Chapter 563: Watching the Excitement on the Spot
Fiona gave a nod. "Nolan, I've made up my mind."
She brushed off Nolan's hand and started to walk away.
Nolan just stood there, staring into space for what felt like forever, before plopping down next to Cordelia. "Mom, does it really matter whose kid she is? Fiona's got thyroid cancer, and it's getting worse. She's sick and doesn't know what the future holds."
Cordelia sat there, stiff as a board, before finally looking at Nolan. "I've got three sons and one daughter, and you're the one who's most like your dad."
Nolan was a lot like William, but he got the good parts and ditched the bad.
Moms got their kids. Even if they were mad or disappointed, they eventually got it.
Nolan had a big heart. He was the most sensitive of the three boys and super emotional. As the oldest, he took on the roles of both brother and 'dad' from a young age.
Whether it was looking after his two younger brothers or Fiona, he was always there.
So, out of the three brothers, Nolan had the deepest bond with Fiona, having watched her grow up.
Nolan got Fiona and felt for her. He really saw her as his sister.
"I'm sorry, Mom." Nolan hung his head and clenched his hands, knowing he'd hurt Cordelia.
"No need to apologize. Everyone's got their own perspective. We both did what we thought was right and have clear consciences." But Cordelia had a clear conscience for herself, and William had a clear conscience for Fiona.
"I want to know the truth, not to out Fiona or make her life hell in the Cunningham family, but to get answers and make those who hurt me pay. I want to dig up the evidence and bring those responsible to justice. I won't let any of them off the hook."
Cordelia let out a bitter laugh.
"Lots of people told me, after all these years, I've raised Fiona, and if I don't expose the truth, I can have another daughter. What's the point of finding out the truth? It's not worth it."
"But it's not about that. I've been obsessed for half my life. I owe Jasmine a lot. I don't just want to send people to jail; I want to give myself and Jasmine some closure."
"My daughter suffered out there, and I can't let the culprits live comfortably."
Cordelia looked at Nolan. "Fiona's the sister you raised. Jasmine's your biological sister. I know you looked into Sophia for Jasmine's sake, but Fiona and Sophia are different people. I won't mix them up."
She still had a shred of sanity left.
Nolan knew how much Cordelia hated Sophia, so he worried his mom would take it out on Fiona.
"I'm sorry, Mom. I thought..." Nolan was scared Cordelia was blinded by hate.
"In this, I should apologize too. When I first found out Fiona wasn't my daughter, I lost it. During my worst years of depression, I did take it out on Fiona and didn't want to see her. But I'd never hurt her."
Nolan hung his head. "On Fiona's eighteenth birthday, she made you a cake herself, but you didn't eat it and tossed it in the trash. She was crushed for a long time."
Back then, Cordelia was deep in the throes of severe depression. Seeing Fiona was like a punch to the gut, reminding her of her own daughter and filling her with sadness, fear, and worry. She was constantly anxious about whether her daughter was safe, fed, clothed, or even alive.
The housekeeper had tossed the cake, thinking it would upset Cordelia. They had talked about it later.
"Mom, I'm not gonna let Sophia off the hook for what she did to our family. Once we have enough dirt on her, she'll pay big time. I love Jasmine too much to let her suffer anymore." Nolan was making a promise to Cordelia.
"You've always been the glue holding this family together. When I was sick, you took care of your siblings and raised them. I've always trusted you." Cordelia's eyes were getting misty. "It's tough to balance everything. If the paternity test hurts Fiona, I'm sorry, but I have no other choice."
"I'm sorry, Mom." Nolan's voice was rough, his head hanging low.
"Once this is all over, get Fiona the treatment she needs. When my mind's at peace, I'll treat all of you right." Cordelia promised not to give Nolan any more grief.
During her dark days, it was Nolan who kept the family from falling apart, looking after his sister and brothers.
"Mom, don't say that." Nolan took a deep breath. "We'll get the evidence."
Fiona and William came out too, glaring at each other and sitting as far apart as possible.
They couldn't stand each other.
William was praying this girl wasn't his daughter.
Fiona was praying this jerk wasn't her dad.
"Well, look who it is! You guys here too?" Sophia strutted in, all smiles, while they waited for the results.
She sauntered up to William in her high heels. "William, who are you here to do a paternity test with?"
William's face went pale, eyeing the bodyguards behind Sophia, too scared to say a word.
"What are you scared of? If you wanna curse, curse. Just 'cause she has bodyguards, you can't curse? Don't you have a son?" Cordelia let out a mocking laugh, egging William on.
William glanced at Nolan. Right, his son was here! What was he afraid of?
"What are you doing here!" William puffed up his chest. "Don't talk to me like that, you witch."
Sophia sneered, glancing at the door. "Only you can come for a paternity test? I booked one for my son and my husband."
She was talking about Arnold and Richard.
Cordelia sneered. "Your husband? You really have no shame."
"That's still better than you. You haven't even divorced, and you're already tangled up with another man." Sophia knew how to push William's buttons.
"Who do you think you are? You're a witch, slandering others left and right!" William snapped.
He couldn't stand Sophia and started defending Cordelia just to spite her.
Sophia's bodyguard frowned and stepped forward.
William took a step back, scared.
Nolan shot the bodyguard a cold look, got up, and sat behind William, raising his chin. "Keep cursing. We're bored waiting for the results and love a good show."
Fiona nodded. "Yeah, I love a good fight. Go on, entertain us."
