Chapter 521 Zelda Can't Escape Anymore
"Justice delayed is justice denied."
For Ethan, losing his mom meant that even if justice came, it would be too late.
"But we can't find peace without justice," Jasmine said, holding Ethan's hand.
Ethan nodded. "You're right. If someone messes up, they should face the consequences."
At Lisa's place.
Lisa seemed different. She and Casey were in the kitchen, covered in flour.
Maybe her son's running away scared her, or she finally realized how neglectful she'd been.
"Casey, is this a bunny? No, it's a piglet," Lisa laughed at the dough Casey was shaping.
Casey laughed too, snuggling into his mom's arms. "Mom, it's a bunny. I'm making it for Justin."
"Casey really likes Justin," Lisa sighed, squatting down to talk to her son. "Casey, I'm sorry to you and Justin. I apologize to both of you."
Casey cupped his mom's face and kissed her forehead. "Mom, I forgive you."
Lisa felt warmth in her heart. "I didn't tell Uncle Daniel about your birthday. How about we go to Grandma's tomorrow and have Uncle make it up to you?"
Casey asked innocently, "Why didn't you tell Uncle? I already did."
Casey didn't get the adult conflicts; he was just happy about his birthday and had called Uncle Daniel.
Lisa was stunned. The kid had actually called Daniel.
If Daniel came, it would be awkward for Jasmine.
Sighing, Lisa thought about calling Daniel to tell him not to come, but the doorbell rang.
Lisa opened the door, and there was Daniel, arriving early.
"Casey, happy birthday," Daniel said, opening his arms. His assistant brought in two big boxes of toys and gifts.
"Wow, thanks, Uncle. Love you, Uncle," Casey said, running to hug Daniel.
Daniel picked up Casey and wiped his face. "What were you doing with your mom? You're covered in flour."
"Daniel," Lisa said awkwardly. "Maybe you shouldn't stay for dinner. Just drop off the gifts and go. I'll take Casey to see you tomorrow. I have other guests coming soon."
Lisa was trying to get Daniel to leave.
Daniel frowned. "What guests? Why can't I stay?"
Just as Lisa was about to explain, the doorbell rang again.
Lisa felt deflated.
Casey ran to the door excitedly and saw Joe and Justin dressed as Santa Claus, holding gifts.
"Casey, ready for your gifts?" Justin said happily.
Casey jumped up and clapped. "Yes! I'm ready."
Justin handed his card to Casey, and Joe did the same.
Casey opened Joe's card and was startled.
"Happy Birthday." Jasmine and Ethan also came in, each giving Casey a gift.
The atmosphere got awkward.
Daniel sat on the couch, feeling uncomfortable.
He stood up, looking at Jasmine. "Jasmine."
Ethan frowned. "We were invited, so why is he here?"
Lisa looked apologetic. "Sorry, Ethan."
"Why are you apologizing to him? I'm Casey's uncle. I have every right to be here for his birthday," Daniel said defiantly. He felt oppressed by Ethan his whole life. Now, he had to hide even for Casey's birthday.
Ethan and Daniel ignored each other. Daniel only wanted to talk to Jasmine, but she wasn't interested.
"Jasmine," Daniel called out.
"What a coincidence," Jasmine said awkwardly, keeping her distance to avoid upsetting Ethan.
"Jasmine, can we talk?" Daniel tried to seize the moment.
"We have nothing to talk about. I heard Annabelle was discharged," Jasmine said with a fake smile.
Even though she was using Daniel now, he had hurt her before, so she felt no guilt.
Annabelle was discharged, and they weren't even divorced yet.
"Jasmine," Daniel said nervously while Ethan wasn't paying attention. "Can you wait for me a little longer?"
"I can't wait for you anymore, Daniel. From eighteen until now, you've always made me wait."
Jasmine shook her head, feeling her past self was ridiculous.
"Wait, Jasmine, until we graduate."
"Wait, Jasmine, until we get engaged."
"Wait, Jasmine, until you get out of prison."
"Wait, Jasmine, until you redeem yourself."
Daniel's face darkened, and he slumped on the couch. "Jasmine, Annabelle might have something on my dad. He won't agree to our divorce."
"What does Annabelle have? Let her show us. If she can't, she's lying, and only you and your dad believe it. It's pathetic," Jasmine said calmly.
Daniel was stunned.
Annabelle probably didn't have anything on Howard.
What if Annabelle had no leverage and was just threatening Howard to protect herself?
Checking the time, Daniel suddenly stood up. "Sis, take care of Casey. I have something to deal with. I have to go!"
He needed to go home and ask Annabelle where the leverage was!
If she didn't have it, she was doing it on purpose.
Jasmine's words had reminded him.
If Annabelle had evidence and was holding it, he could also get it to use against Howard in the future.
"Goodbye, Uncle." Casey waved at Daniel.
Only Casey liked Daniel in the whole house.
After Daniel left, Jasmine breathed a sigh of relief. He was home to handle Annabelle now.
Jasmine's phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
"Jasmine, this is Zelda." On the other end was Zelda, sounding scared and trembling. "Annabelle has gone crazy. She wants me dead. She's hired someone to kill me."
"Don't panic. Tell me your address, and I'll send someone over." Jasmine reassured Zelda.
"I found it. I found the evidence!" Zelda's voice was hoarse. "Jasmine, I put the evidence in a safe place. I can't give it to you myself. Annabelle won't let me go. It's too late."
Jasmine froze.
Was Zelda really out of options?
"Jasmine, I'm sorry, really sorry. Do you remember our high school lecture hall? I once put a blade in your ballet shoes out of jealousy."
Zelda seemed afraid to say where the evidence was, only hinting to Jasmine.
After speaking, she hurriedly hung up.
Jasmine stood there, recalling those not-so-pleasant memories.
Locker 12 was where she kept her ballet shoes.
That day, Zelda had pried open her locker and put a blade in her ballet shoes.
