Chapter 592: Richard and Arnold's Scheme

Betty glanced at the clock: 11:59 p.m. Richard literally made it back at the last minute.

She let out a sigh of relief and shot a look at Brade. "You still here? Need me to show you the door?"

Brade frowned, then stood up, his eyes darting to Richard, who was lurking by the door.

Richard's face was a storm cloud, but he avoided Brade's gaze.

With a cold snort, Brade had someone bring in a gift for Betty and then stormed out.

The gift? A massive bouquet and a teddy bear as tall as Betty.

Betty kept her face icy, staring at Brade's offerings, her fingers clenching tight.

"Madam, should we chuck 'em?" The bodyguard asked as soon as Brade's crew left.

Betty glanced at Richard and said, "Nah, leave 'em."

The bodyguards all looked at Richard, who stayed mum.

Betty, feeling a stomachache coming on, plopped onto the sofa and yanked out a fruit knife stuck in the cushion.

The bodyguards exchanged looks and quickly bailed. Something was definitely off.

The housekeeper shut the door and skedaddled too.

Now it was just Betty and Richard in the living room.

"Why'd you come back? Didn't you remember your first love?" Betty asked.

Richard didn't say a word, just walked over and took the knife from her hand.

Betty frowned. "What are you doing? Gonna kill me?"

Richard frowned too but stayed silent, then stabbed the knife into the teddy bear's eye.

Soon enough, he pulled out a pinhole camera.

Betty's face darkened. She knew Brade was twisted, but this was next-level creepy.

Seeing Betty about to speak, Richard made a shushing gesture and dug out a bug from the teddy bear's belly.

Betty took a deep breath, her stomach hurting even more from the rage.

Why hadn't she offed that psycho earlier?

After dealing with the camera and bug, Richard tossed all of Brade's stuff out, not leaving a single thing behind.

Betty leaned back on the sofa, giving Richard a meaningful look. "What's your deal?"

Richard stayed silent, just standing there.

Betty, losing her patience, got up to leave. "Fine, just stand there then."

A few steps in, her stomachache hit hard, and she leaned against the wall, taking a painful breath.

Richard rushed over, instinctively holding her, frowning. "Does it hurt?"

Betty sneered, glaring at him. "Worried about me or your kid?"

Richard looked away, feeling a bit guilty.

"You can't even lie right. How do you expect to act?" Betty asked, curious.

She suspected Richard had his memory back but wasn't sure and had no proof.

When Richard left with Aleah, she mentioned midnight on purpose, betting he remembered everything.

Richard stayed silent.

Betty was used to it. When Richard felt guilty, he clammed up.

Betty hugged Richard tight, her voice hoarse. "You scared the crap outta me."

Richard hugged her back, holding her tight. "I'm back."

He was back and not dead.

"Who gave you this bright idea? Going undercover with those two crazy chicks?"

"Arnold," Richard said, looking sheepish.

Betty laughed. "Arnold?"

Guess Arnold didn't get his son's smarts and acting chops.

"Before everything went down, I hit up Arnold. He told me to fake a coma to see what Sophia was scheming and gather some dirt. She wanted me to lose my memory and only remember Aleah. Her expert's method? Smacking me on the head with a stick."

Richard was just as speechless. He figured Sophia got played and that her so-called expert was a total fraud.

Betty's mouth twitched. "Hit your head with a stick."

Well, it worked alright; he did lose his memory, but he forgot everyone.

"Today, when Aleah shoved you, I freaked out and remembered everything." Richard scratched his head. That expert was a joke.

Betty burst out laughing. "Then why'd you go with them?"

She shot Richard a threatening look.

"To infiltrate the enemy, know yourself and your enemy, and you’ll never lose." Richard parroted Arnold's words.

"Speak English."

"Arnold said there might be a mercenary group around Sophia, and he wanted me to check it out," Richard, sensing danger, quickly explained.

Betty squinted. "Don't underestimate them; they're not easy to deal with."

Richard nodded, scooping Betty up and carrying her to the bedroom, laying her on the bed. "I found out something today: Brade and Sophia are in cahoots, and Aleah's part of it too. They're all working together."

Betty felt exasperated, thinking Arnold's plan was a bust.

Did they really need to go undercover to figure out Brade, Sophia, and Aleah were teaming up?

"Brade's target is you. He won't let Sophia and Aleah hurt you, but he wants them to get rid of our baby," Richard said softly.

"You got this top-secret info?" Betty was surprised.

"He's not the only one who can plant bugs. I bugged Sophia's car and Aleah's bag," Richard said, a bit smug. "And I teamed up with the cops because Sophia's involved in a bunch of murder and assault cases."

Betty's eyes sparkled. "Wow, my hubby's so smart? Sacrificing love for justice? Not scared your first love will really get busted?"

Richard's ears turned red. "Don't say that. It's over between me and her."

Betty squinted, pulling Richard's ear. "Wow, you still writes love letters and diaries. Impressive."

Feeling guilty and panicked, Richard quickly hugged Betty. "Don't bring that up, it's ancient history."

"No way, I want what she had too." Betty threatened through gritted teeth.

Richard coughed lightly. "Okay, I'll start writing for you tomorrow."

Only then did Betty let him go. "Do you still need to go back?"

Richard shook his head. "I told them I was coming to settle things with you and get a divorce, so they let me out."

Betty snorted coldly.

"When are you going back tomorrow?" Betty didn't want Richard going undercover again.

But since he was helping the cops, she couldn't stop him.

"I'm not going back tomorrow. I'll go with you to the hospital for a check-up first," Richard said, a bit proud.

Betty looked at him curiously. "Wow! You can go with me for a check-up?"

"I told them I was gonna make you abort our baby." Richard waited for Betty to praise him.

He thought he was pretty clever.

Betty kicked him. "Arnold's idea?"

This father and son duo must have some genetic mutation. Arnold was sharp, Sophia was a snake, yet they had a son as naive as Richard.
