Chapter 35 Daniel Gave Jasmine Away Again
The Douglas Estate.
Without cab fare, Jasmine had run from the hospital back to the Douglas Estate, and it was now 8:35 AM.
She was five minutes late.
Daniel seemed to be waiting for her on purpose in the courtyard, with a dark expression on his face.
"You're late," Daniel stated, his voice grave as he checked the time.
Jasmine headed towards the house, her gaze low. She only needed to take care of Serena; she didn't have to be subject to Daniel's moods.
"Stop right there." Daniel reached out to block Jasmine's path. "I'm asking you one last time, who is the father of your bastard?"
He was fixated on uncovering the man who'd made Jasmine betray him.
If it wasn't Jordan, then who?
Tom?
He'd checked. It wasn't Tom.
With so many people at the hotel that night, Daniel couldn't begin to guess who it could be.
In her circle, there weren't many bold enough to carry on with her in secret.
"I'd like to know that myself..." Jasmine replied, pushing Daniel's hand aside.
"What do you mean? You still refuse to tell me," Daniel said, anger lacing his tone.
Jasmine had her curses too. She didn’t hurl the ugly ones out loud, but oh, how she sometimes wanted to lash out with a biting "idiot"...
She never used to think Daniel could be so brainless.
It seemed no matter what she said, he wouldn't believe her. He was hell-bent on thinking she was protecting that man, refusing to give him up.
In her heart, Jasmine wanted to curse, but she didn’t have the guts to let the words escape her lips.
She could only bow her head in silence.
She was in no position to raise a fuss.
"After all these years, you still show no sign of remorse," Daniel said with a derisive chuckle. "I've always given you chances."
Jasmine kept silent, her head still down. Only after a long while did she look up at Daniel. "What chances are you talking about?"
"I'm waiting for you to come clean, to tell me who that man is!" Daniel's fury was evident in his tone.
Jasmine, at that moment, was like a soft punching bag—no matter how hard anyone hit her, no matter the pain inflicted, she wouldn't make a sound. It was like beating on cotton, driving one mad with frustration.
"Why are you so obsessed with knowing who he is? Are you really angry because I betrayed you, or is it just your ego, dying to know who outshone you, who drove me to infidelity?" Jasmine normally kept quiet, fearful that any word might bring disaster her way.
In prison, she had become almost mute. She could go months without speaking a word. If it hadn't been for the compulsory therapy sessions, she might have gone an entire year in complete silence.
"Does it make a difference?" Daniel looked at her with disdain. "Tell me who he is, and maybe I'll let you slide."
"Your idea of giving me chances is just interrogating me over and over. I answer, but you don't believe me. What kind of answer would ever satisfy you?" Jasmine was bewildered.
She didn't know what to do anymore.
Six years... Before incarceration, she explained herself repeatedly, crying and screaming for him to understand.
Had he ever believed her? No.
He just kept wounding her, pushing her deeper into the abyss time after time.
Daniel was infuriated by Jasmine; his disgust grew more with each second. He hated the way she looked now—no light in her eyes, timid and cowardly yet completely dismissive of him.
Once, Jasmine was full of laughter; she was proud like a swan, and her sparkling eyes were fixed only on him.
But now, when Jasmine looked at him, her eyes were indifferent, void of light and emotion.
There was nothing but fear and timidity left in her.
This only fueled Daniel's anger more.
"Jasmine, what took you so long?" Daniel was about to press Jasmine again about the man from the past when Serena walked up and hugged his arm.
Once again, Jasmine lowered her head, staying silent.
"Can you fetch a shovel from the warehouse in the backyard? I feel like doing some gardening myself," Serena told Jasmine.
Daniel clenched his fist; his Adam's apple bobbed, but he ultimately said nothing.
He just watched as Jasmine made her way to the backyard, his eyes helplessly following her until she disappeared from sight.
"She wants her son enrolled as soon as possible, right? We're doing her a favor," Serena said coolly, her eyes gleaming with malice, though her voice feigned compassion.
Daniel remained silent, feeling an inexplicable irritation gnawing at him. Withdrawing his arm abruptly, he made his way into the living room.
Serena cast a venomous glance towards the location of the warehouse. Once Jasmine married the butler’s son, she would never again have to worry about losing Daniel to Jasmine.
Daniel was acutely aware of how repulsive the butler's son was. Any woman tainted by him was off-limits to Daniel, forever.
Serena was satisfied with Daniel's resolve to hand Jasmine over to the butler's son.
With a disdainful snort, she too entered the living room.
If Jasmine showed any resistance, she would trigger the butler’s son's cruel nature. Being mentally unstable, he'd never leave Jasmine alive if he decided to lash out.
