Chapter 940 Ethan Returned Home and Was 'Cheated On'
"Nolan! Nolan, are you okay?" Edgar shouted frantically, leaping from the car before it fully stopped. He raced through the chaos, searching among scattered bodies, tears streaming down his face.
"Yes," Nolan muttered, rising to his feet. He'd merely been crouching to untie his shoelaces when Edgar's dramatic wailing began.
The moment Edgar spotted him, he charged forward and enveloped Nolan in a crushing embrace. His baseball cap smacked directly into Nolan's eye with a painful thud.
Nolan saw stars, tears involuntarily streaming down his face as pain radiated through his eyeball.
"Don't cry, buddy! I know being kidnapped is scary, but you're safe now," Edgar said, misinterpreting Nolan's tears entirely.
Ethan witnessed the entire scene with a deadpan expression, deciding it was better not to comment.
After police documented the scene and took Nolan's statement, they departed to pursue the mercenaries who had intervened in the kidnapping. In Moscow, gang warfare was commonplace—though hostages rarely survived such encounters.
"You're a very lucky man," an officer remarked in somewhat broken Silverlight City dialect, patting Nolan's shoulder.
Still nursing his injured eye, Nolan reached for Ethan's phone. "I need to call my wife."
"Already did," Ethan replied. "Mom says Amelia's sound asleep. We shouldn't disturb her—let's head back first."
Ethan couldn't help but reflect on the strange workings of fate. If Amelia weren't such a carefree, sleep-loving young woman, this situation would have been far more tragic. Somehow, the universe had paired Nolan with exactly the right kind of wife—someone blissfully uncomplicated.
Back in Silverlight City, Amelia finally stirred from her deep slumber. Childbirth had completely drained her energy. As she attempted to stretch, pain shot through her surgical incision, instantly bringing tears to her eyes.
"Amelia?" Cordelia rushed to her bedside, gently wiping sweat and tears from her daughter's face. "What's wrong? Are you in pain? Should I call the doctor?"
Amelia shook her head. "Mom, I had a nightmare."
Cordelia sighed with relief. "Don't worry, sweetheart. I'm right here."
"I dreamed Nolan was mean to me—giving all the good food to the baby and not loving me anymore," Amelia confessed. In her dream, Nolan had taken their baby and told her that now she'd fulfilled her purpose, she could leave.
"Mom... he wouldn't pay me off to leave the Cunningham family, would he?" she asked anxiously. "That's what happens in all those novels. You wouldn't pay me to leave too, would you?"
Cordelia couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry at Amelia's imagination.
"Hoping for double payment? Dream on," Jasmine teased, entering with a thermos. "I brought you some chicken soup. Want some?"
Seeing Jasmine only increased Amelia's anxiety. "Or worse—would you make me leave without any money at all?"
"You need to stop reading those billionaire romance novels. The Cunningham family doesn't produce such heartless people," Jasmine reassured her.
"But he did pay me to leave before," Amelia mumbled defiantly.
Jasmine was momentarily speechless—Nolan had indeed behaved terribly in the past.
"Their flight was delayed. They only took off last night and should be here soon," she said, changing the subject.
Amelia brightened. "It's about time he got back! The baby's already here. Where is she, anyway?"
Only now did she remember her newborn.
Some mother she was turning out to be.
Jasmine lifted the tiny bundle from the bassinet and placed her in Amelia's arms. "Here's your daughter."
One look, and Amelia's eyes welled up again. "Why is she so ugly?"
"She'll get cuter as she grows," Jasmine laughed. "Ellis looked like a wrinkled little old man when he was born too."
Amelia sniffled, amazed at the feelings overwhelming her. Before holding her baby, she'd felt no maternal instinct whatsoever. But with this tiny being in her arms, motherly love surged through her unexpectedly.
She was barely more than a child herself, and now she was someone's mother.
"Baby, what's your name?" she cooed softly.
"That's for you and Nolan to decide together," Cordelia smiled.
Amelia placed a gentle kiss on the baby's forehead. Though wrinkled and strange-looking, she was perfect—so tiny and precious.
Meanwhile, at the international airport, Nolan's group had just landed. Edward, who had stayed behind in Moscow to handle the aftermath, called immediately.
"I followed that group to the docks. They met with Tyrell Baldwin—Kavi's former second-in-command."
"Could he be the person we're looking for?" Nolan frowned.
"Not necessarily, but following this thread should eventually lead us to our target," Edward replied. "Our people have successfully infiltrated their operation. We should have results soon."
As they exited the airport, reporters swarmed around them.
"Mr. Douglas, is it true that Lily, CEO of Powell Corporation, has been attempting to seduce you?"
"Mr. Douglas, are you having an inappropriate relationship with Lily?"
"Mr. Douglas, did your wife Jasmine publicly accuse Lily of trying to steal you away at the recent bidding conference?"
Ethan froze, completely blindsided by the questions.
"What nonsense is this?" Edgar muttered, equally confused.
"Mr. Douglas, your wife slapped Lily at the bidding conference, accusing her of inappropriate behavior and attempting to seduce you. Are you having an affair with her?"
Ethan finally understood what they were asking. Jasmine had publicly accused him of having an intimate relationship with Lily? This was the misunderstanding of the century.
His eye twitched as he responded tersely, "I refuse to answer that question," before climbing into the waiting car and shutting the door firmly.
The media interpreted his silence as guilt. Surely there must be something between him and Lily—why else would Jasmine so boldly confront her? Besides, Lily had a reputation for being seductive, with rumors linking her to Beck and Rhett.
In the car, Ethan nervously called Jasmine. "About this situation with Lily... what exactly happened?"
The silence on the other end only increased his anxiety.
"Honey, I've been with Nolan the whole time," he hastily explained. "I haven't done anything wrong. Lily must be spreading lies—I barely even look at her, I swear."
"I know," Jasmine replied, suppressing laughter. "We'll talk when you get home."
But to Ethan's panicked ears, her voice sounded tearful.
He was in serious trouble now.
