Chapter 646 They Saw Ethan Downstairs
Mark's face went pale as he grabbed his subordinate by the collar. "You sure you saw him?"
The subordinate nodded, looking jittery. "Yeah, I saw him downstairs."
Mark shoved him aside and stormed out.
'Ethan, you just couldn't stay put, could you?' he thought.
Downstairs, Jasmine stepped out of the building, paused, and glanced back at the corner.
"What's up?" Tom asked, scanning the area.
Jasmine shook her head. "Nothing."
Maybe she missed Ethan too much, or maybe she was just being paranoid, but she always felt like someone was watching her lately.
"Claire was really trying to get under your skin today. What's the plan?" Ben asked, trailing behind Jasmine.
"She's a pain. We need to get her locked up first, cut off all of Mark's escape routes, and then dig up more dirt." Jasmine rubbed her temples. "Back then, she and Karen framed me and got me thrown in jail. The Wilson family's nanny took the fall. Ben, find a way to make her recant."
Ben nodded. "Got it, Ma'am."
"To get Claire locked up, I need to see Karen." Jasmine got into the car, frowning.
Karen was one of the main players who framed her and sent her to prison. She and Claire had a mutual understanding, which was why they kept each other's secrets. If they could use Karen's interests as leverage, maybe they could turn her against Claire.
"Once Daniel and Claire are locked up, Mark's only card left is Lisa." Ben glanced at Jasmine. "Claire was in such a rush to bury Howard, probably because she was scared someone would say her two kids weren't his."
Now, even if Lisa and Daniel weren't Howard's kids, there was no way to prove it. But since he raised them, Lisa was still one of Howard's legal heirs.
Once Daniel and Claire were out of the picture, Mark's only hope would be Lisa.
And Lisa was in Jasmine's hands.
To get Lisa back, Mark would have to play ball with Jasmine and spill the beans on everything.
Jasmine was dead set this time.
Downstairs at the Douglas Group, Mark ran out, his face like thunder, watching Jasmine's car drive away. He looked around. "Where is he?"
The subordinate looked around nervously. "I swear I saw him in a black tracksuit, standing right here. His face was terrifying."
Did he mess up?
"Damn it! Find him!" Mark cursed, scanning the area. It was empty, but it gave him the creeps.
'Ethan, are you really dead or not?' Mark wondered.
"Where did Jasmine take Lisa? Any leads?" Mark asked, feeling more and more uneasy.
He thought with Howard dead and Ethan out of the picture, everything was going his way. He didn't expect Jasmine to be such a tough nut to crack!
"Sir, We haven't found Lisa. Jasmine's crew is too careful. They took Lisa and Casey, and we lost them." The subordinate hung his head.
Mark gritted his teeth, fists clenched. He had seriously underestimated Jasmine!
At Capital Hospital, the doctor gave Amelia a sedative, and she finally fell asleep. Nolan, looking a mess, sat by her bedside, clutching her critical condition notice and surgery consent form.
That night, he was just in a bad mood, drank too much, and went to the beach alone to clear his head.
He really didn't mean to blow off Amelia's calls.
He didn't know the kid was his, but even if it were, he would've made Amelia get rid of it.
He wasn't out to hurt her; he just thought neither he nor Nathaniel could step up and take responsibility. How could a young, unmarried girl handle being pregnant? How would she ever get married after that?
Rubbing his temples, Nolan glanced at Amelia.
He meant well; he just didn't think it would hurt her this much.
"Don't take my baby," Amelia mumbled in her sleep; she really cared about that child.
She had seriously thought about secretly having that baby.
She hadn't even thought about getting married and having kids later on.
Amelia kept murmuring in her dreams. "Don't touch my baby."
Amelia had a nightmare, dreaming some bad guy was coming to take her baby.
Waking up slowly, tears in her eyes, she realized it was just a dream.
Her baby was long gone.
There would be no baby.
"Amelia, calm down. Let's talk," Nolan said, walking over, his voice low.
Amelia looked at Nolan, dazed, then turned away. "We have nothing to talk about. Just stay out of my life."
"No matter whose kid it was, I'm responsible for your condition." Nolan's fingers felt numb, his heart aching for some reason.
"Take this money as my apology." Nolan placed a check on the table. "I'm sorry about your dad. The dead can't come back. If you need my help in the future, you can always come to me."
Nolan was a businessman; he knew when to cut his losses. He realized his feelings for Amelia were off, and he needed to leave quickly.
In his mind, Amelia just needed money. Giving her enough was his way of making things right.
"You don't owe me anything. I chose to abort the baby. Take your money and leave." Amelia's voice was raspy.
"Turning down money now isn't smart. The Carter family's in a tough spot. Without this, your life will be hard." Nolan frowned, thinking like a businessman.
Amelia clenched her fists, tears streaming down her face.
Nolan was always so rational, treating everything like a business deal.
It was like she wasn't a person, just someone he could hurt whenever.
"I'd rather beg on the streets than have anything to do with you!" Amelia's emotions flared up again.
Nolan, worried about upsetting her more, raised his hand. "Okay! But if you change your mind, you can always come to me."
In Nolan's mind, he was giving Amelia a huge favor.
Letting her come to him anytime meant he was willing to support her for life. As long as she asked, he'd help.
But Amelia didn't want any of that.
"Just go!" Amelia closed her eyes, shouting weakly.
Why wasn't he leaving?
Nolan stood by the bed, looking at Amelia for a long time before turning to leave.
But as he reached the door, Nolan stopped, and he got a hunch he'd regret this.
Looking back at the ward, he saw Amelia struggling to sit up, tearing the check he left into pieces.
