Chapter 728 The Truth Behind the Replacement of Daughter
"Alex." Cordelia frowned.
It was time to deal with Sophia.
She had been active for so long, and they finally had some evidence. They couldn't let her go just like that.
"I'll talk to Willian." Cordelia agreed.
Arnold, however, was a bit upset and ignored Richard.
Richard looked bewildered. Wasn't it Arnold who told him to wrap things up quickly and go home to be with Betty for the birth of their child?
Why was he angry now?
"Mom."
When Jasmine returned, she was surprised to see them there.
"Jasmine, you're back just in time. I've found Sophia's weakness," Richard quickly said, hoping to cheer Jasmine up.
Everyone had heard about Emily's situation.
Jasmine nodded. "The opportunity has finally come."
"And there's another piece of news: May has woken up," Ethan said, glancing at his phone. "May had been in a coma, and I had publicly declared her dead to make Sophia lower her guard. Raymond just called to say she's awake."
Cordelia suddenly stood up.
May was the mastermind behind the true and false daughter case, the vicious woman who had separated her from Jasmine for so many years!
Cordelia wished she could tear her apart.
"She's still pretending to be crazy and won't reveal the truth from back then. Raymond has his ways; it won't take long." Ethan reassured Jasmine and Cordelia.
Cordelia nodded. "You are always reliable. We're not in a hurry."
Sophia's days were numbered.
Cordelia reached out and hugged Jasmine, her voice choked with emotion. "It's my fault for not protecting you, making you suffer all these years."
Jasmine's eyes reddened. "Mom, it's not your fault."
Richard also lowered his head in guilt and spoke softly, "Let me see her. Maybe she'll tell the truth."
After all these years, even raising a dog would create some feelings.
Serena was already dead, and May would surely be wondering who to rely on in her old age.
"Okay." Ethan nodded.
At Private Hospital, Raymond took Jasmine, Cordelia, and Richard to a relatively secluded ward where May was.
At that moment, May was still pretending to be crazy, acting like she remembered nothing, just lying there motionless.
The ward was full of cameras, and only Richard entered the room.
Seeing Richard, May got excited and called out, "Richard, get me out of here. These people are all bad."
"Serena is dead," Richard said directly.
May froze for a moment and then started crying. "You're all lying to me."
It seemed Raymond had already used Serena's death to provoke her.
"Sophia killed her. Sophia has a group of mercenaries. You know I wouldn't lie to you," Richard said in a low voice.
May was stunned for a moment and then suddenly started crying, hitting her legs. "That heartless bitch! I raised her son, and this is how she treats my daughter!"
"You're getting old, and you'll have to rely on me in the future. I have money now; I'm not the poor kid I used to be." Richard knew exactly what May valued.
May felt reassured. "You're the only one with a conscience, after all these years of raising you."
Richard clenched his fists tightly.
How ironic.
"Richard, Sophia set all this up. She ran off with Gabriel, not knowing she was pregnant with Guadalupe's kid. She thought you were Gabriel's and was happy to marry him. But when you were born, your blood type didn't match. Gabriel got mad, beat her, and took back the money. She didn’t want her life ruined, so she left you with me and took off."
May cried as she spoke, "Sophia, that heartless woman, left you with me when I was just a kid. How was I supposed to get married with you around? I worked as a maid for the Wilsons. Benjamin was a creep, and I ended up pregnant. Karen was tough."
"To survive, I ran away, married a sickly man, and had a hard life with you. When my baby was born, I was so thin you could see my bones. I didn't want my child to suffer. Then Sophia came back with a baby girl, saying she had a rich man's kid. The rich man's wife was about to give birth."
"She asked me to switch her daughter with the rich family's child so her daughter could inherit the Cunningham family's shares."
"I was heavily pregnant and took the risk to go to that hospital. After the baby was born, I bribed a nurse to switch them. My water broke that day too, and Serena was born. Looking at her, I thought she shouldn't suffer with me. With Sophia's reminder, I had an idea."
May wiped her tears and looked at Richard. "I secretly bribed a maid from the Wilsons and found out Karen's due date. It was like fate; our due dates were all around the same time. Who could tell the difference between newborns? I kept Jasmine. I sent Serena to the Wilsons and gave their baby to Sophia. But I never expected Jasmine to be born with a congenital heart defect. I couldn't afford her surgery, and Sophia was worried our secret would be exposed if she died. So, I swapped Jasmine with the Wilson family's daughter."
May recounted the baby-switching incident.
"Back then, medical conditions and surveillance weren't as advanced as they are now. Karen was indifferent to her child. I knew she was a cold person. When the child was born, she didn't even look at her. She just handed her over to the wet nurse. She didn't even know I had switched the babies."
May criticized Karen for not knowing her biological daughter had been switched.
"Cordelia's child was premature, and she had a hemorrhage during childbirth. She was barely saved and couldn't take care of Jasmine. She came here for business while pregnant, with no family around. It was easy for me to switch her child." May sighed. "Everything was fine until I, unwilling to let my daughter suffer, let it slip that she was actually Benjamin's daughter, a rich man's child."
"You know Serena. I spoiled her. She couldn't bear hardship. When she found out she was Benjamin's child, she came up with the idea of the true and false daughters. She made me admit I had switched the children out of greed. But Jasmine was never my daughter. I just wanted Serena to have a good life."
May didn't think she had done anything wrong.
