Chapter 966 Selene Really Isn't That Smart

Vincent's expression darkened, and one stern look sent Selene scurrying to the maid's quarters.

Though called the "maid's room," it was actually quite spacious. Selene couldn't help but marvel at how the wealthy lived—even their housekeepers had luxurious accommodations.

She hastily stripped down and rushed into the bathroom, her face burning red.

Looking at herself in the mirror, Selene felt like crying. Not because she was about to lose her virtue, but because of her flat chest.

What if Vincent changed his mind when he saw how lacking she was? What if he decided she wasn't attractive enough and sent her to prison anyway? She'd be doubly humiliated—exposed and incarcerated.

The thought made her tremble. As the shower water ran, Selene broke down sobbing.

Outside, Vincent's temple throbbed. He was beginning to regret how he'd frightened Selene.

He was coming to his senses now, realizing how bizarre his behavior had been. That so-called "arrangement" agreement? It wasn't actually for keeping her as his mistress—it was an employment contract to hire her as his chef. He'd planned to keep her away from Liam by giving her a job, even arranging to transfer her benefits through HR.

But Selene hadn't even read the document before signing it, crying hysterically like a frightened mouse.

Listening to her wailing in the bathroom, Vincent felt increasingly remorseful.

He didn't understand what had come over him. Keep her as his mistress? She was completely ordinary in his eyes, with no particular sexual appeal. Why had he felt that flutter of attraction?

Was it seeing her cry? Or wanting to make her cry...?

In the bathroom, Selene lingered, too afraid to come out. She scrutinized herself in the mirror. Her only advantages were her long legs, good skin, and youth. Her face was flawless—not stunning, but pleasant with large eyes and naturally smooth hair.

Her proportions were actually excellent—a tiny waist you could wrap your hands around. And while her chest was modest, she had a perfectly shaped rear—a natural asset with an ideal waist-to-hip ratio and rounded curves.

But having never had a boyfriend, Selene didn't understand these things. She just stared miserably at her flat chest and sniffled.

"Are you planning to stay in there forever?" Vincent knocked on the door. "Come out, I need to talk to you."

Vincent knew he'd probably frightened her. He'd just spoken with Ethan about Selene, but Ethan refused to let her go, insisting they needed to talk to Liam since he was the one who had hired her.

In other words, if Vincent wanted to keep Selene, he'd have to ask Liam for permission.

Seeing how timid Selene was, Vincent planned to speak to her gently, without intimidation.

But inside the bathroom, Selene panicked and grabbed a towel to cover herself.

Then, thinking she'd have to remove it soon anyway, she decided to just go out naked.

So she did.

Vincent froze in place, glanced down at Selene, then quickly averted his eyes.

He'd never been so dumbfounded in his life.

This woman was absolutely unbelievable.

Selene stood trembling, her bare feet fidgeting—left foot stepping on right, right foot stepping on left—before finally speaking, "You... you can't back out now. If you... sleep with me, you can't send me to prison."

Vincent rubbed his forehead in exasperation.

He'd seen plenty of women try to seduce him without clothes, but never like this.

Sighing, he grabbed a towel from the bathroom and draped it over her. "Have some dignity, would you?"

Selene burst into tears. Vincent was clearly disgusted with her.

She was doomed.

"Are you changing your mind?" she sobbed. "Is it because you've seen my body isn't good enough, so now you're going to send me to prison?"

Vincent took a deep breath. "Selene, where is your self-respect? Would you really do anything to avoid prison?"

Selene sniffled. "But you threatened me..."

"If I told you to jump off a cliff, would you do that too?" Vincent asked in frustration.

"No, I wouldn't. At least in prison I'd still be alive," Selene muttered, thinking herself quite clever for recognizing a bad deal.

She wasn't ready to die. She had too much life and youth left to enjoy.

Vincent's eye twitched with irritation. "I asked you to shower and change because I want you to attend an event with me tonight," he said through gritted teeth, pointing to clothes his assistant had left on the bed. "Put those on, make yourself presentable, and don't embarrass me."

Selene paused, then started crying again. "I knew it—you think I'm embarrassing! If that's the case, why bring me at all? Why not take your girlfriend Lily instead?"

"I told you, she's not my girlfriend," Vincent reminded her firmly.

Selene fell silent. "What kind of event is it?" she asked, worried she might embarrass herself.

"Just schmoozing with a bunch of old men," Vincent said irritably.

In Silverlight City, he still had to maintain relationships with these power players to ensure his company's stability and growth. Besides, having secretly acquired the Murray Group, he needed to pave the way carefully to avoid unexpected complications.

Selene grabbed the clothes and darted back into the bathroom, quietly closing the door.

Vincent smirked. "Now you're acting shy? You sure weren't when you walked out here naked just now."

Selene ignored him. Inside the bathroom, her face burned with embarrassment in the bathroom.

She'd made such a fool of herself. And Vincent had been disgusted by her.

It couldn't be her fault. What was wrong with being flat-chested? It was fashionable now.

Vincent just didn't know quality when he saw it.

As long as he didn't send her to prison, she'd be fine.

In the living room, Vincent left Selene's room with quickened, heated breathing that he was clearly trying to control.

Sitting on the sofa, he took a sip of cold water.

His ears were still red.

He'd seen plenty of women before.

Selene wasn't particularly beautiful or exceptional, yet somehow, she affected him.

He cleared his throat and looked away, trying to distract himself.

This was madness! How could he be attracted to such a young woman?

He must be losing his mind.

Taking a deep breath, Vincent went to the kitchen and gulped down a bottle of ice-cold drink from the refrigerator.

That finally cooled the heat in his chest.

Leaning against the doorframe, Vincent watched as Selene emerged shyly from her room.

The dress had been his choice—somehow he'd known it would suit her.

And indeed, she looked... quite beautiful in it.
