Chapter 907 Rhett Suspects Lily and Vincent
In the Capital Hospital, Lily couldn't keep her cool any longer. Rhett had slipped into a coma again, and this time, his injuries were worse than before. She stormed into the hospital, her anger barely contained, and found Avery sitting quietly by Rhett's bedside.
Rhett had woken up, but his head was wrapped in bandages, and he looked pitiful and confused.
"Hey, Mrs. Murray, can I have a word with Mr. Murray alone?" Lily asked, trying to keep her voice steady, hoping Avery would give them some privacy.
Avery glanced at Rhett with a gentle smile.
Rhett felt a shiver run down his spine. He couldn't speak because his mouth was full of blisters from burns. He had no idea who had poured hot water into his mouth while he was unconscious.
Avery's smile didn't waver. "I'm sorry, but my husband is so clumsy that he managed to burn himself with hot water and end up here. I can't trust anyone to be alone with him. Whatever you need to say, you can say it here. I'm Rhett's wife now, and I've left the Hawthorne Group. You can think of me as a housewife."
Rhett glared at her in frustration, but there was nothing he could do. Avery's gentle demeanor made him uneasy. It had become a conditioned response.
Lily frowned, her anger simmering. She didn't trust Avery. Rhett might be a jerk, but it was unlikely he'd suddenly be this unlucky. Avery seemed highly suspicious.
Lily wasn't stupid. There was no way she would discuss their plans in front of Avery. Rhett's hands were broken so that he couldn't use his phone either. Lily was getting anxious.
"Mrs. Murray, please step out for a moment," Lily said, her patience wearing thin.
Rhett mumbled for Avery to leave, too.
But Avery played dumb. "You see, my husband doesn't agree. He can't be without me."
Rhett was so angry he almost passed out again.
"Avery, we have something very important to discuss that we can't say in front of you," Lily stepped forward, her tone firm. "Please step out for a moment. We'll be quick."
Lily was very anxious. The bidding was about to start, and the Cunningham family was calm and problem-free. She had tried to sabotage them from within the Cunningham Group, but Hestia had preemptively resolved everything. Lily was more anxious than anyone, but with Rhett in this state, she wondered if their plan could still proceed.
Seeing Lily's firm stance, Avery's attitude hardened as well. "I'm sorry, but I can't leave my husband alone."
Avery refused to leave.
Lily was about to explode with anger.
"Do you care so much about your husband because you're genuinely worried about him, or are you afraid he'll reveal the truth about his injuries?" Vincent appeared at the door, leaning against the frame, clearly siding with Lily.
Lily, feeling relieved to have someone speak up for her, smiled at Vincent.
Avery stood up, looking coldly at Vincent. "He knows best how he got hurt. I have a clear conscience."
"If Ms. Hawthorne has a clear conscience, why not let Ms. Taylor have a private chat?" Vincent walked over to stand behind Lily, clearly protecting her.
Lily raised an eyebrow. It was the first time a man had stood up for her, and even though it was a small matter, she felt a bit comforted.
Avery narrowed her eyes, then looked back at Rhett, speaking deliberately. "It seems Mr. Hamilton and Ms. Taylor have quite an unusual relationship. They seem very close..."
Avery's seemingly casual remark immediately made Rhett suspicious of their relationship. Rhett, being a paranoid scumbag, was naturally prone to suspicion.
He was the one who had introduced Lily and Vincent, but now it seemed their relationship was closer than his with either of them, which made him overthink.
But he couldn't speak now, nor could he voice his doubts, so he could only watch them with hidden resentment.
Vincent, on the other hand, didn't shy away and deliberately helped Lily fix her hair, appearing very intimate.
Lily, distracted by Vincent's gentlemanly gestures, didn't realize Avery was trying to sow discord.
"Since Mr. Hamilton is vouching for you, I'll wait outside," Avery said, walking over to Vincent and giving him a meaningful look.
Betty and Ethan were right; Vincent was a wild card, impossible to read.
Leaving the room, Avery headed to the smoking area, intending to light a cigarette, but remembering she was pregnant, she threw it away.
Taking a deep breath, Avery looked down at her belly.
She had never thought she would become a mother. She had assumed she would never have children.
She thought she would reject the child, but to her surprise, she eagerly anticipated its arrival and hoped it would be healthy.
After all, this was Edgar's child. It should resemble Edgar, right?
Thinking of Edgar, Avery felt a bit helpless. She had never imagined she would fall in love, especially with someone as childish as Edgar.
Smiling wryly, Avery was about to leave the smoking area when someone grabbed her, pulling her into a corner.
Avery frowned, ready to fight back, but her hands were pinned, and she was kissed.
Edgar grinned, having figured out his wife's moves—first an elbow strike, then a knee jab. Luckily, he reacted quickly.
Recognizing his familiar scent, Avery, both helpless and angry, stomped on his foot.
Edgar, enduring the pain, held her close. "Honey, you're so rough on me."
"Am I?" Avery raised an eyebrow.
Edgar was in an exceptionally good mood. Ever since he saw how Avery dealt with Rhett, he had been utterly satisfied.
Avery had always been tough on him, but she had never gone all out. She rarely even laid a hand on him.
But with Rhett, Avery had shown no mercy.
"Honey, I missed you so much..." Edgar, in high spirits, began to act spoiled.
"Sorry, my husband is lying in the hospital room," Avery said coldly.
Avery's words were always infuriating, but this time Edgar was in such a good mood that he didn't mind. "How's our baby? Is it giving you any trouble?"
Avery felt a bit nauseous. "You're worrying too much. I'm just past the first trimester."
"No morning sickness, right? Richard told me that when Jasmine was pregnant with Joe and Justin, she had terrible morning sickness." Edgar was very concerned about Jasmine.
"Me?" Avery realized she had no symptoms, not even morning sickness. "Am I too tough? Is there something wrong with the baby? Why don't I have any symptoms?"
Avery grew anxious, wanting to get checked.
Seeing Avery's nervousness, Edgar's mood improved even more. He held her tightly. "We've kept up with all the prenatal checkups. Everything's fine. Don't worry. Betty said not everyone gets morning sickness. It varies from person to person. She was climbing walls until the baby was born."
Avery's mouth twitched. That seemed true.
Back in the hospital room, Vincent was overly attentive to Lily, and Lily enjoyed his attention, ignoring Rhett's suspicious gaze.
"We need to hurry with this project. The bidding is about to start, and the Cunningham family is still fine," Lily complained.
Rhett snorted. Though he couldn't speak, he was already suspicious of Lily and Vincent.
Were they planning to form an alliance without him?
