Chapter 667 the Sins are Redeemed
On the way to the cliff, Jasmine received a message from Evan.
[Jasmine, I'm sorry. I know 'I'm sorry' are the most worthless words, But I still want to say it to you. If I could do it all over again, I would never make the same mistake.]
Jasmine looked at Ben anxiously. "Can you go faster?"
Ben nodded and sped up towards the beach.
Jasmine never thought someone like Evan would commit suicide.
She didn't want him to die.
The car stopped by the beach, and Jasmine got out, running desperately towards the shore.
Her tears were uncontrollable.
"Evan."
There was only a phone by the shore, along with Evan and Elbert's car.
Jasmine leaned over the edge of the cliff, shouting Evan's name.
The waves were still crashing against the rocks, but the sea was calm.
Evelina and Alex also rushed back, running to the edge of the cliff.
"Evan."
Evelina and Alex called out Evan's name, but there was no response.
They ran desperately towards the lower rocks, looking at the figure climbing up the shore.
It was only Elbert, not Evan.
"I'm sorry." Elbert, soaking wet, sat by the shore. "I had him."
Elbert was trembling all over. "I had him."
He choked on his words.
He had caught Evan, but Evan had no will to live.
Evelina sat weakly on the rocks, silently staring at the sea.
Jasmine stood still, saying nothing.
Alex was also silent. After a long time, he spoke, "Let's go back."
This was Evan's choice.
Maybe the sea was his final destination.
To wash away his sins, to free his soul, to give him true freedom.
Jasmine stood by the shore, saying nothing, just looking at the sea.
In the next life, would he become a fish in the deep sea, unrestrained?
"Let's go." Jasmine looked at Elbert.
Elbert didn't move, still sitting there.
Jasmine said nothing more and turned to leave.
Death, sometimes, was truly a release.
Worried, Ben and Tom stayed in the living room for a long time after bringing Jasmine back to her residence.
They only relaxed after making sure Jasmine had safely come out of the shower.
"Don't take it too hard." Ben didn't know how to comfort her.
"I'm fine." Jasmine shook her head. "Everyone has their own choices, their own paths to walk."
The path Evan took might not be the worst.
Maybe, for Evan, living was the most painful thing.
Tom glanced at Ben and cautiously spoke, "Do you really not need us to stay with you? I can stand outside the door."
Jasmine smiled and shook her head. "I'm really fine."
Ben nodded, pulling Tom away. "Get some rest. We'll come by tomorrow."
Jasmine sat on the couch, holding a cup of water, lost in thought.
For the past twenty-one years, her deepest memories were of Evan.
Evan had given her a complete childhood.
He had given her twenty-one years of happiness.
But later, the person who loved her the most abandoned her, pushing her into hell.
That pain was worse than an enemy's.
"Does dying make up for the hurt you caused me?" Jasmine curled up, hugging her legs. "I wish you were alive."
"Why? Did you have to die? So easily."
Shaking all over, Jasmine suddenly lost control and threw the cup on the ground, crying out loud.
She really missed Ethan.
"Ethan, where are you?" Jasmine cried, hugging herself and curling up on the couch.
Where were you?
She really needed him.
When her soul was in pain, Ethan was her only remedy.
The next morning, when Cordelia brought Justin and Joe to see Jasmine, they found the house empty.
But Jasmine's shoes were still at the door. Where could she have gone?
"Mom." Justin ran into the main bedroom, heading to the closet.
Jasmine was curled up in the wardrobe, holding Ethan's clothes, having slept there all night.
"Mom."
"Mommy."
Justin and Joe ran over. They didn't wake Jasmine but found a position to curl up in her arms, leaning against her.
"Mommy," Joe called out softly.
Jasmine was in a deep sleep, probably due to pregnancy or emotional exhaustion. She was really tired.
Cordelia stood at the door, her eyes red, and turned to the kitchen to make breakfast for Jasmine.
Jasmine woke up groggily, looking at the two children in her arms, her heart suddenly filled.
"Mom, we'll protect you," Justin said softly. "Don't be afraid, sleep well."
When Justin was little and felt insecure, he also liked to sleep in the closet. He said holding his uncle's clothes made him feel like his dad was holding him.
"Thank goodness for you two," Jasmine whispered, kissing Justin and Joe on the forehead.
Justin looked up at Jasmine. "Mom, Uncle asked me to tell you that the company's issues have been resolved. You don't need to worry."
Jasmine smiled, tears rolling down. "Okay, Mom's not worried. Mom has you two."
The Cunningham Group's PR department intervened, and the safety incident was temporarily suppressed.
There was evidence that someone had deliberately pressed the basement button during the elevator accident, causing the elevator to go out of control, resulting in the deaths of three workers in the elevator shaft and injuries to several others in the elevator.
The police had already filed it as a criminal case for investigation.
The PR department had actively contacted the victims' families and provided compensation, and the injured were receiving the best medical care and attention at the Douglas Group's top hospital.
A month had passed since Evan's disappearance. Evelina often visited the beach alone, while Alex's search efforts yielded no sign of Evan's body.
"He longed for the deep sea, for freedom. Maybe the sea is his home."
A white rose was placed by the shore, and Evelina sat on a rock, staying there all afternoon.
"Let's go back." Alex walked over, putting a coat on Evelina. "Tomorrow is New Year's. Let's cook together and bring it to Evan."
Evelina looked at Alex and shook her head. "Sorry. I don't plan to spend it with you this year."
"Evelina." Alex choked up, speaking again, "Can't you give me one more chance?"
Evelina shook her head. "Originally, I shouldn't give you a chance. You know me. A late apology means nothing to me, but Evan pleaded for you. The divorce still stands, and the assets will still be divided. I'll give you a year. If you do well, I might consider remarrying."
Alex, with red eyes, smiled and lowered his head, squatting in front of Evelina. "You can have all the assets. We can sign the divorce papers. If you're not satisfied with me after a year, we'll get divorced."
He wouldn't be foolish enough to get the divorce certificate.
If they really got the divorce certificate, Evelina would run away.
"Alex, you really are a businessman."
Evelina brushed off Alex's hand and got into the car.
Alex quickly followed, getting into the car and leaving.
By the coast, a black car had been parked there all along.
Elbert threw the white rose in his hand behind him. "From now on, your life is mine. I unilaterally forgive all your sins. Your sins are absolved."
The past Evan was already dead.
