Chapter 978 Selene is Lily's Nemesis

The stalker lunged for his phone in panic, but Maeve was too quick. He never stood a chance against her lightning reflexes.

Maeve narrowed her eyes at the chat displayed on the screen. "So they're targeting Selene?"

Beside her, Liam trembled slightly. This Maeve was fearless to the point of recklessness. The man clearly looked like a professional.

As if on cue, the stranger's face darkened as he lunged at Maeve, desperate to retrieve his phone. With supreme confidence born of skill, Maeve didn't even flinch. She executed a perfect side kick that sent him sprawling to the ground.

"Young people today," Maeve rolled her eyes. "They fall asleep at the drop of a hat."

Liam stood shaking, biting his fingernails. He retracted his assessment of the man being a professional—the guy had gone down embarrassingly fast.

Suddenly emboldened, Liam puffed up his chest. "How dare you take secret photos in public!"

Then he rushed over and plopped down on the guy.

Meanwhile, Vincent and Selene continued their shopping spree, blissfully unaware.

Selene's luck held—she had no idea that someone who'd been tracking her with kidnapping intentions had just been neutralized.

Vincent's phone rang. "Mr. Hamilton, there's a minor situation at the company that requires your attention," came the voice on the other end.

It was clearly an attempt to separate them. But with the stalker neutralized, the plan had already fallen apart.

Vincent frowned slightly, turning to Selene. "You're coming with me to the office."

He wouldn't let her out of his sight. Only within his field of vision could he ensure her safety.

Selene was still riding the high of their shopping spree, excitedly examining the clothes and cosmetics in her bags. "This makeup set... I've only ever seen it on Instagram before."

Vincent smiled indulgently. She was so transparent in her delight over material things.

"Selene, you're coming with me to the office," he repeated.

"I'll go anywhere," Selene nodded gratefully.

Vincent's mood lifted. He ruffled her hair affectionately. She was so agreeable when spoiled with gifts. Without financial incentives, she could be as difficult to handle as a stray cat.

If he ever went bankrupt or ran out of money, he was certain Selene would leave without a backward glance. For the sake of marital harmony, he'd better keep making money. Retirement would have to wait.

At Lily's residence, fury erupted.

"What did you say?" Lily smashed her coffee cup against the wall. "He took Selene to the company with him?"

Vincent was keeping Selene close, making it impossible for Lily's people to get to her.

"Vincent," Lily laughed bitterly. "You really think you can protect her forever? Good luck keeping her in your pocket every minute of every day!"

She gritted her teeth. "Keep watching Selene. She can't possibly stay cooped up forever. Everyone leaves home eventually."

"Yes, ma'am."

Lily couldn't believe Selene would never leave the gated community on her own. There had to be moments when she'd go out walking or meet friends.

But after a week of surveillance, Lily's watchers were shocked. Selene was genuinely homebodied! Not only did she never leave the community, she barely left the villa itself.

She seemed perfectly content within those walls.

Lily couldn't understand Selene's contentment.

A hardworking woman finally living a life without work—Selene was too busy enjoying herself to think about going out. Besides, she was genuinely afraid after Maeve's warning about being watched.

Vincent didn't even need to caution her against wandering off anymore. She was more cautious than anyone.

Her days consisted of eating, sleeping, watching movies, and snacking—a continuous cycle of indulgence.

Each evening when Vincent returned from work, he'd find her sprawled on the couch in a carefree pose, wearing a little camisole, hair in messy buns, watching comedy films with her stuffed bear.

Leaning against the doorframe, Vincent observed her—makeup-free but radiating youth and sunshine. The corners of his mouth turned up in a smile.

Previously, he couldn't find meaning in making money; it had just been numbers to him. Now, he had a purpose: providing for Selene.

Selene laughed unreservedly at the movie.

Her laughter was contagious. Watching her joy improved his mood immeasurably.

Sometimes a person appeared in your life unexpectedly and illuminated your entire world.

"What movie has you laughing so hard?" Vincent asked.

Selene glanced at him, now comfortable in his presence after their time together. "You wouldn't understand even if I told you."

Vincent smiled and walked over. "Did you make dinner?"

Selene nodded quickly, jumping up and rushing to the dining table. "Look, organic vegetables!"

Vincent had eaten organic vegetables for a week straight. Though not unpleasant, it was becoming monotonous. "Honey, could we try something different tomorrow?"

"The neighbors gave us these. It would be wasteful not to—" Selene stopped mid-sentence, turning to Vincent with wide, suspicious eyes. "What did you just call me?"

Her ears had turned bright red.

"We're legally married. Isn't 'honey' appropriate?" Vincent raised an eyebrow, his smile devastatingly charming.

Once again, Selene was captivated by his good looks.

"I suppose that's true," she nodded, easily swayed.

"Then let me hear you call me 'darling,'" Vincent moved closer, backing Selene into a corner.

In her oversized T-shirt with one shoulder exposed, she looked endearingly vulnerable.

"I can't... I can't say it," Selene whispered, her face flushed.

"One million dollars," Vincent leaned against the wall, bending down to her ear and placing a kiss there. "One million dollars as a pet name fee."

Selene's cowlick practically stood on end. "Darling!"

Vincent smiled with satisfaction, lifting her by the hips. "Come on, honey. Time to do what married couples do."

"No... we should eat dinner first," Selene stammered.

Vincent nuzzled against her neck. "No... I'd rather have you for dinner."

She smelled like milk—she must have been drinking it and spilled some on herself.

Back at Lily's residence, she was nearly at her breaking point.

"She hasn't left the community once in all this time?" Lily demanded.

"She barely even leaves the living room," her frustrated surveillance team reported. "Ms. Taylor, what should we do?"

Lily massaged her temples, her face dark with anger. "I have a plan now."
