opening the car door for Ethan.
Richard hesitated for a moment, dusted himself off, and got into Ethan's car.
Liam caught Ethan's eye in the rearview mirror—something was definitely off. And he had this bizarre hunch that Justin and Ethan resembled each other.
Could it be that six years ago...
Startled by his own thoughts, Liam shook his head vigorously. No, Felix was the manipulative one back in the day. He claimed it was Harper, and Harper had even admitted it, providing detailed accounts of that evening and the hotel room number.
It was unlikely for a girl to make a joke at the expense of her own reputation.
Besides, if Jasmine was indeed the mysterious person that night, how could she not recognize Ethan?
In Silverlight City, who didn't know Mr. Douglas?
Shaking his head again, Liam figured he might be overthinking it. Perhaps Mr. Douglas just had a genuine fondness for Justin.
"Daddy..." Justin sat quietly in the car, his nose plugged with a tissue while softly calling out to Ethan.
Ethan ruffled Justin's hair. "Don't worry, we'll be at the hospital soon."
With reddened eyes, Justin looked up at Ethan. "Daddy, where did Mom go?"
"Mom's getting Justin a toy, she'll be back shortly," Ethan signaled Liam to hurry and find Jasmine.
Liam nodded in response.
Justin had a nosebleed earlier, and between the shock and getting hit, he felt dizzy.
Richard glanced back at Justin worriedly. Seeing the boy listless, he whispered, "Mr. Douglas... is there any food in the car? Justin might have low blood sugar..."
If there had been any other choice, he wouldn't have asked Ethan, but in his rush to get in the car, he'd forgotten to bring snacks for Justin.
Ethan paused and was slightly taken aback; he was a clean freak and never kept anything in his car.
Liam, equally worried, shook his head. "Mr. Douglas, there's nothing."
Ethan frowned. "We should keep some snacks in the car for emergencies."
Liam, still shaken up from the past few days' events and intimidated by Ethan, nodded repeatedly.
...
At the hospital.
Ethan held Justin while the doctors checked him out. At the same time, Richard was whisked away to have his wounded hand x-rayed and treated.
"The medical bill? And the fee for the child's checkup? Sir, it's already been paid," Richard was told when he went to handle the payment.
Richard furrowed his brows, uncertain of what Ethan's gesture meant.
Ethan, too, was a member of the Douglas Family.
It was the combined forces of the Douglas and the Wilson families that had nearly driven his own family to ruin.
Richard couldn't imagine feeling any warmth toward the Douglas family, yet he couldn't see what Ethan, a man of his stature, might want from Justin either. Ethan's concern seemed genuine.
"How much is the total cost?" Richard murmured.
The receptionist glanced up. "Sir, the total for the examination and medication comes to six thousand seven hundred."
Richard paused, aghast. Six thousand seven hundred... He didn't have that kind of money to pay Ethan back now.
"Mr. Richard!" Liam, his expression grave after buying snacks for Justin, approached. "About Justin's condition, we need to talk. The tests show he has hemolytic anemia. Are you aware of this?"
Richard nodded.
"Could it be hereditary? Who is the child's father?" Ethan had consulted a specialist who still recommended the biological father's cooperation to ascertain the exact cause and to determine whether a heterologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant was necessary.
"Heh... I'd like to know who that bastard is," Richard said under his breath.
Liam stared in shock. Jasmine couldn't possibly joke about her child's health; the father's collaboration was essential.
Could it be Jasmine truly didn't know who Justin's father was?
