Chapter 618 Patricia Takes Action and Turns the Tide
Patricia arrived at the villa area on time. When she reached building 15, she happened to meet Maximilian coming out from inside.
The two exchanged smiles.
Maximilian said, "Since we've run into each other, let's go together!"
Patricia smiled and nodded.
Maximilian glanced at his watch. It was nine o'clock, the time when his uncle usually finished breakfast and went to bother others.
Although he had repeatedly told his uncle not to bother others anymore.
But his uncle never listened.
After walking for a while, Patricia realized that they were not on the same path she had taken yesterday. Pointing to the left, she said, "Isn't building 28 over there?"
Maximilian mysteriously said, "I'm taking you somewhere else first."
Patricia looked puzzled but didn't ask further.
After taking a few turns, Patricia saw a pavilion.
Before they could reach it, they could already hear people arguing from inside.
"Shut up! Say another word, and I'll punch you!"
"Come at me then! I'm not afraid of you..."
Patricia fell silent.
Maximilian fell silent.
When they reached the balcony, they saw a group of older men arguing passionately.
Meanwhile, the instigator of their anger, Kaleb, acted as if he had nothing to do with it.
The more indifferent he appeared, the angrier the older men became.
"Didn't I tell you not to come anymore? We've moved several times. How do you always manage to find us?"
Kaleb disdainfully replied, "You're so dumb, it's laughable! This place isn't that big. It's easy to find you guys."
A hush fell over the group.
Kaleb interjected with a twinkle in his eye. "Enough chatter, let's get on with the game. Chess awaits!"
The man who had been bickering with Kaleb slammed the chess pieces down in exasperation, "I've had it, I'm done playing... You're insufferable..."
Patricia observed the scene closely, taking in every detail.
Could it be that the older man who is arguing with Kaleb now is the one who was chasing after him yesterday?
And now he is getting furious because of Kaleb.
These two people!
They are really a pair of bickering enemies.
The argument was intense, and the elder spectating beside them was thoroughly engrossed, oblivious to the arrival of Maximilian and Patricia.
It was only when Maximilian's voice cut through the commotion with a call of "Uncle!" that the dispute ceased, and all eyes turned to the newcomers.
Kaleb, seemingly unfazed by the sight of Maximilian and Patricia together, hurried over and latched onto Maximilian's arm. "Perfect timing," he declared. "Otis Patterson here is trying to pick a fight with me. How about you take care of him for me?"
Otis was the very man whose patience Kaleb had worn thin.
Otis's complexion shifted to a shade of irate green upon hearing Kaleb's words. He took Maximilian aside, his frustration needing an outlet. "Mr. Reed, now that you're here, please have a word with your uncle. His antics leave us without a moment's peace!"
Meanwhile, Kaleb took refuge behind Maximilian, peeking out with feigned innocence. "I haven't been causing any trouble at all."
The claim nearly sent Otis into apoplexy.
Maximilian stepped in swiftly, offering a conciliatory gesture. "My sincerest apologies. I extend my regret for any disturbances on behalf of my uncle, to everyone present."
Otis angrily said, "Apologies won't make things better. You have to talk to him seriously and make him stop causing trouble! He's been making my heart ache every day."
Maximilian nodded vigorously. "Alright, I promise I'll talk to him seriously."
Kaleb pouted discontentedly. "Hey, whose nephew are you anyway? How come you're helping him instead of me?"
Maximilian stared at him. "Enough, Uncle. No more talking."
Kaleb obviously didn't accept this and pointed at the chessboard. "Look, it was a good game of chess, but he messed it up like this! I'm definitely going to lose! And I can't even say anything!"
"You..." Kaleb's words made Maximilian's temples throb with pain.
Patricia glanced at the chessboard and smiled mischievously. "Actually, this game of chess is destined to be lost, but I have a way to turn it around."
Among this group of older men, the oldest one was probably around seventy years old and looked gentle and kind.
Hearing Patricia's words, Kaleb became interested and chuckled. "You sure talk big, girl! Do you have a way to turn the tables?"
Kaleb gently pulled at Patricia's sleeve, a hint of concern in his voice. "Miss, Arnold Sanders is a formidable chess player. It's no small feat to challenge him!"
Otis, skeptical, eyed Patricia. "You seem quite young, barely in your twenties. Are you even acquainted with the game of chess?"
With a modest tilt of her head, Patricia responded, "I have some familiarity."
Arnold chuckled dismissively. "You think to face me with such scant experience? Prepare for a humbling defeat!"
Patricia's smile held a flicker of defiance as she retorted, "To lose is not a disgrace. It would be an honor to engage in a match with an esteemed player such as yourself."
She had made Arnold very happy.
"Alright, I'll play a game with you then. Since you can talk, I'll go easy on you.
"Deal!" Patricia laughed along and took Otis's seat.
Otis patted Kaleb's shoulder.
Kaleb, annoyed, asked, "What?"
Otis pointed at Patricia and said, "Your niece-in-law?"
Kaleb raised his chin proudly and said, "So what? Are you jealous?"
Just as Maximilian was about to explain, Kaleb secretly pinched him.
Otis pouted and said, "What am I jealous of? Let's talk after I win."
Kaleb grabbed Patricia's hand and whispered, "Patricia, you can't lose. You have to win... or it'll be really embarrassing."
Patricia smiled at him but didn't give a direct response. She gestured to Arnold, inviting him to start.
"Please!"
Arnold made the same gesture.
Whether it was due to Otis's poor skills or Kaleb's interference, the situation on the chessboard was disastrous.
It was a complete deadlock.
Otis's chess pieces had been eaten up, and the chances of turning the tables were slim.
However, there was still a possibility of a comeback.
Fortunately, Charles had enjoyed playing various chess games since childhood and had good skills. Through years of playing against each other, she had honed her techniques under Charles's training.
Patricia remained calm and shut out all the surrounding sounds, completely focusing on the chessboard in front of her.
