Chapter 1031 Carter is in Trouble
Austin's breath caught, and he grabbed his hand, "Dad, what are you doing?"
Carter angrily shook off his hand.
"I've said enough. Since you won't listen, I'll have to tell Charles about Hannah myself! Let him find her! You might be able to live with this, but I can't. I can't pretend not to know about Hannah's whereabouts. I've lived my whole life with integrity and I won't let my reputation be ruined now."
With that, he turned to leave again.
Austin caught up and spread his arms to block Carter's path.
"Dad, I'm your son. Are you really going to do this to me?"
Carter softened his tone, patted his shoulder, and tried to persuade him again.
"I'm doing this for your own good. I don't want you to keep making mistakes! Listen to me, hand Hannah over to me, and let me take her back! I can pretend nothing ever happened. I'll say I ran into Hannah by chance while on a business trip in Country H and brought her back. They won't doubt my words. Things can still be fixed."
Austin's eyes welled up.
"But have you ever thought about whether I can bear losing Hannah? Have you thought about my feelings?"
Carter said sternly, "Even if you love Hannah, you can't use such despicable means to keep her by your side! You should compete with Charles openly, not like this, hiding Hannah where no one can find her. What you're doing is wrong!"
Austin was completely disappointed.
His guilt towards Carter finally disappeared.
He stared blankly at Carter without saying a word.
Carter thought he had gotten through to him and smiled, "Trust me, let me take Hannah back! I promise I'll find you someone amazing."
Austin, with a flat tone, said, "No, I just want Hannah."
Carter's face changed instantly.
"If that's the case, don't blame me! I believe one day you'll thank me for this!"
With that, he pushed past Austin and walked down the steps of the bridge.
Austin watched Carter step down the stairs, his eyes turning bloodshot, his mind buzzing, unable to think clearly.
Only one thought echoed in his mind.
He wanted to take Hannah away.
Dad only cared about Charles, not his feelings at all.
How could he go on living without Hannah?
If Charles took Hannah away this time, it wouldn't be easy for Austin to get her back again.
The same plan couldn't be used twice.
He couldn't let Carter take Hannah away. No way.
Suddenly, Austin's eyes turned fierce. He ran up behind Carter and forcefully pushed him down the steps.
This was a newly built bridge, featuring a set of over thirty steps beside a gentle slope. Cars could drive up directly, while pedestrians could use the stairs for exercise.
Carter, a stickler for traffic rules, chose the pedestrian steps.
At the moment Austin reached out, Carter had no time to react. He lost his balance and tumbled down the stairs uncontrollably.
Austin, as if possessed, watched Carter roll down the steps with a blank expression.
It wasn't until Carter came to a bloody stop that Austin snapped back to reality. He looked at his hands in disbelief, his mind going blank.
What had he done?
He had pushed his father down the stairs.
No!
It wasn't him.
How could he push his father?
All these years, he had imprisoned Karen to prevent her from harming Carter and Lassie.
But he never thought that the Carter he tried so hard to protect would almost die at his hands.
No!
This wasn't his intention.
He didn't mean to.
Staring blankly at his hands for a while, Austin frantically ran to Carter's side, lifting him from the pool of blood.
"Dad, what's wrong? Dad, don't scare me. I didn't mean to. I don't know what happened. I lost control. I'm sorry, Dad. I'm sorry. I'll take you to the hospital."
Austin looked around.
There was no one around, and no cars passing by.
He couldn't get Carter to the hospital.
With trembling, blood-stained hands, he took out his phone and dialed 911.
While waiting for the ambulance, he kept checking Carter's breath, afraid he might die.
"Dad, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please don't blame me. I didn't mean it."
"Dad, I'm a terrible person. You've always been so good to me. How could I hurt you? I'm sorry."
Austin held Carter's head in his hands.
Suddenly, he felt warmth and wetness on his palm.
He opened his palm and saw it was covered in blood.
He quickly turned Carter over and found that the back of Carter's head was bleeding profusely, soaking their clothes in no time.
Austin panicked.
Tears streamed down his face.
Desperately, he tried to cover Carter's wound with his hand, hoping to stop the bleeding.
"Dad, don't be afraid. I won't let anything happen to you. Dad, don't be scared. The ambulance is coming. I'll get you to the hospital. We'll be fine, Dad."
At that moment, Austin wished he could kill himself.
How could he hurt his dad?
How could he?
Through the thin fabric, he could feel Carter's body temperature dropping, and his breathing becoming weaker.
He was at a loss, not knowing what to do.
"Dad, please don't die. I'm begging you, don't die. I'm sorry. It's all my fault. Please wake up."
Amid his sorrowful cries, the ambulance finally arrived.
As they were taken to the hospital, Austin sat beside Carter, holding his hand tightly while the doctors worked to save him.
"How did the patient get injured?" the doctor asked while the nurse took notes.
Austin trembled as he answered, "He fell down the stairs... hit his head... lost a lot of blood... a lot of blood."
His mind was filled with images of blood.
All of it was his father's blood.
The nurse continued taking notes while asking more questions, "Does the patient have any allergies? What's his name? How old is he?"
Austin answered everything.
The ambulance rushed to the hospital, and several orderlies lifted Carter from the ambulance and took him to the emergency room.
The stretcher was stained with blood.
Carter's face was as pale as a ghost.
