Chapter 410 How did Alex Handle Karen?
Alex was stunned, feeling incredulous. Clearly, he hadn't realized what he did wrong or how much he had hurt Evelina.
He felt a bit guilty but didn't think he deserved such severe consequences. "Is she going to divorce me?"
Alex couldn't recover for a long time. "Cordelia, I can explain this. I think I can explain it. Evelina and I won't get divorced. Karen and I really didn't do anything inappropriate; Evelina knows me!"
Alex was a bit anxious; perhaps, from his perspective, he couldn't see his own mistakes.
Cordelia sighed and shook her head. "You two have been together for many years. Whether you were pretending or sincere, you did it too perfectly. While your current actions may not be overly egregious, they still leave a lingering sense of unease."
"Evelina is an extremely sensitive person. You clearly know her boundaries, yet you still test and touch them."
Alex had set his standards too high. He had always been a good man, always cared about Evelina's feelings, but he hurt her precisely in the areas she cared about the most.
"Moreover, you know that Evelina had a massive hemorrhage while giving birth to your child and lost her uterus. This has always been the greatest pain of her life and her most sensitive topic."
Cordelia looked at Alex. "You came back for Karen and your son at all costs, even if it meant hurting her heart more than anything else you could have done."
Alex lowered his head guiltily and took a long time to speak, "I admit, sometimes I don't understand. I do hope to have a child to take over my business so I can retire early and spend time with her."
Cordelia shook her head. "The most heartbreaking thing is that you went to find Karen alone, making her feel like the past twenty years with you were a joke."
"I've been busy with work all these years and haven't had time to spend with her. I can't bear to hand over the company to someone unrelated by blood. I do hope to have a child, but it's just a thought. When Karen said, Evan wasn't Benjamin's son, my first reaction was excitement. I hoped the child was mine, and I ignored Evelina's feelings."
Alex pleaded softly, "Let me see her."
"She won't see you. She wants to let you be with your son and Karen," Cordelia said coldly.
Alex was completely panicked and nervously stepped forward. "Cordelia, you're her best friend. You know how hard it's been for us all these years. Please help me persuade her. I want to see her."
"Alex, you want Evelina to forgive you, and then what? Evan is your son. You want him back, and you'll give him your assets. This will create many ties between you, Evan, and Karen, and Evelina will never be happy again." Cordelia said as she shook her head. "Long-term pain is worse than short-term pain."
"I can handle it," Alex said firmly.
Cordelia sighed. "I've already given you a chance. Solve the issue with Karen first, then talk about your relationship with Evelina. There are too many entanglements between you two—assets and shares. Divorce won't be easy, and it won't be resolved in a day or two."
Cordelia took out her phone. "I don't want Evelina to be heartbroken and desperate. She called you over ten times. We said if you could come to see her within an hour, she would give you another chance, but you only came now."
Alex frantically took out his phone. "Maybe it's a signal issue. I didn't receive any calls, not a single missed call."
Alex, afraid Cordelia wouldn't believe him, showed her his call log.
"Because the person who answered the call was Karen." Cordelia sneered. "She answered and told me not to call again."
Alex frowned. "She shouldn't have done that."
"Benjamin has a mistress and a son outside. Karen, who is extremely power-hungry and needs security, kept Evan, your son. She wants to secure herself, not because she likes you." Cordelia sneered. "Karen and Sophia are the same kind of people."
They were both ruthless women.
"Impossible, she..." Alex tried to explain to Karen. "She isn't that bad; this might just be a misunderstanding."
Cordelia frowned. "I initially thought you could be forgiven, which is why I came to talk to you. Since you think it's all a misunderstanding, then go be with her."
Cordelia felt Alex was also someone who couldn't be reasoned with and instantly lost the patience to continue talking to him.
"That's not what I meant," Alex said awkwardly, "I'm just afraid you're overthinking it, causing Evelina to misunderstand."
Cordelia laughed mockingly; she shouldn't have tried to help.
"Suit yourself." Cordelia didn't want to say more and turned to leave.
"Cordelia, you misunderstood me." Alex felt a headache coming on.
From his understanding of Evelina, she definitely wouldn't see him tonight.
Now that he had also offended Cordelia, the chances of seeing Evelina were even lower.
He sighed wearily and leaned against the car.
In the room.
Evelina, indeed, hadn't slept; she couldn't possibly fall asleep.
When Cordelia pushed the door open, Evelina was standing by the window, looking out.
She still had feelings for Alex, after all. But she was clear-headed and rational.
"He probably doesn't want to get back with Karen. He came back to see if Evan was his son. He said he hasn't spent much time with you these past few years and doesn't want to hand over his business to someone unrelated by blood. He thought having a son to help manage the company would allow him to spend more time with you. It's just a simple thought." Cordelia still wanted to mediate.
She knew Alex and Evelina had been together for many years. She didn't say much; she just repeated what Alex had said earlier.
Even though she was very angry with Alex.
"But don't make any hasty decisions. See what he does first. I think it depends on how he handles the situation with Karen. If he can stand by your side and handle it well, then give him another chance. If he can't, keeping him will only make you sad."
Cordelia squeezed Evelina's shoulder. "Don't overthink it, cheer up."
Evelina smiled helplessly. "Evan is his son. If he wants to give all his assets to him, there's no possibility for us."
"It's not that I'm selfish; it's that Evan is a child Alex had with another woman. He shouldn't have a share in the company and assets we built together." Evelina's voice choked.
Moreover, if Evan easily got everything from Alex, there would still be ties between Alex and Karen.
