Chapter 464 Connor's Warning to Jasmine
At the café.
Jasmine sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, her face looking rather pale.
"Deborah's back," Connor said, sliding his phone over to Jasmine. It showed a photo of Ethan and Deborah at the airport. "Ethan didn't tell you he was picking her up, did he?"
Jasmine's fingers tightened as she looked at the photo.
In the photo, Ethan's face was very serious and he was far away from Deborah.
Jasmine said nothing about the photo.
Ethan hadn't mentioned he was picking up Deborah.
"He went personally, which means he still has feelings for Deborah," Connor preemptively stated.
Jasmine remained silent, her hands clenched.
"Can you accept your husband having another woman in his heart?" Connor asked.
"He won't," Jasmine retorted.
"You're so stubborn." Connor looked at Jasmine, feeling a pang of sympathy.
Clearly, she was anxious and nervous, yet she forced herself not to show it and tortured herself.
But he was a psychologist; he could see through it.
Jasmine's fingers were turning white from gripping so hard.
"Think it over carefully," Connor said as he stood up to pay the bill and then turned to leave.
He was predicting Deborah's moves in advance, warning Jasmine before she might be hurt.
He had someone take the photos at the airport. If he guessed correctly, soon, there would be reports online about Ethan's fiancée returning to the country and their good news being imminent.
As expected, Jasmine would not be able to accept it.
Connor told Jasmine in advance to get her mentally prepared.
Outside the café.
Just as Connor left, Ethan's car arrived.
Jasmine didn't allow him to come to the school to avoid drawing too much attention, so he could only wait here, secretly meeting Jasmine.
As soon as he parked, Ethan saw Connor and frowned. He got out of the car and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Connor was also taken aback upon meeting him and sneered. "Weren't you at the airport picking up Deborah? After so many years, don't you need to catch up with her?"
Ethan looked at Connor warily. "You knew Marissa was Deborah all along?"
"It's easy to find out. Ethan, you're too arrogant and too careless. It could have been avoided; it's your fault." Connor walked up to him. "If you hurt Jasmine, I will take her away immediately."
Ethan frowned, wanting to retort.
Connor showed Ethan the trending news with his phone.
Sure enough, the news of Ethan picking up his fiancée, who was also his ex-girlfriend, at the airport was trending.
"You seem to have forgotten that when you secured your position in the Douglas Group, you once fought a public opinion battle with Deborah." This meant that everyone knew Deborah was the only girlfriend he had ever publicly acknowledged.
In that public opinion battle, both Ethan and Deborah were beneficiaries.
Deborah used public opinion to pressure the Hawthorne family and Mr. Hawthorne.
She got what she wanted from the Hawthorne family.
"I didn't investigate it thoroughly in advance," Ethan admitted with a frown.
"Deborah's smart. She was born to be a hunter, good at gauging her target's mind. She knows how to disguise and perfect herself, making herself more competitive," Connor explained.
Connor knew that Deborah and Jasmine were not the same type of smart. Jasmine, due to her personality, was too conservative.
Whereas Deborah was adept at both offense and defense.
"I got it." Ethan glanced at the time. "You still haven't said why you're here."
Connor raised an eyebrow. "I'm here to see someone I want to see."
It was then that Ethan realized Jasmine was in the café.
"Connor!" Ethan gritted his teeth, wanting to curse him, but Connor had already gotten into his car and left.
Ethan hurriedly ran into the café.
Connor must have said something bad about him to Jasmine.
Sure enough, as soon as Ethan entered the café, he saw Jasmine sitting there with her reddened eyes.
Clearly, she had seen those misleading reports from the entertainment media.
"Jasmine!" Ethan was a bit flustered, cautiously looking at her.
Jasmine glanced at Ethan, somewhat surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Ethan grabbed her hand. "Let me explain. I didn't know the new director, Marissa, was Deborah. I hadn't thoroughly checked her background before."
"I'm fine." Jasmine shook her head and smiled.
Deborah definitely called the media reporters. They must have tried to capture angles that made Ethan and Deborah look intimate.
But in the photos, the two were far apart, not even close enough for a candid shot.
Those photos were not as telling as the one Connor had shown.
It indicated that Ethan and Deborah had kept a significant distance.
"I'm not sure of her purpose for returning. She applied through official channels for the position of project director, so I kept her. If she does anything inappropriate, I'll dismiss her immediately," Ethan assured Jasmine.
Jasmine shook her head. "The company is currently short of partners. It's good if someone is willing to help us. Keep her."
Jasmine could guess that Deborah was targeting Ethan.
So, let her stay in the company.
Such a person was much better kept close than becoming an enemy.
However, they still needed to be cautious.
"I've heard Deborah is very smart. I wonder what she's planning." Jasmine was also curious about Deborah's capabilities.
"I'll keep everything under control." Ethan nodded.
Jasmine was silent for a long time, looking at Ethan. "Let's get our marriage certificate."
Ethan was a bit surprised. Deborah's return wasn't entirely bad; Jasmine finally remembered they hadn't gotten the marriage certificate.
"Let's go right now," Ethan said, pulling Jasmine to leave.
Jasmine was helpless. "It's already almost ten o'clock at night."
Ethan then realized the time.
Jasmine smiled, just about to say she needed to return to the dormitory, but Ethan interrupted her.
"Did Connor say bad things about me?" Ethan asked warily.
Jasmine shook her head. "He said I should give you to Deborah."
Ethan was a bit displeased. "Don't listen to his nonsense."
Jasmine shook her head, her eyes firm. "As long as you still want to be with me, I won't give you to anyone."
Ethan looked at Jasmine and then pulled her away.
"Where are we going?" Jasmine was a bit confused by his sudden move.
Ethan pushed her into the passenger seat, buckled her seatbelt, and then said calmly. "Go home."
"No, I need to go back to the dormitory," Jasmine disagreed.
"Alright, I'll drop you off downstairs." Ethan nodded obediently.
Jasmine was a bit suspicious; he was so compliant today.
But he locked the car doors and drove off, not heading towards the school.
When they reached a traffic light, Ethan smiled and said, "I took the wrong road. It's too late now; you can't go back. We're going home."
Jasmine was completely amused by him and laughed out loud. "You're so childish."
Ethan held Jasmine's fingers with one hand. "I only show this side to you."
Jasmine felt a warm sensation in her heart and lowered her head, chuckling softly. "You're making it harder for me to leave you."
Love was both a lifesaving medicine and a poison.
It all depended on whether the person encountering love was fortunate enough.
