Chapter 583: Has Richard Really Lost His Memory?
Sophia scoffed. "No way, the first face Richard sees when he wakes up can't be hers; it’s gotta be you!"
She shot a look at her bodyguards. "Stop them."
Sophia's crew stepped up, and Betty's crew was ready to throw down too. It was about to get real messy.
The bodyguards blocked Betty from getting into the room; it was clear this wasn’t gonna be a walk in the park.
Both sides were in a standoff, and Betty, who had hustled all the way from Silverlight City, was outnumbered.
Sophia, on the other hand, had everything planned out.
Betty pieced it together: Sophia had Aleah go after her and her kid, then fed Richard some BS to get him worried, and finally ambushed him on his way home without going after his life.
It was all part of their scheme, and the endgame was definitely something to do with Richard.
Betty's face turned dark as she glared at Sophia, her voice icy and full of menace. "What did you do to Richard?"
Sophia just snorted and played dumb.
Aleah looked down, feeling guilty, and kept her mouth shut too.
Now, it was just a waiting game for Richard to wake up.
Betty, losing her cool, turned to the bodyguards blocking her. "Move it!"
But these guys were mercenaries; they weren’t budging.
If Betty wasn’t pregnant, she’d throw hands, but she had to think about her baby.
"No one sees my son without my say-so," Sophia said, all high and mighty.
"I’d like to see who’s gonna stop her!" Cordelia’s icy voice echoed from the elevator as she rolled in with Arnold, Nolan, Edward, Edgar, Ethan, Jasmine, and a whole squad.
Arnold’s cold stare made the bodyguards rush out of the elevator to shield Betty while Nolan, Edward, Edgar, and Ethan stood tall behind her.
The two bodyguards exchanged a look, already feeling the heat from the squad.
They knew they were outmatched without even throwing a punch.
Betty snorted, shoved them aside, and walked straight in.
Standing by the hospital bed, Betty looked at the battered and bruised Richard, her eyes welling up with pain.
"Richard," Betty softly called his name.
But Richard, still out cold, didn’t react.
Betty reached for his hand, but he had it clenched tight, protecting something. She noticed his hand was hurt, his fingers red, probably from Aleah and the others trying to pry them open.
Betty turned her icy glare to Aleah and then to Sophia, her voice low and deadly. "This is your last warning."
She wouldn't go easy on them anymore from now on.
Aleah, scared, hid behind Sophia.
Sophia just snorted and looked away.
Betty turned back, gently holding Richard’s fingers, her voice soft. "Richard, open your hand."
No one had ever seen Betty this gentle.
Jasmine, more emotional, had tears in her eyes from the heartache.
Richard furrowed his brow, showing signs of waking up.
Aleah, nervous, wanted to rush over so Richard would see her first.
Jasmine immediately blocked her, snapping, "Have some shame."
Sophia’s bodyguard tried to push Jasmine, but Ethan kicked him and pulled Jasmine into his arms, almost sparking another brawl.
Nolan, Edgar, and Edward also stepped up, ready for anything.
"Don't you dare lay a finger on our sister!"
Jasmine's heart was pounding; having this many people backing her up felt amazing.
So, she found the guts to point at Aleah and rip into her, "You're shameless. You've disgraced all women. Birds of a feather flock together; you're all equally vile."
Aleah, desperate to get to Richard, teared up and played the pity card. "Please, let me be by Richard's side. We truly love each other."
Jasmine was disgusted. "Richard would never love you. Liking you was the biggest mistake of his life."
Aleah tried to dig up old memories. "We've been together for so many years; we know each other best. He loves me; he could never love anyone else. He always has me in his heart. We've been through so much together. He once swore to me that he would marry no one but me."
Aleah's white dress today was a throwback to her old pure and lovely look. Richard had once been head over heels for her, but that love had long since faded.
Jasmine found Aleah both disgusting and pitiful. "You're truly shameless."
Jasmine realized that Aleah had thick skin and her words weren't cutting it. Betty needed to step in and handle this.
But Betty had no time for Aleah now because Richard was waking up.
Betty, a bit nervous, stood up and looked at Richard. "Richard, how are you feeling? Is there any discomfort?"
Richard groaned, slowly opened his eyes, and frowned. His gaze was confused and unfamiliar.
Sophia's heart leaped to her throat as she rushed over. "Richard, it's Mom."
Richard frowned and raised his hand to rub his forehead.
Raising his right hand, Richard winced in pain as he looked at his tightly clenched fist, slowly opening it, his knuckles aching.
In his palm was a pendant with a photo of Betty.
Betty was stunned; Richard had been holding her photo so tightly.
It was impossible not to be moved.
Richard looked at the photo, then at Betty, his voice low. "Who are you?"
Betty's body stiffened, shocked as she looked at Richard. "You don't remember me?"
Richard shook his head, his mind blank for now, unable to recall anything.
But he vaguely felt that Betty was very important; otherwise, he wouldn't have held her photo so dearly.
Hearing that Richard had lost his memory, Sophia and Aleah excitedly stepped forward.
"Richard, it's me, your mom."
Aleah also spoke excitedly, "Richard, it's me, Aleah."
Betty's face turned pale as she suddenly understood.
Jasmine, shocked, grabbed Ethan's hand. "What did they do to Richard?"
Memory loss made Richard forget Betty and only remember Aleah and the past?
In that instant, Jasmine panicked.
Because Jasmine knew all too well how much Richard had loved Aleah in the past.
If he had now forgotten Betty, it would be so unfair to Betty.
"Richard." Aleah mustered the courage to push Betty aside, standing by Richard's side, crying as she held his hand. "Richard, do you remember me? I'm Aleah."
Betty felt weak and panicked, fearing that if Richard forgot her, he would only remember his love for Aleah.
Richard looked at Aleah, his face not looking good, and his survival instinct made him subconsciously pull his hand away. He frowned as he spoke, "Who are you?"
Everyone was stunned, including Aleah.
